Watortis D.C., Diim:tor Hizhonor says that he has seen the “Garden-of Eden.” Responding to a question from a resident of the Lower East Side on a nationwide radio broadcast last week, guest Edward I. Koch said that while he has personally visited the Lower East Side oasis created by artist Adam Purple, where the City still intends to bulldoze the flowerbeds of Eden to make room for public housing. “You can’t have it both ways,” explained the Mayor. Koch was appearing on the Mutual Radio Network’s “Larry King Show,” a five-hour talk program which is carried by “over 270, stations,” according to the network, and' reaches an audience of “three to four million.” Locally, the King show is broadcast between midnight and 5am by WOR (AM 910). Koch ignored the caller’s suggestion that “a huge vacant lot on Avenue C “might pro vide a location for the project. Located bet ween 5th and 0th streets, the site suggested by the caller is empty save for a sign which declares: “We Demand Housing Promised On This Site.” “I am distressed,” said the Myor over the airwaves, “by some of the opposition from the Lower East Side.” He said that he at tributes it to “people who don’t want housing except for themselves.—B.O’D.
