SPECIALTIES GO FORWAHD List Fails to Jtally Sntisfac-- ' only After Soiling- - .\Pre- ssure Sulfide's. The. stork market becati (he new week yesterday In the position of having already discounted the possible easing of the. money market back to normal, and, therefore, had to depend entirely upon Its own Initiative for a resumption of the upward campaign. Had there been a favorable decision of the- - stock dividend case, It would have, been a very easy matter for the Street to havo gotten up enough extra enthusiasm to have pushed thn market through the old highs of last week, huf without this the market was left pretty much to Its own resources. Thft conscque.nce,'was that as soon-a- s the Initial bulge- - resulting from tho over-Sund- accumulation of buying orders was over the market had to face, eome real profit taking. It did well In the faco of tho realizing, but never really got a start forward again except In seme of the specialties such as the rubbers and tho equipment stocks. The rise In the66 stocks went alone very well, but thev could not be expected to lead the whole market forward after the upturn that has already been experenced. Tho whole truth of tho matter wa that there was nothing whatever yester- day to put atocka up. Half of the finan cial, cemmunlty unaoueteaiy sum neia tha view- that the return of easy money was enough, to put the- - market through tha roof, but the other ana, equally im- portant; half of the speculative frater- nity realized that the market had al ready discounted the money suuauon and. therefore, needed something new to put It up further. Either one of several considerations would nave aone vr well under the circumstance?, but. In the absence of any of them the fact could hardly be overlooked that tha market haa gone forward steadily for a fort- night past; that It haa already gono be yond the point wnicn nas oeen oxpecien of It and. last but not least, that tho money authorities have not relaxed their grip on the share list In the slightest way. On the contrary there will be an- other meeting of the Federal Reserve Board. In Washington Tno ooara may natdlscuss the stock market situa tion directly, but It Is certain to havo something to say about speculation In grains, cotton and otner commooiucs. This would not necessarily hurt the share list, but It would be severe notice that the present la no time for a bull I?1-- . . ....... It looaea yesteraay, irom m mmum. In which the active Issues fluctuated, aa though the market was tired, that la to say, as If It needed a rest. The profit taking was not any heavier than usual, nor waa the selling any more than could be expected after last week's rise, but tho significant thing was that tho mar- ket refused to rally saUsfactorlly In tho nnal period after It appeared that the selling was over. Then Instead of going forward again the speculation shifted Into the specialties, such as the rubbers, tho equipments, the oils, Ac., In such a way as to Indicate, Important selling of the standard' Issues. Whether or not this selling was as Important as It looked, there was a marked change In brokers' opinion. Whereas most houses heretofore havo been committed abso- lutely to the bull side, they yesterday began to urge conservatism In making new commitments' and the taking ad- vantage of alt bulges in order to get rid of present long stock. Tho money market was very much easier after tho start The opening was 10 per cent, which was also the rate for renewals. After having loaned there alt during the forenoon the rato dropped to 6 per cent, nt the close, but even this failed to have any effect on the chare list. It Is taken for granted now that the money difficulties are over until March, at least, but at the same tlmo It Is also equally as certain that Wall Street does not Intend to make easy money the basis of a bull market. On tho contrary, something more substan- tial than this la needed and, until It comes, most Interests believe that tho market will drop back Into the trading era from which It was dislodged two weeks ago. There was very little of In the foreign exchange market. Sterling and francs were Arm to steady, while the rest of the list was about un- changed from last Saturday's closing. MONEY AND EXCHANGE. Money and Ibo Market. When tho wholo pluvlanx of stock market factors Is simmered down It nmounw to Just thin the market's courso In the lmmcdlato futuro will de- pend ulraoot entirety on dally the money situation, and so long aa money Is high tho market Is under pressure of an ef- fective broke, under which It cannot make considerable progress. OuWa factors, of courso, were given consider- ation yesterday. Tho failure of tho Su- premo Court to announce any decision In the McComber case was a disappoint- ment und occasioned somo selling. But the largest factor, and It might bo said tho main factor, is monoy. The docreaso 5f! In tho reserve ratio ot tno Foacrai no-ser- Bank to tha new low of 38.7, aa shown by Saturday's bank ttatement, commanded more than usual attention In wall Street. Tho 10 por cent, opening and renowal rate for money was not a surprise. On tho other haiul many peo- - pie had anticipated an even higher quota- - tlon. The tact tnai money aeciineu to a per cent, at tho close and was In con siderable supply gave tno mariiet a- xeei-In- g of confidence In tho late afternoon which nothing else could havo done. X3lvo us 6 per cent, money,\ earn tne manager of a urge commission nouso yesterday, \and wo will give you a good markot. Hawsers, nowever, navo In tho last few months that the best brake In the world for a fast mar- ket Is high money and they are not hes- itating to sit on tho Hd at tho slightest provocation.\ Antlclpato Blast on Speculation. It would not surprise the Wall Street fraternity In tho least if it woum navo to survive a chill blast from the confer ence of bankers with officials of tho Fcd- - cr.-i- l Ilcnervo Board, which meets in Washington In fact something of tho sort Is widely expected. It will ha directed nrobably against unreason able speculation which ha3 been going nn In entton and farm and oil lands. Speculation In stocks, particularly tho wild speculation which worried tno feu-or- Reservo Board so much In Novem- ber, lias practically ceased, but that would not prevent stocks from getting ti reverse English kick should a general statement on speculation be forthcoming. General Alarm. The, neeullarltles of the speculative mind aro subject to many twists and turns, but more particularly to the tem- perature of the feet, A largo commis- sion house having several branch offices nt nut vesterday morning a general alarm urging, begging and pleading Its customers to ret out of stocks. Diligent Inquiry failed to show Just the reason fnr tha alarm, which may havo been that tho member of tho firm who 6ent t nut hart been Dersuaded by tho bear lshnesa of \tho boy speculator.\ At any rate half a doien equally largo houses were advising their customers at tho samo time that stocks wero a purchase on any dip. ' United State Robber. Tfcn fart that the directors of United States Rubber have not decided definitely Just what form the extra promised by r-- Ramuel P. Colt will take is vminr thn sneculatlve element In fever of excitement. It Is a certainty, of course, that the extra will be paid, and the only uncertainty lies In Just trhat it will be. The nther Is said to 60 a 10 per etiu. tw dividend. rat and Call Exchange-- . Some of the largest dealers in prlvl-lege- s are planning the organization of a put and call exchange In order thor- oughly to systematize the put and call business and remove It from the hit or miss methods under which) It is con- ducted. The privilege paper has a real use in the market, particularly In limit- ing losses on large orders by a compar- atively email outlay, but the present method In which puts and calls aro hawked about the streets with no stable quotations on any paper la entirely un- satisfactory to any number of people who would like to trade In the paper. The trouble under the present status Is that there Is no manner of fixing a quo- tation. Just, for Instance, a dealer yes- terday offered Corn Products 8 points up and 5 down: another wanted 10 points up and 6 down. Another dealer had some calls on Marine common at 6 up and 4 down, while a third offered a 'call 7 up and S down. It is Just such erratic quotations that prevent the put and call market from being a sat- isfactory one. It Is planned to establish an exchango and post definite quotations based on tho market'3 action for a day three or fout times In that day. Mullina Body.
