THE WJSKKLY RECORDER-. NOY. 1, MORAL. AND RELIGIOUS. Tbe Beautiful Land. i- There's a Beautiful Land by Ihe spoiler untro J, Unpolluted by sorrow or care; It Is lighted alone bv the presonoe of God, Whose throne and whoso temple aro there; •Ita crystalline streams, with a murmnroas flow' Meander through valleys of green, •Audits mountains ,of jasper are bright in the glow Of a splendor no nortal bath seen. And throngs of glad singers, with jubilant broath, 6 Make the air with their melodies rifo; And OiiQ) known on earth as the Angel of 'Shines here as the Angel of Life 1 And infinite tondernesB Scams from his eyes, on bis brow is an infinite calm. And bis voice, as it thrills through the depth of the skies, Is as sweet as the Seraphim's j>slain. Through the amaranth groves of a Beautiful Land Walk the soula who were faithful in this, And their foreheads, star-crowned, by tho ze phyrs are fanned That ovormoro murmur of bliss; Tbay tasto the rich fruitage that bangs from tho trees, And breath the swc£t odor ofUSwers More fragrant -than over were kissed by tho breoze In Arsby's loveliest bowers. Old Prophets whose words wero a spirit of flame, Blazing out o'er the dnrknots of time, And Martyrs, whose courage no torture «outd * tamo, Nor turn from their purposo sublimo;;' And Saints and Confessors, a numberless throng. Who were loyal to Truth and to Bight, And left as they nalkod through tho darkness of wrong (Their foot prints encircled with light And the dear little ohildron, who went to their rcBt Era their lives had been sullied by sin, \Whilo the Angel of Morning still tarried, a guest. Their spirits' pure temple within— All aro there, all are there—in the Beautiful Land, \ The Land by the Spoiler unlrod. And their foreheads, star-crowned, by the breezes are fanned That blow from the Gardens of God. My soul hath looked ia through the gateway of dreams? On tho City all paven with gold, And board tho sweet flow of its murmurous streams, As through tho green valloys rolled ; And though it still waits on this desolate strand, A pilgrim and stranger on earth, Yet it knew, in that glimpaooftho Beautiful Laud, That li gazed on tho homo of its birth. Now I Lay me Down to Sloop.\ • \ Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to kcop; If I should dicbeforo I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.\ \Who are you, man or woman, for whom this prayer has not associations \ who, hearing its words, hears not too tho \ memory bells\ ringing up from tho goldon plains of your childhood, and fcol not the soft gales from the morning land of your life sweeping over your soul 1 You may bo a man now, in the pride audi strength of your years., you may havo carved j for yonrself an nonornblo name and deBtiny in this world; maybap you aro tho owner of broad lands and proud homes, and your heart baa grown hard in ita battle with this world. But stop a moment, and listen to this littla verse, so simple that the merest babe who leans (olisp the words, can comprehend them, and so grand in its maguificence and faith that the wisest sages shall only have fully the lessons of life when the soul utters them as it a did in \\» infancy. •* Now I lay mo.\ How softly sleep would coma and weigh down your eyelids as you re peated the words after hor. Ah I you can hear ber very tones now, stealing across your heart, though it is. so many years s'inoe death silenoed them, and you (eel the soft touch'of her hand on your pillow, and the tender lin gering of her kiss on your lips—you break down there ; proud nan as yon are, the mem ory of youwHptljec .ii more than you can bear. If she had only livedVpou would not be what yon are now; but, thanks -be t o God, she left you something holy-fend blessed beyond all meaning—something that -oannot grow old, nor dim, even in the unspeakable brightness beyond tho shining gates—the memory of a loving, praying, Christian mother. Header, it may be many years since yon re peated this prayer, or, alas! it may be that, in the din and struggle of life, yon have forgot ten to pray at all, and that; at nigbt-you bavo lain down on your pillow, never thinkiog of the sbiping ranks of angels that God's rocroy stationed around you, or thanking him for the day abcVfor tho night. But come back, we beseech you, to tho old prayer of your childhood. You oannot have outgrown that, no-matter if your hair Is frosted with the snows of life's Deoember and if your yean a)*e threef-sooro and tea Kneel down by your bedside uttering these words, see if some thing of the old peace and faith of your child hood does not come back to you— if some thing of ita dow and its blessing fall not upon your slumber. And remember that sooner or later you will \Ho down to sleep\ when this prayer will bo all tbtft your soul can make all that will avail of your rank, or wealth, or famo, whatsoever you most prize in this world, which is but the shadow \of eternity. Ah I wo shall toon pass\ tbe- \ green threshold of our common, graves ;\_| but the little prayer, the first, k-may^e, that we-took upon onr ebildishJIps, wall follow us as we sail out under tho.solemnurebjeo of tho \ River of Death,\ follow us, nkweet, faint, tender airJi-dm the shores; and wfcen'we shall cast anchor,' \the Lord our souls Jliall take \ FAYETTEV1LLE CONFECTIONERY STORE, Two doors South of tho Bonk.
