On lad y Noel’s representation, I deemed a reconciliation with Lord Byron practicable, and felt, most sincerely, a wish so aid in eifec ing There was not, on J.ady Noel’s part, any exaggeration of the facta, nor so far as 1 could perceive, any determination to |»re- vent a return te Lord Byron; certainly none was expressed when 1 sjtoke of a reconcilia tion. When you came to towu—in a)tout a fortnight, or perhaps more, after my lirst interview with Lady Noel—I wa* for the tirst time informed by you of facts utterly unknown, aa I have no doubt, to Sir Balpu and Lady Noel. W hatever the secret charge brought for ward a t this interview may nave bmn, it is evident that Dr. Lushinglon was persuaded of its truth and its gravity. Lord Byron always professed to lm ignorant of the mo tives of his wife’s conduct, aad complained that neither she nor her friends would make any specific charge which would give him an opportunity of self-vindication or atonement. He blamed himself severely for his general behavior, praised hia wife in the warmest terms, and declared that for a year he cherished the hope of reconcilia tion. Bat later in life, when this hope hail left him, he manifested an extremely bitter feeling toward his wife, and satirized her with great coarseness iu several of his poem*. If we are to suppose th a t he waa sincere iu the expression of these variona feelings—in his hope of reconciliation aud in h is subse quent bitterness —it will l*e very hard te lielieve tliat he had really heen guilty of the awful crime of which he is accused. ^ MRS. Next week the Peuuaylvania com pany will shorten the time live hours more. To meet this it is understood that the New' York Central aad connecting companies, will one week Horn Monday n ext p u t on a fast line between Chicago and New York, running both ways, and making the dis tance in thirteen hour* 1cm time than it ia now made, thus boating ths fastest time made by the Pennsylvania road tire hours. It is under stood that this new train will a t first run only over the < treat Western or northern route from the New York Central, because those companies have the cars, but the Lake shore or Southern companies will pro cure cars and put them on as soon as pos Bible. It is objected that either Mrs. Stowe or Lady Byrouhas made a misstatement grave enough to cast discredit upon the whole story, iu representing that the adulterous intrigue was carried oil for two years after their marriage, whereas their wedded life lasted ouly one year, andJjmnediati'ly after the separation Byron left Luj,. ’ •’•nl nev er saw his sister again. A mm.. . eful reading of the passage in question will show, we think, that Mrs. .Stowe’s statement amounts merely to this, that the intrigue lasted two year* in all. Elsewhere she say* that it liegan ltefore marriage. The following is the doubtful passage : “ Many women would hare been utterly crushed by such a disclosure; some would have lied from him immediately, and ex posed aud denounced the crime, (duly Byron iliil neither. When all the hope of womanhood died out of her heart, there arose within her, stronger, purer, and brighter, tliat immortal kind of love such as God feels for the sinner—the love of which Jesus Spoke, and which holds the oue wauderer of more account than the niucty and nine tliat went not astray. She would neither leave her husband nor be tray him, nor would she for one moment justify his sin; and hence came two years of convulsive struggle, iu which sometimes, for a while, the good angel seemed to gain grouud, an.l then the evil one returned with sevenfold vehemence.” By a siugular mistake the critics almost universally have understood this to lie a two years’ “ convulsive struggle” in Lady By ron's own breast, or between Lady Byron an.l h er husbaad. It will be seen, however, that Mrs. Stowe only represents the poet himself as struggling two yean with his sin. It is clumsily expressed, but the w riter—or, at any rate, her informant— probably did n o t mean toaay that the strug gle lasted for two years after Lady Byron dicovered the intrigue. LADY BY R on ’ s CHARACTER. As te Lady Byron's character, there are hardly two opinions. Mra. Stowe, we dare say, does not rate her too high. The lately published “ Diary and < ’orrespondence of Henry t ’rabb Robinson,” contains frequent mention of her as she was during the period of Mrs. Stowe’s intimacy, in ths latter part of her life. “ 1 consider her, ” says this acute observer, “ one of the best women of the day. Her means and her good-will are both great. 'She lives to do good,’ says Dr. King, and 1 lielieve this to be true.” “ I was much pleased with Lady Byron. .She is a very remarkable woman, and ia most generous and high-minded. ” HER MENTAL CONDITION. I )r. King writes te Robinson in February, 1S54: “ Lady Byron is now quite recovered. She is always feeble, and obliged to hus band her strength, snd calculate her pow ers; but her mind is ever intact, pure, and lorty. It aveuis te poor forth ita streams of bcnovoleuce and judgment even from the sick-bed; a perennial fountain. Her state of mind has always given me confidence in her severest illness. Yet her power of bearing fatigue occasionally, as during the illness of her daughter, is as wonderful. ” T H E M O D E R N B R I G A N D . HF. Thk Lkfkk ok T a r i i a i . u a . — A traveller relates a touching story relative te his ex perience* m Venezuela. A broad expanse of Iteautiful vegetation stretched on all sides of the beautiful lakeof Taricagua, the prin cipal ornament of oue of the loveliest scenes in the world. Looking across its breadth, towards the city, oue sees a glittering ex panse of silver water, studded with fairy islets, rich masses of foliage of every hne, a city in the distance that seem* te be built of white marble, and hi?ls that gradually swell into blue mountain*. Ascending the mountains, the traveller still sees the beau tiful Lake, until the grand forests intervene, and the scene then assumes another aspect of the Protean but omnipresent beauty of the tropical oonntriea. (in one of the moun tain ridge* the traveller was caught in a tierce, pelting, sweeping rain which he hail experience of in similar regions. He and his attendant looked about for shelter, and found it. Seeing s low hnt on tbe side of tlie road, they m i le np te it, and knocked. I’he door was ojiened by a short but very squarely-built woman of middle age and forbidding appearance, who objected strong ly to their entering. However, ths storm looked even uglier than she did, so they would not take a denial, but went in, sod seated themselves on a rude bench. The travellera asked her how she could live alone in such a wild forest. She said she had had a friend, who had been killed hy a snake, but that she waa not afraid to remain, though alone. She added that she should very likely be b itten by a snake, too, for serpents of all kinds were most numerous, especially cancabols (rattlesnakes). There were alao panthers, she said, b i t she did not fear them much. I t occurred te the traveller that she waa probably a leper, and consequently safe from human savages, and necessarily an outcast. This is a simple, plain picture of one of the most melancholy conditions of existence possible to a human being—a whole tragedy in a few lines, the story of a life of fear, privation, and utter solitude. A m e r i c a n S t u d e n t s . — A t the recent meeting of the Philological Association at Poughkeepsie, President McCoah, of Prince- tea. stated that he waa “prepared, from a pretty extensive acquaintance with tteTuni versitiea o f Great Britain, and with aome of those on the Continent, to say that the aver age attainments of oollege graduates here aud there are about equal.” MARRIED.
