T h e p r i s oner was locked u p , a n d Jn the m o r n i n g was fin e d ten dollars. H e bad no m o n e y , hut explained that the e v e n i n g p r e v i o u s , when in h u drunken ro o o d , he had given thirty-two dollars to a companion named William Lavery, to be taken care of until be •honld beeome sober, and he was confident that the person named would come 'around with the cosh. The two had boarded at the Mme boose, and worked together at tbe new park construction. M r . Lavery did not make his appearance, and Detective Mitchell began to suspect that something was not right. This suspicion wss strength ened when, upon investigation, b n found that Lavery had suddenly left the boarding house with oil hie effects, and hod not re named his usual work. Further, he •etisfactonly ascertained that the suspect nd person had been seen t) studiously ply thn man Bailin with drinks of various deacrtpUona, evidently with the settled do- inmlMtfM of g e t t l a c t o * drunk. Mr. Fillmore upon laKteg tbe chair spoke of tbe deceased aa one whom he knew weil and honored, both a s a friend a n d as a distinguished lawyer. He first became acquainted with Mr. skinner In 1*60, wheu he met him the Amembly where both were serving as m e m b e r .
