M This fallow connected with the timber land, of several bundred mcres, direetly south of the plank road, and extending to Christian Holiow. Edmand Miller owos a largo dairy farm on the top ol the bill of abont 600 acres, cleared and io timber, wlth good fences and buil'd ings, scuth-wost of tha belt of a@imber reaching to Chosstian Hollow. The roots of corns, in properly p (1 verizod soil, will extond at least fire feet, and if the soil is not disintegrated to a proper depth the rools eannot déxtend to a healthful distsnce in Besrch of plant food, but will lodge, either on a hard, barren subsoil, or in water ying thereon in wot weather; which in cither case make It impossible for the érop to grow and mature in a succesifal gmanner. The modes of after culture should al- ways embrace suchqnanipalations as will givo the greatest athount of disturhkance to the soil, with the least amount of compression to the roots of jthe corn, nor should a plow be used in thp cultivation injured by the plow ; indaed, itis far bat- tor not to use s plow at ail, unless in some extreme case, where fhe condition of the soll makes it indispepsable. Barnyard manure, in a decomposed state, may be plowed in, to a moderate depth, or what is taiter, uked as a top- dreaming, and barrowed in ; but in no caso apy boned: is expected from it the first sesson.
