\ Dear Abby . . . Talk To Him PRIN T E D P A T T I M DEAR ABBY: Fve been hap pily married for 18 years and now I find myself hurt and m appointed. A girl where my husband works gave him a shirt for Val entine’s Day because she thought he was a “nice guy.” He said he was surprised. Since theft she told him that her hus band had left her. Also that all men were rats and in time he would cheat on his wife, too. Now my husband bought HER a present for her birthday ■e b cause she’s a “nice girl” and he feels sorry for her. I told him he was a married man and had no business buying her a present and if he loved me he wouldn’t give it to her. Well, he gave it to her anyway. Should I get the girl’s phone nufober and call her up and tell her she’s making, trouble? Sign rnp “HURT” 0 DEAR HURT: Don’t call her. She’d only go crying to your husband. His “protec tive” instincts would be aroused and it would be them against you. What you need is a better line of communica tion with your husband. * * * DEAR ABBY: Our daughter just married a man with two children. He supposedly got his divorce in New York State. He ■ claims that he does not have to support his children. We think that is very unusual, don’t you? We have reason to believe that this man is not divorced. We consulted the sheriff in our county and he wasn’t able to tell us how we could go about finding out i£ this man was di- T V T i m e ' NEW YORK (AP) — Robert Montgomery, actor and produc er who served President Dwight D. Eisenhower as television consultant, calls the TV camer as “mass lie detectors,” reveal ing more of a man’s character when he is unexpectedly caught |n an informal moment than during planned appearances. Specifically, Montgomery re ferred to situations where a public figure was filmed at an airport leaving a courthouse or committee hearing Mid brush ing aside questions and micro phones — all in sharp contrast to his charming, winsome man ners under studio conditions. “I think the public sees the difference,” Montgomery said. “And I think it carries impact.” Montgomery, after a success ful acting career in Hollywood, turned television producer in 1950 and for the next seven years turned out the “Robert Montgomery Presents” series, live, from New York. He is par ticularly interested in the Fed eral Communications Commis sion’s current interest in net work ownership, total or partial, of* most entertainment shows they put on the air. “I would have been on the air still, I think, if I had consented to giving a network a share in my show,” he said. “I say it is virtually impossible today to get a show on a major network without giving the network a piece of it.” K the situation should change so that independent packagers were given more of a chance, Montgomery believes that .“the truly creative people” will re turn to the medium — and “I’ll try to get back with another dramatic series.” Montgomery has broad busi ness interests and makes an occasional appearance on tele vision. Next Thursday he will narrate an ABC special, \Man Invades the Sea.” Recommended weekend view ing: Saturday — “The Bold Men,” ABC, 7:30-8:30 p,m. (Eastern Standard Time), special about men in death-defying occupa tions, like Stuntmen and racing car drivers. Sunday — “The American Sportsman,” ABC, 5-6 p.m., showing an African buffalo hunt, perch fishing and goose shooting; D a n n y Thom as spe cial, NBC, 9-10, w ith Jim Na- bors and Mickey Rooney guest starring. Can you give us a clue as to how we can get this information? It’s very im portant. CONCERNED PARENTS DEAR PARENTS: Consult a lawyer. If a divorce exists, it will not be difficult to prove. * * * DEAR ABBY: I invited my friends 'over for potluck lunch and what I hoped would be an enjoyable afternoon as I had planned games and entertain ment for them. To my surprise, after the lunch, one woman took out her knitting, and another woman had her needlework. (I* didn’t ask anyone to bring their work as I had other plans.) I was just sick, and didn’t know what to do, so I just kept still. It spoiled everything for the rest of the guests. Do you think I should have told them at the beginning that I didn’t think they should sit and dtf their work at a party? Or was I right in letting them do as they pleased? DISAPPOINTED IN PEOPLE D E A R DISAPPOINTED: You should have gone ahead with the games and entertain-. ment. My guess is that the knitting and needlework would have gone back in the bags. * * * DEAR ABBY: I am 21, in nurses’ training, and have just become engaged to a fine young man who is a senior in college. We’ve gone together for three years. We plan to get married as soon as Stuart graduates \in June. My problem is my mother. She wants me to have 'a big church wedding with a white gown and veil, brides maids and ushers and the whole bit. Stu and I don’t want any big splashes. All we want is a simple ceremony, performed by our pastor in the small chapel of oui' church. I am the only girl in my family (I have four brothers), and Mother says I “owe” it to her and Dad to have a big church wedding. I think it 'is a foolish waste of money and, besides, my father doesn’t have that much. I hate to dis appoint my mother, Abby, but do you think I should be made to have a big church wedding just because she wants to put on a big show for the relatives? NO BIG SPLASH DEAR NO: No. * * * Problems? Write to ABBY, Box 69700, Los Angeles, Calif. For a personal reply, enclose a stamped, self-addressed en velope. * * * Hate to write letters? SALES — SERVICE — RENTALS 67 Main Street Batavia, N. Y. Ask the Teacher By SHIRLEY SCHRAUB DEAR MRS. SCHRAUB: Do you feel that a person who never finished high school can be just as educated as some one who graduated? I feel a person’s education isn’t limited to classrooms only, although perhaps a major part is. If a person loves knowledge and constantly reads about the arts, science, etc., he can be well informed by continually learn ing worthwhile things, can’t he? My point is, can people with 8th grade learning have, with continued effort on their own, just the same rate of intelli gence as those who finish high school? Are people all consi dered illiterates whose educa tion ended with the 8th grade? H. L. ANSWER— Dear Mr. L.: There is a difference between being illiterate and not having a formal education. Any per son with a degree of intelli gence, an inquiring mind and the desire can acquire an edu cation. He is by no means illi terate, although he does not have a formal education. This can in most cases, be acquired only through the discipline and programming of actual school ing under professional guidance. By and large, a person who has completed 8th grade and is interested in reading widely newspapers, books, periodicals ■ is probably intelligent and can acquire a broad, practical education. He is not illiterate by any means! One can be in telligent and educated with no formal education or degree. * * * DEAR MRS. SCHRAUB: How can I help my son in crease his knowledge of words? He is thirteen years old and doesn’t seem to have a large enough vocabulary. I know that Latin is supposed to be of some help in this area, but he is not studying it. He has chosen Spanish. Do you think it is important enough for him to transfer over to Latin? Will he get- enough added benefits to make it worth while? Mrs. H. N. ANSWER- Dear Mrs. N.: Latin is a wonderfully inter esting language but, if your son is not really interested in it, he should not study it merely for the vocabulary help it gives. It is true, however, that a knowledge of word parts from Latin and Greek is a great help in bringing meaning to unfami liar words. This can be such an important and interesting study that I believe it should be a required course in every junior or senior high school. I have compiled a list of the prefixes, suffixes and word parts from Latin and Greek ori gins that are most frequently found in the English language, together with explanations and illustrations of their uses and meanings. I am sending you a copy which I am certain your son will find most useful. H* * You can increase your voca bulary if you understand the meanings of the various parts of words that are based on La tin and Greek origins, Shirley Schraub’s leaflet, “Vocabulary Builders — Prefixes, Suffixes and Word Parts gives a concise explanation of some of the most common of these word parts. For a copy, simply send a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope and 10 cents in coin to Shirley Schraub, care of this newspaper. -<S>jTHE BATAVIA DAILY- NEWS 7 I Friday, March. 12, 1065 ■* I s F u n FAMILY DINNER An excellent version of a clas sic Armenian dish.
