N e w S t y le o f S t r t l o n s l C a n a l B o a ts. Y e s terday m o rning th e sectional canai boat bu ilt a a d owned by W m. Frick, of M iddletow n , P a ., upon a plan paten ted Ly him , started on a t r i p to Albany. She Man loaded w ith 360 tons of bitum inous coal T h e boat is bu ilt on a novel plau, totally unlike any of th e sectional boats heretofore constructed. Instead of the rigid con nee* tion betw e en t h e tw o sections which is co:m m o n ly m ade, t h e y a r e liuked together by an arrangem e n t w h ich perm its them to be brought to any desired angle w ith each other. Each section is a distinct boat—in fact a n y tw o canal boats of ordinary con struction m a y be coupled by th is arrange m e n t w ithout any prelim inary change in them . T h e coupling, w h ich is t h e only feature paten ted by M r. Frick, consists of a liar, rigidly a ttached b y one e n d to th e stem of th e forw a rd section and th e o ther e n r tu rn in g upon a pivot in th e bow of the rear section. A n ordinary s teering wheel is con-* nectcd b y chains to t h is b a r in such a m anner th a t th e steersm a n , w ith his hand on the wheel, has perfect control over both sec tions. N o rudder is used while th e sections rem ain connected, th e rear section a c ting as a rudder. Iu th e trial trip yesterday the motive power was furnished b y a team of mules. In consequence of th e s tiff wresterly breeze w h ich prevailed, a strong current was s e tting through th e slips Nos. 2 a n d £ directly across th e canal. This furnished, a severe t e s t of th e steering powers of the new arrangem e n t, w h ich te s t was passed successfully through. The a d v a n tages claimed for th e invention are t h a t tw o canal boats coupled togethei by t h is a rrungenijpt. can be managed by tb^ same c rew required for a single boat, ami tow ed w ith an a d d ition of o n ly about th ir ty per c e n t, of th e power required to move one boat. B u t i t is by tho application of steam t h a t the full advantages are expected to be obtained. A n engine and wheel placed in th e stern of the last section will not only move th e entire craft but tow another sectional b o a t of th e sam e c apacity. T h u s the two boats w ith a to tal carrying capacity of 32,000 bushels of c<‘rn a>-e e x pected to be moved w ith one engineer au<l tw o s te e rsm e n to m anage them . The gen eral introduction of th is style of boat w o u ld require no enlargem e n t o f t h e canal but th e lengthening of the locks to a sizt sufficient to perm it th e passage of the two sections w ithout uncoupling. • if the invention proves as successful in actual practice as i t promises to do, it seems destined to greatly reduce th e expense of canal transportation w ithout any heavy outlay for e n largem e n t of th e canal pnsm .
