The cotton market went lower yester- day In rather quiet trading, Early sell- ing was attributed largely to the Nat- ional Glnners' Association's hearten re- port, which estimated the 1919-192- 0 crop s: 11:120,000 bales, excluding linters, nsnlnst their last month llguro of The report made the, amount 0 cotton ginned prior to December 1 as l', 000,000 ' bales, against 9,571,414 last j tar and '.'.713,529 In 1917. The asso- ciation crop cstlmato allows 2.800,000 Lales for Texas. A guess of fifty-fo- n.embors of tho New York Cotton Ex- change placed the crop size at 10,700,-00- 0 bales. Liverpool was rather easy yesterday, breaking sharply In some options fol- lowing tho opening, which was not far from due. Spot business In the English centre was less active ngaln, solos ii mounting to 71000. The weather map Indicated a good deal of cloudiness over the Central Belt and there were scat- tered showers in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Sentiment lii trado circles was without doubt affected by tho weakness in foreign exchange rates. The coal situation was also disquieting a? was our trouble with Mexico. The news that Consul Jonklmi had been Came too late in tho session to have much effect There was early selling by Liverpool and local professionals .at the opening, frit sales showing a loss of 28 to 44 I.olnts. Trade support came into ev- ident after the call and there was a email recovery, but buying was very poorly sustained and Increased profes-blon- al bear pressure soon told. Japa- nese Interests were good buyors of. May early and Liverpool sold more distant .1 I......I..., ynft. Am. HM nnalrl, rntllA both ways. On the whole eentlmenn to as mixed and not a little bearish com- ment was heard. The market's nervous tcne made for lack' of confidence in trado circles. Special CabU Dttpatch to Tits Bum from the lomlon Tlfaet Bervlet. OopvrigM, 19U, alt riaMi rturvti. London, Dec 5. There wero few features of Interest In stock markets and their general tone was dull, business In mor directions showing ft' further contraction. The price of the 5 per cent war loan roacuwt a new low level, although in the early hours the market showed more rcalstanco. Japanesa bonds advanced on Ameri- can buying, while Peruvian Corporation preferences, after falling heavily on the dividend statement, recovered practically the whole of their Initial decline. Ar- gentine rails came Into favor, and at the mining end of the house thera was a disposition to buy some entailer priced South African shares. There was very little demand for accommodation In the short loan market and conditions remained extremely easy. Old money was continued at rates ranging from 4 per cont to 3 percent, while fresh monoy was offered with great freedom at 2 per cont, lenders finally accepting 1 por cent for un- employed balances at the close. Now York exchange reacted sharply to 3.88 and the franc was weak, Paris closing at 40.84 M. HOLLAND CONSERVES SILVER. Dutch Government Brings In JTcyt Mlntliie mil. Special Ca&fo DttpatcS to Tns Sen from th London Times Bmlct. CopvrioM, 1919. 'all riaMi reiened. London, Dec. 5. Tho Dutch Govern- ment has lost no tlrao in preparing for tho possible disappearance of its present silver coinage should silver rise much above Its present figures. Silver 2, 1 and one-ha- lf florin pieces have a silver content of 045 u thpueund. The Gov- ernment has just brought In a bill for minting new silver coins for Holland and the Dutch Indies with a silver content of 300 a thousand. As tho silver content of the existing coining Is at present still about C per cent below its present face value It will be soen that the Dutch Government is acting with much fore- sight In the matter. Presumably no change will be made In subsidiary silver coinage, tho pure silver content of which Is only 640 a thousand. .One result of the passing of such a mcasuro would be to reduce Dutch re quirements of silver for coinage. Hol- land Is a very small factor In tho silver market. rClostnr.- - Bid.
