While travelling a couple of weeks since, we heard front the lips of a friend, one of the.most heart-rendijng, recitals we bave listened to for a long time. He was put off from a steamboat at or near VYoli Island, about twenty-five miles be low tbe mouth of the Ohio, for the purpose' of collecting a debt frctm a man living about flvq miles back in the country, on the Missouri §ide> we think. With a carpet bag io liis hand, he had followed a narrow path about three miles, when became across a small cabin. Yet ‘ cabin? would not' describe the p ace of habitation, for such it proved lo be. ft was a litt'e dilapidated shed, with no boards on one side, and great cre vices on the other sides, and in the roof. He would have passed it by, but moans from the inside told that it was occupied. Wishing to in quire his road, he stopped, and stood before the open side ot the shed, and gazed upon a specta cle, which, as he said, was present belore his eyes days afterwards, and haunted him in his sleep. We describe what he saw, as he told us, only saying, that strange as the story may seem, lull reliance can be placed upon his words. I here was not a bed or chair in tjie shed, but stretched upon the bare ground luy^he bodyoi a youngish loosing woman, who had evidently just died. Her form was almost a perfect skeleton, yet the lace was that of a refined aud beautiful woman. Ou her breast lay nn infant of about six months old, with its mouth to the breast of its mother, and dead. And sitting up in a cor ner ot the shed, and staring the traveller iu the face with glazed eyes, was what he thought ano ther corpse, but life was yet in it. The figure was that of a girl apparently about ten years old. She could not raise to her feet, and yet she w as uot sick. She tv as literally dying of starva- tion. By the side of the woman, and clasping her hand, lay a man coveted with blood and ap parently in a dying stale. The girl could uot speak, but the man cried ‘ water’ in a feeble voice, and pointed to the girl as if to at- vvant ol l tiact the stranger’s attention to her. Thetrnvel- | lc, Mr. J., ot Cincinnati, hastened away, taking with him a tin pan, and says he never ran harder in his li fe than he did about half a mile to a small stream lie had passed. On liis return, he found the man still alive, and gave him water, which he eagerly drank.— He could then speak in a whisper. He pointed to the girl and said ‘she’s starving.’ Air. The winter, instead of injuring the seed, is an advan tage to them. They should be sowed in rows wide apart so as to cultivate deeply and break up the soil that has been pressed down by snows and rains. Stevens, iu his Book of the Farm, says that, according to Colonel Le Courteur, the weight of a good crop varies from thirteen fo twenty-seven tois per acre, (in thto island of Jersey, in the Channel,) tbe latter quantity being sufficient to support twelve Jersey cows for six months. In thi« island they have been found to yield a heavier crop than the Altringham carrot, in the ratio of eight hundred and forty to two hundred and sixty-one. As the parsnip contains six per cent more mucilage than the carrot, the Colonel conceives that the difference is sufficient to ac count for the superior fattening as well as but- ryaeeous quality of the parsnip. The result of experiment has shown that not only in neat cat had when he used to sit smoking in Ironi ofthe village inn under tihe por trait ol George the third, quaffing the gpod liquor of his friend N.cholas Yudder. It is to the people of Walton we are chiefly in debted for the Delaware Plank Reffff. And al though we must not omit fospeak in high commen dation of the liberality ol’those citizens of Hancock, who Trim] the commencement have given thetVeffeo- tive aid to the work, yet to Walton as having a deep er interest and therefore a more active agency to Its completion, tbe credit of the enterprise wiff be chiefly awarded. Planted amongst mountains, having experienced but little hitherto to arouse a spirit of activity,—now ittabtfestlng tn -the tltini generation, the characteristic energy of (ts New England parenmge—wide awake at the right time, exhibiting itself m the completion of wor ■ 'Im beneficial effects of which will be felt as long as Ireemen shall inhabit tjjese vallies, and flocks and her’dsshallcroptherfchpasturageoi the surrounding hills. That there must have been energetic 'mantle to move in ibis enterprise ts certain, when it Its con sidered how unaccustomed the people of this coun ty are to efforts of the kind, Ibr even in placed triore Ictvarabiy situated, there ure many whoso a!iti iQ Are wealth therefore in 4hese times conietehut little distinction. The desire (o be considered rjth has justly Come to be regarded as an ignoble am bition. When a man has finished firs ccurse, very few care lo enquire how much property he’ possess ed, or even what public stations he held. The question is what has be done? What toot-prints does he leave on tbe sands of tjtns? How much profitable employment did he furnish to labor,— how much encouragement to the arts of. civilized life which need to be improved andperpetoated. What has he done for the general diffusion of mor al, religious and toteltectaai atftaJnment 1 What facilities has he helped to furnish to excite and re ward indqmrX ip its. various departments® If he has done P°ne of these things, hej may have been richer than Aston, and thrice governor of the State, find yet his name will iade to insignificance by the side of that of the yankee schoolmaster who made the first cotton gin. Tbe bnly tablet on whiich any ornate name can be honorably and inuffaceabty written, is the veritable good he has done, be if lit- Ule or much. 1 In times tar m the- future many a traveller cross ing the Alps om the Simplon road shall bless the name of Bonaparte for its construction—never hav ing heard of the fields of Au 6 terlitz and Marange ; and the code Napoleon will outlast many such em- pires as the one he established. If any one thinks I hade taken up an irrelevant subject, be will see tbat it is kindred to our pur pose when he reflects that it is not the actual es* tent of a public, wqrk in. yards or cntles, thal fixes the attention, but its perfeciaessfor the object de signed, and the intiipsic worth of the motives and exertions brought to bear m fts prosecution, It is easy to demonstrate that the town of W^iton on the completion of its toad wtli have performed pro portionately a greater work, Ihnn it would be for tne state of New York alone to construct a plank road from St. Louts to the Pacific. I omit the par ticulars of a calculation which any parson can easi ly make, as I suppose an appeal to arithmetic would have little to interest those who bave already ooted the bill. Some may hug their pockets, and say, will not the lown be ruined, by such an outlay 7 Far from it. That the liberal shall fie made rich is a sound maxim of pofitieat economy^ founded open the declaration of Holy writ. “ In every associated effort for a common bene fit, there is something to conform the spirit to that ol’oar liberal institutions.
