A b o u t a year ago the W ilton Academ y w as first opened. I»s m a n a g ers ioand considerable difficulty io finding a person of sufficient high culture to fulfil tbo duties o f the P r in - cipalsbip, and w h o could bring w itb him a reputation w h ich should be an assurance of tbe excellence o f tbe institution. Cobb cam e, bringing w ith him the very highest recommendations both as to intellec tual and moral c h a racter, given him by tbe most prom inent and influential men of tbe State, and bi» oiler o f services w a s accepted w ith avid ity. H e w a s a man of high attain ments, being especially w e ll versed iu Latin, G reek and H e b r e w , as w e ll as the modern languages. H e w a s tbe head of a fam ily com p rising his w ife and four children wbo resided iu tbe village o f W e b b s M ills, tow n of fiasco, about forty m iles from W il ton. W h e n the academ y opened Doctor Cobb’s fine r eputation as a classical scholar influenced M r. D o w to scud bis daughter to tbe institution that she m igh t com p lete her already w e ll advanced education in Latin and G reek. F o r a long lim e she had been an iu v a lid, and as such she w as especially placed under the charge of the doctor, who, in addition to bis other acquirem ents, is a -killed physician. F r o m that tim e until the •lay of tbe elopement she remained at tbe academ y. W ben she had been there but a few days the P r in c ipal informed ber tbat she w as far in advance o f her class in her •studies, and that if agjreeable he would thereafter bear her recite b«r lessons in her room.
