Mr. James Miller, of 202 Boss street, Brooklyn, E. D, has jast pablished a valu- able souvenir of the progress of this counr try in the shape of a large and beautiful picture-the \Centennial Picture of Prof gress,\ lithographed from a pen drawing by Mr. D. T. Ames, of New York. The picture is the reault of over a year's study and work, and is eminently successful in depicting the principal events of the last handied years. In the cantre are the Declasation of Inde pendence and the Eqancipation Proclama- tion, with portraita of Washingt n and Lin- coln. Sprrounding these aro amaller illus. trations representing scotes of the Revalu- tlonary and civil wars, the old Independance Hall and other subjects The grouping of the various pictures is masterly. One point needs to be borne in mind, namely, that the band haggfrom its organization, been a self-sup- porting institution, never having called upon the citizens for aid, with but a single excep- tion, that of supplying the second uniform which was done at the time St. Omer's Com» mandery went to Baltimore, and was large- ly the rssult of the efforts of the Bir Knights. With this ezception, the band havo borne their own expouseds, which arp always very heavy when drawing upon the purses of young men of moderate means. The new plan is now to furnish a band which the people may feel in a large degree to possess, by raising the amount of $1,200, $700 af which will purchase a new set of instru ments, and $500 to apply as oue year's sal- ary for Mr. La Frince, the loader. This amount for the leader's salary should be subscribed to be paid annually when called upon by the collector appointed for that pur- pose. As a compensation to the citizens for this contribution, the band are willing to give an open-air concort at least pnoe a week during the summer season, if a suitable place can be provided, perhaps in Wisner Park. A fine band stand would not only be an ornament to Wisner Park, but would far» nish accommodation for public mestings of all kinds which may be held thers. The' question is, shall this new plan succeed and restore to Elmira a mach loved and greatly missed organization ? ELMRA FEMALE COLLEGE. ----agme-- Second Lecture by Gov. Stewart L. Wood» ford. A fine audience was again drawn to the College Chapel last evening to listen to the second of ex-Gov. Woodford's {legal lectures. The subject concerned chiefly the property rights of women. Probably few, except the legal gentlemen present, had any idem of the rapid advance made in the last few years in this direction, first in England, and now still mote signally in America. Tho lectarer showed how the decision of the equity courts had influenced legislation uutil things bad come to that pass in some of our States, New York included, that the only irregularity is in woman's favor, abo having rights from which her husband in debarred. Ono of theso is the right of dower, which does not pertain to her hus. band on her dosth, no matter how wealthy she may be, nor how needy his condition, The husband cannot sell his real estato with» out her cansent, while sho may disposa.of her own without his knowledge. Tho lecturer queried whether in case woman should become posseased of the right of suffrage she would prove herself magnanimous enough to restore man to tha same rights of with herself. Our cititens: will be pleased to hear that the young ladies have the consent of Gov. Woodford, to publish these vajuable lectures, which will thus place them in possession of a wide constituemcy of readers, male and female, and greatly multiply the pleasure their delivery bas oocastoned, which gratify» ing intelligence will also exouse our brief; sketgh of thene discourses to whisikmg abe | stract can) do-Adequate justice 107 A hearty voke of thanks was passed $o the # |T \~ in this -The. £5, mafia of Mr. \Misses Rockwall and Pierce appearing three |; gives unity and prominence to each distinct | \n SJ \Tullue Cams,\ at. 1 , New York, also under the 2d minug'~&‘uk lint-GM Pouce . was but natural that the annduncement ol the presentation of the- snblime tor”:- \ tam _ te\ mar mot ouly for number, but (Si guiture and forfasmon. W- Bazry und the Rochester Opers House Compant. Ib is a fne play and follows, at least in the frt part, very closely after the hook of the santo name by Fennimore Cooper. The make up of Mr. Harry as Gen. Washington, is quite marvelons, almost as if the portraits we have of him had steppad out from their frames and woro walking about. And the mannersiand speoch preserved well the ac- counts that have come down to us of the Father of his country. J. Clinton Hall did admirably as the Spy, Harvoy Birch, making that character live again, as one might siy. Theres two, the main es in the play, wera wall supported by Dafiald, Horton, Warwick, Wabster, Miss Nellie Jones and Mrs.. Lizzie Hall. The tablenuz were admizable, egially the one representing the famous pleture of Washing- ton crossing the Delaware, and the closing rcene of the sea fight was quite a faith/ol representation and a curions mechanical effect. Bseobé's orchestras plifged the music set down for them vary accoptably, rome of the patriotip tanes beiog received with bearty applause. If the size of the aadience had borne any comparison with its enthosinai, the hall would have been crowded. Mail Depredations. A Haw the News was Received. The defendant started out in life at the low- est round of the business ladder, as a grocer's clerk, and by virtue of cheek, cunning and good ludk, and, as is rumored also, by virine of questionable practises, acquired, during the foagh times of the war, a largo fortune Forthwith he bloomed out with a pulatinl manaion, fast horses, liveried wor- vants, and other showy graniturss, sach as shoddyism does most effect.
