Dispatches from New York have al. ready anngunced the arrest of Victoria C. | Woodhull and Tennis C. Claflin, two no- toriously bad women, with ather partics engaged in the printing «nd nf obscens literature. . Alag, their con: the seizure of all their effects, The cause of this action on ths part of the authori- & Claflin Weekly, of a real or pretended expose involving the moral career of per- + ko not only as exemplars in morale but lo religion. The statement is mado by Mrs Woodhull, or Mrs. Biosd, as her real name is, and was given with such cilrourm. stautial detsil as to render it quite as stattling in complexion as sensationsl in character. The parties upon whom there rcurrilous attacks aro made, are the Rev. Henr; Ward Boscher and Mrs. Thoodore T:l:os. Also, upon a gentleman by ths nume of Challis. We bare previously made no mention of the contantsa of the paper, be cause we did not believe the charges theroin made, and because we did not 1:8 how the public could be berefiit- ed in the least by any refer- ence fo them in - detail, But the Tact has now by this action becomes a matter of public notoriety, and can no longer be kept from the publlo attention and investigation. Mr. Beecher is accused of conduct in- consistent with his professions as a Chris- tian , and of a minister of the goupel. The accusations aro not given in general terms, but alleged details are given, of grossly immoral practices, which are so at variance with Mr.: Beecher's reputa- tion, so at variance with the outgrowth of his remarkable life, that in spite of the specious-web of plausibility which Mre. Woodhull weares around her libeflons story, the reader cannot but conclude, on a moment's reflection, that the great di- vine, whose namo is universally kuown and respected, has been made the target of one of the barest assaults, The crimes alleged are nog condsmned, but the parties guilty of them are con» deraned for not living openiy up to what they were charged with practicing in se- ctécy. The publication of the statement is reprehonsible, even if every.point in itis true. It is without the shadow of justification ; but the indorsement of the eriminal acts, coupled with cen- sure of the parties for not committing them openly, and attempting to justify them under the specious dostring of free love, adds a darker shade to the infamy of thaact. It renders the expose infa- mously pernicious and obscane, The New York Herald, in commenting on this soundal, expresses itaelf in such forcible and partinent language, that we reproduce some portions of its editorials : ;Iu‘ last weok's numbar of the infamous publication over which these two women wretohes are also said: to play theip dis | honorable part, an anolesn-libel spiinat the Rev.
