M k THA PROJEOT IN COMPETENT HANDS. | to Rn. the or“ end Marke® Sts. *% It is probably not generally known that an effort has beem silently bt‘tt, as the faots disclose, nuccessfully made by the Masonic Fraternity of this city and neigh- borhood, to prosure & suitable lot upon which to erect a Masotiic Hall, | At a public meeting of the Fraternity held on Monday evening last, a report was made which showed that the com- mittea in charge of the matter had se- cured pledgas of a sufficient suth to war- rant them in making the purchase of the lot owned by the Hathaway estate, locat- ed on the northwest corner of Lake and Markets streets. It was proposed by the committes to secure subscriptions to asufficient amount to purohase the lot, the title to which is to be given to the four masonic bodies. At the meeting Monday last the commit- tee reported that frora some 560 circulars issued to members of the Lodgor, Chap, ter and Commundery, 233 ansyrers bad been received, giving a total subscription of $5,000. No doubt is felt by the com- mitiée that the remaining sumof $2,000 will be secured within a short time, and with the detormination exprossed at the A € Cormer soammmen @ meeting wo have no fear of the result. For erecting the buildiog several plans have been proposed, out that at present deemed the most feasible is to use mon- ies now in tho hands of the several bodies, amounting to about $10,000, in putting in the foundation for, the baild- ing, which, added to the cost of lot (paid for by voluntary contributions) $7,000, it is considered will enable the Trustees of the bodtes (all of whom are incorporated by act of to issue bonds for a sufficient amount to erect.the building, tut to render the eecurity to capitalists still greater, I\ is proposed to placo upon the property a First Mortgage of $25,000, and lssus bondn for the ammount. A Sere ond Mortgage then to be made for suffi- cient to completo th& building, probably $20,100 more, the Second Mortgage bonds tu be used in re-imbursing the Masonic bodies for monies borrowed éf them, and the balance to bo disposed of to members of the Fraternity and expended in erect- ing the building. The Second Mortgage bonds to be all disposed of and the pro- ceeds placed in the building before the First Mortgago bonds are thrown on the market, when no doubt is entertained of their being taken at once. Estimates m.de by several prominent property holders as to prospectire rental, leads us to believe, that without any rants from the Mansonio bodies, sufficient will be realized to pay interest, insurance afd taxes, and it is well known that the Masonic budiea, with reasobablo economy, can absorb $2,000 per year of the bonds as they fall dug, and within twonty years at the latest, hold the entire indebted- ness. The project has been looked upon by many as chimerical, but the fact that at this writing over $5,200 has been pledged and many prominent members of the fra- ternity not yet been seen, np doubt is felt by the Masons that within a fow months the naasonic bodies of this city will possess the fee of the lot, and one of our most prudénat capitalists has said that be would take all the bonds that they might desire him to, and would not be afraid to guaranteaithe entire issue as, with the masonic fraternity behind them, they must be good. Numerous projects for paging the dabt have been broached, and a tax of ono dollar per 1.”st1 added to tho yearly say- inga of the bodies, would oxtinguifh the whole in fifteen years. The persons baving the matter in charge believe that within the year 1874 a building costing $50,000 will be stand- lzlg on the corner of Lake. and Market streets, and be acknowledged to be the finest structure of the city.
