Pamos, Sec'y. . Kew ¥erk, May 8, 1874 , - \.. . G%EELEY or crant. % . - This much st least is certain : If the - forced upon, the country is Grant or Greeley, the Democracy will vote on masse for Greeley, * 'We have not seen wfif a single Democratic expression whick perriits a doubt on this point. But is this to be the narrow choice of the American 'people? query some Demo: orats and Democratic journals, It is dif. feult, 'at present to see how it can be otherwise, The best Democratic nomi- nations that could be made at Baltimore would stand a slender chance as & third ticket, and they would not get even that ohance. Their appparance in the field would be the signal far the retirement of Grgoley,, and the re-¢onsolidation of the Republican party. Tho election of the Philadeiphis nominge would. be inevita- ble. Butanother contingency begins to be. mentioned. Suppose, it is said, the Philadelphis convention should surrender itself to the liberal Republicans, endorse the Cincinnati nomibations and thus,; by the sacrifice of Grant and his faction, save the Republican party. lo that case, we admit, an independent Democratic tisket would be in order. But is the caso « supposable one? Admitting that the stubborn will of Grant could be bent to the .szcrifice, and that his convention of placemen and pledged supporters were capable of such a change of base, is it possible that the faction of the adminis- tration conld consent to its own annihi- -lation, as it would in; nominating Greeley? If it ratified the Cincinnati nominations 'It would also have to accept the Cincin nati platform, and that is but an arraign- ment and death-sefitence of itself, To suppose this of the Philadelphia Conven- tion, is to suppose one attempting to save his life by committingsuicide, The thing is incredible. : It may be that Grant will be thrown overboard at Philadelphis, but we do not believe it. He is not of the self-sacrifi- cing kind. His devotion to the Republi- can party is neither so ardent nor of so long standing as to indoce him to be its willing victim. Ho has the power to 'mominate himself, gnd he will use it But in - the - improbable event _- of a Blaine or a Boutwell taking his place in -s was waig- m cmsc ~~~ mg V , - Mon would not be: mallee, he SHHE Greeley and liberal republicanism would still remain in the fiald, and the alterna- tire presented to the democracy would be substantially the same as it is now. As againat Grant or a Grant man, such as the Philadelphia convention could nomi- ' nate, Greeley on the Cincinnati platform, and representing every principle of gov- ' ernment and point of policy that demo- crates hold. dear, would bo a hundred times preferable, We conclude, there- fore, that no impengding events are likely to change materially the present political altuation as it affects the democracy, and that democrats will ba apt to see mare and more clearly, as time progresses, that the success of their principles and a bet- ter state of things for the country are only to be hoped for through the triumph of liberal republicanism, with Greeley as its representative. ier. |. 'The trains are compelled to run the gauntlet of flames. The western rapge of the Moosic Mountains is all ablaze this eve- ning, presenting a magnificent scene. Wasnisororx, May b.~-*\ Tribune\ Washington special says of the Alabama 'correspondengs in the Senato yesterday, that utter the reading Sumner got the floor and advocated the remnaving of the avjuocuion of secrecy from the correspon- dence and debate that may arise upon it. Be said that in Eogland, where the gov- ernment was of a monarchial form, no such thing was known as amecret discus sion of treaty and that whatevor was said in Parliament on this subject or what- ever portion of this correspondence is communicated to Parliament by the Min- istry, will be open to the whole world. If this course was proper in England, much [moe was it desirable here. 'Tre manner in which this controversy was settled concerned not only the administration and benate but the entire people, who 'bad a right know all about it as negotia- tions advanced. Again, discussion on the Johnson - Clarepdou treaty was made pub- lic. failed to recoguize, the rights of the Uni: ted States in the very particular in which it is now prepgred to yield. The proposition to conduct this busi- ness io was voted down without division, and after the order was mada to print the correspondence for confidential use of the Senate, the doors were opened. Conversation with many senators of different politics this evening proves this new basis of settlement will not meet with unanimous favor. - ougiave i#q it IB Feported, pirpmed to make a long speech lasting through one 6r two sessiobs, Strong is opposed to it and others will take ground to sdopt at this late date a rule which shall govern the arbitrators and substantially directing them to throw out any particular claims about which the controversy bas occurred is Just as bad as withdrawing those claims as Great Britain demanded that we should. As it will take a day or two to print tha correspondepcp, it is doubtful if the de- bate on thé treaty is resumed before Wednesday.: a NEW YORK CITY. INQ'I‘ALLATIO‘] OF TAMMANY NEW OPPICERO.
