There seems to he not mnch douht th a t the “big Indians” of Tammany have determined upon the deposition o f Mr. A ugust Belmont, from his long held place at the head o f the National Democratic Executive Committee, to m ake way for the chieftain of Tam many, tho rodonbtalile W . M. Tweed. I t is now about a dozen yeaTs, we be lieve, th a t Belmont has sat undisturle •dly upon his money lugs as the pre siding officer of the national council ©f the Democracy, and his deposition will be] nothing less than a revolu tion. N o r can the revolution lie ac complished without some violeut breakage and damage to the party. I t will probably complete the rupture that has Wen going on for some time be tween Tammany and the strong clique— the up)>er-tundom of New York Demo cracy —of which the WorL! is the organ. To what ultim ate consequences th a t rupture may lead it is hard to say; hu t the Belmonts ami Barlows, with their money power and tlieir ahle m o u thpiece—the ablest altogether iu the service of the Democratic p a rty __ are not to be safely despised even by th e potent Tammany King. To lie aure it has Could, Fisk, and the Erie Hailway to furnish fresh backing ; but there is such a suspicion of rottenness about these new financial props th a t we very m u ch question whether the old can be knocked o u t without serious damage. This move against Belmont is a bold strike on the pert of Tammany for the game dictatorship in the Democratic party ai larga which it has acquired, first in the city of New York end lat terly in the State. Ite ambition grows by what it haa feed upon. Nothing short of the subjugation of the entire party, north aud south, west amHeaab to their mendatee and decrees, will satisfy ita autocratic sachems. Tweed is the conquering Napoleon at their head. If he ean eerwm the reins by a roup rF etnt, it shall go hard, then, for Pendleton, and hard for every other presuming aspirant who would dispute t h e next. Presidential nomination with fammany's protege and Tammany’s 'to o l , John T. Hoffman. F o r t h e r e lie s the ultimate meaning of the conspiracy to unseat Belmont from the chairman ship of the National Democratic Pom mitte. I t is the first step toward mas turing the s i t u a t i o n , Presidentially eon s i d e r e d , i n t h e i n t e r e s t of H o f f m a n a n d for the breaking d o w n of a l l in f l u e n c e s ;wl v e r s e t o t h e s u p r e m e d i c t a t i o n o f T a m m a n y in t h e D e m o c r a t i c p a r t y '. T H E D E M O C R A T I C W A Y . W e see tliat a resolution was intro duced in the Common < ’ouncil on Mon day, stating that the contractors who have the job of building a new House f.ir Hook and Ladder Company No. 3, are putting in common limestone where their contract specifies Medina mdstone, and directing th e Superin tendent of the Fire I >epartment to stop the fraud. There seem to be a good many illustrations of the O e m o - cratie way of doiug things furnished in connection with this job. The giv ing out of the contract a couple ot weeks ago afforded one such vtry beautiful illustration. W hen the Superintendent advertised fir bids for the building two were ten tiered, by Messrs. Fiest Sc Chambers nc 1 by Mr. Daniel Dietzer. The bid .•I the former was the lowest, hut Mr. I hetzer is a member of the Company, and xs the “ boys ” were very anxious he should do the work they made up a .mm of some $300, which more than covered the difference, and deposited it in the City Treasury, whereupon the Council Committee, at their solicita lion, awarded the contract to Mr. I fictzer. Mayor Kogers, however, ve toed this action, on the ground that 1 he contract must go to the lowest bidder, and we are inclined to think lhat thu veto was right, although the mnie thing has l>oen done before. !>ut muik what followed. Fresh hide were advertised for, and again there were two tenders—hy Meshrs. Fiest A ('handlers, who art* launch Democrats, and hy Messrs. W illiams Sc Swartz, who are not. But i.liis time Messrs. Fien Sc Chambers hail ,#o/ the lowest bid, that of their compet itors being some $90 below them. W hen i bo bids were considered in committee, however, there happened to l#e a De mocratic majority, ami, lo! the Demo cratic firm of F. Sc C. received the award of the contract Now, it will be supposed, of course, tliat Mayor Rogers, carrying out the rule he liad laid down, th a t the contract could be gi u n to none but the lowest bidder, must have vetoed this action, xs ho did that preceding. N o t a b it of i t The lb publican meuiliers n aturally expect •td such a veto, to correct the wrong, but it never came. And tbat is how Messrs. Fiest A Chambers happen to lw the builders of the new house for Hook and Ladder Company No. 3, where they are discovered to lie put ting in bluestiiie instead of Medina. It is the .Dem o cratic way of doing things, you sie. I r is very much to the credit of the recent l<abor Congress in Philadelphia that it admitted colored representatives to seals, fully recognizing the equal rights of colored workmen in the or ganizations of labor. I t is even more to the credit of tiie colored workmen thus' represented, that one of choir dejegates, Mr. Myers, a negro ship wright o f Baltimore, wai able to say “ The colored men of this nation ere “ entirely opposed to the repudiation “ of the National debt. They go in “ for every honest dollar borrowed to “ lie honestly paid back.” T iikkk is no danger that the forth eouiing i Ecumenical ( ouncil at Koine will not lie stirred up hy some live questions, since Bishop Colenso au iiounccs that he intends to accept the Pope’s invitation, which was addressed to “ schism atic\ churches, and will be present at the Council. I t is not im pmliable that the liold Bishop of Natal may give His Holiness occasion, before he gets through with the (Ecumenical, to regret that he was so free with his invitations. ■ - ■ \ J \ P O L I T I C A L . He is aa cheer ful aud bright as any of these other old men that charge around so in the news papers, and is in e v e r y way as remarkable. Last November he walked five blocks in a rain storm without any shelter but an um brella, and oast his vote for Grant, remark ing that be had voted for forty-seven Presi dents—which was a lie. His “ second crop o f rich brown hair” arrived from New York yesterday, and he has a new set of teeth coming — from Philadelphia. H e ia [to be married next week to a girl 102 years old, who' still takes in washing. They have been engaged 8 9 years, bat their parents persistently refused their consent until three days ago. The importance of this nomination in its bearing upon tbe senatorial contest of this and the congressional contest of next year, is my excuse forgiving it so much attention at this time, and the great circulation of the E xprbw throughout the county, in ita several edition*, ia the most effective chan nel through which to let the masses know the facts. While attracting but little at tention outside, no campaign for years hm so vitally affected the great Republican in terests of this Congressional District.
