DEALING TO BE NAIUIOW Weekly Letter Writers Believe Money Situation Has Been Straightened Out. A tradlns \Market with neither wide swings upward nor abrupt declines, la what Wall Street commission houses generally are expecting, which Is made clear by tho tone of the letters sent out by those houses to their customers this week. In nearly all of the letters the belief Is expressed that the money situ ation has been straightened out and that thero will be no Important liquidation. On the other hand the banks' attitude Is pretty generally believed to be such that nny attempt to renew the big bull move- -. ment of the last few months would db met with Instant application of tho brakes. Merrill, Lynch & Co. say: \One can look for a narrow trading market for some time to como. The call money rate which reacted to 6 per cent, shows that the banking interests ara satisfied at the present time with the shakeout In the market. Stocks that had been soli before the break were being taken back last Wednesday and have been put away for further higher prices, which are looked for the early part of next year. Should tho market rlso sharply the banks will apply the brakes as they did a week ago. The market will not only bo a trading nffalr, but will be one of specialties as well. The most fa- vored group of stocks at the present time aro the sugars, and this Is ac- counted for by the high prices expected for the new crops.\ W'renn Bros. & Co. say: \This Is perhaps the first Instance In which tho machinery of tho Federal reserve system has been used In any largo way to man- age a bad monetury sltutlon ; mid the machinery has worked well. First tho Clearing House banks obtained much as- sistance through rediscounts at tho New York Federal Reserve Bank, and then the latter when Its own reserves ran low, fortified itself through rediscounts with other Federal reserve banks. Tct the shortage of loanable funds Is nation- al rather than local, and tho troublo has been alleviated rather than cured. The existing situation, therefore, may result In nn easier call money market, or a reduction of the selling pressure In the slock markot, or even In dullness and flnrness In the latter, but between now and the early part of next montlfJt Is difficult to Bee how It can result in any actual resumption of tho bull move- ment.\ , N Money Situation Dominates. J. S. Bache & Co. says: \The market Is dominated by the money situation that Is, by the necessity of increased bank reserves for the purpoto ofre-plenlshln- tj which levy has been made upon tho funds u.cd in speculation in Wall Street. Last week, through the strenuous liquidation which had taken place, the caBh reserves of tho New York Federal Reserve Bank were ad- vanced from 40j per cent to 43BJ per cent. For the entire system of Federal banks the rcservo rose from 46.8 per cent, to 4T.1 per cent. All thin is In the desired direction and the Indications at this writing are for a further Increase In reserves. Inasmuch as the necurlty and Investment market owes Its decline principally to the situation in money, it Is reasonable to believe that further drastic liquidation will not follow, but even with tho acute pressure removed It will take some time to readjust ma- chinery and a solrerod attitude Is bound to prevail.\ Anderson, Bruns & Co. say: \Tne fact that tho outlook for easy money is uncertain would seem to Indicate an Ir- regular stock market for some tlm.e to como. Tho economic rehabilitation of Kurope means that this country will do a large export business In the years to come, but until the foreign cxchange.slt-iiatlo- n Is clarified security prices can hardly be expected to advance mate- rially above their present level.\ W. J. Wollman & Co. say: \Under prevailing conditions we believe 'that op- erations will have to be conducted with extreme caution. Money may become easier, but It Is hardly likely to be thf result of a slowing down of business and a decline In prices. The end of the year may bring further selling for In- come tax purposes, but aside ,from op- erations of this character we believe that pressure on the market will be dictated by the news from day to day. Railroad securities. Including stocks as well as tho bonds of tho less prosperous systems, appear to offer an attractive opportunity to the patient buyer. Rail-rna- d legislation, while subject to Irri- tating delays, must Insure adequate re- turn to tho roads In order to meet the sentiment of the country.\ Look for Better Market. E. W. Wagner & Co. says: \Wo have reached tho point whera those malting commitments In securities should Ignore the fascination of stock market legorde-mal- n and be guided solely by invest- ment merit. The. great bulk of our se- curities have Intrinsic worth probably in excess of their selling prices. Invest- ment speculation Is constructive, and there will be many favorablo oportunl-tle- s presented. The final month of the year Is Invariably a period of liquida- tion. On January 1 next thefo will be a huge reinvestment demand growing out of the heavy Interest In dividend dis- bursements. Liquidation of the last two weeks seems to havo been quite thorough and it Is logical to look for a decidedly Improved market In tho closing weeks of the year. At this time there is evldenco of an unwieldy short account, nnd since there Is so much pessimism In profes- sional circles as a result of the defeat of the peace treaty high rrioney rates and demoralized fnrelci pTrlinniron If la likely that tlftf.bear contingent will over stay tho market.\ Halle & Stleglltz say: 'The decline In values yesterday afternoon can bo ex- plained by no onefactor. It may have been due to the selling In tho coppers In- duced by poor earning statements made public by Utah and Chlno ; to the re- currence of a delicate situation between our country nnd Mexico; to the deadlock In the negotiations between coal opera- tors and miners and (he knowledge that the scarcity of coft coal Is affecting seriously all industry, or possibly the dlsllko of further Oovi'rnmont Interfer- ence as Instanced by the granting of food control to Attorney-Gener- Pal- mer.\ . \Gillespie Meeds & Co. say : \We are still of the opinion that Intrinsic values are within the price prevailing In the stock exchange this week. Tho market, however, has been unfavorably affected by tho thunderous utterances and warn- ings of those sitting closo to tho sources of credit and extension, and this, ac- companied by an unusually protracted and almost undevlatlng condition of ex- cessively high money has caused dis- couragement to many holders of se- curities. Wo believe that this condition will gradually Improve, and In the ab- sence of unforseen events calculated to accentuate the present uneaslnett that the pressure will be relieved.\ .1 I BONDS IN NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE.
