The Coroner was notified, and on the morning of the 6th, Dr. Cor- onér Jacobs proceeded to organize a jury, and H. Smith, J. Harper, Z. W. Dayton, B. Tiffany, J. P. Douglas, James McAuley, D. D. Hendry, John Henderson, and Walter T'. Mclaury. - The Coroner commenced taking testimony about sundown, which lasted until. Friday morn- ing. Among the witnesses sworn before the in- quest were--Mrs. Strain, Mrs. Win. Stronoghon, Mrs. Wm. MceAuloy, five daughters of the de ceased, Mrs. Robert Mitchell, Mrs. Moses Stron- oghon, John Wiltsie, David Patterson, James Gibson, and a number of others. ‘ ' Armstrong MeNaughton, the husband of de- ceased, was arrested. The body of his wife was 'dug up, and examined, but owing to the advanc- 'ed stage of decomposition, not much examination was made. From the evidence taken, (and we bave to rely on the statements of one of the jn- rymen, as the Coroner refused to tell us anything in regard to the affair, or even to tell us the ver- dict of the inquest,) it appears that deceased has 'long been afflicted with consumption, and that at various times during the past 27 years has been ill-treatéd by her husbaad, and on her death-bed From the best information we could (gather, it would seem that the jury tried him for all his offences during the past five years, and finally rendered a verdict of © Manslaughter in the first degree,\ and he was hurried of to jail. He was denied .counsel,-requested a thorough examina- tion, but it was refused to him. * The body of the deceased . was exhibited after death, and buried in the usual manner, and no evidence tended to show that the busband was the chuse of her immediate uecease, ' MeNaughton has been the cause of much trowble in that néighborhood, having had about 60 warrants served on him and been indicted 22 These are all the particulars we are able to give this week.
