REAL ESTATE NEWS, NOTES AND GOSSIP Mortgage Market Unfavor-nbl- y Influenced by Flurry on Wall Street. jsrirDTXG SITUATION GOOD Total of October's Contracts Greater Than Any Other Month This Year. - While admitting that general' business In tho United States ! In a very sound coition in Plto of JilKh price. cxCcbb profit taxep, labor controversies and other Industrial deterrent, construction authorities appear to anrco that, the wok's flurry In the stock market has exerted an unfavorable Influence- - on tho real cstato mortgage-- , business anuon Investment building. rn the faco of this slightly' depressing Influence, however, construction jvork continues fairly satisfactory for this sea. ion of tho year. According to statistics fathered by the I YV. Dodge Company, October was ft banner building month, the building permits Issued sh6wlng a wbstantlal upward trend from the slight slump In September and a gain of 447 per cent, over the October operations of last year. Building contracts awarded during Oc- tober In the territory north of tho Qhto and east of the Missouri rivers amounted to I311.3S2.000, which was greater than the figure for any previous month this year. It also represented a gain of over September. The October figures brought tho .total Xor contract awards for the first ten months of 1919 up. to ?2.m,i53,0j00, which Is greater than the total for any entire, year previous to 1919. In fact these figures Indicate an actual volume of building operations during the first tin months of 1919 somewhat greater than the actual yearly annual volume for the Ave years prior to 1919. During the last week the tendency of srtces on building materials has been up rather than down, according to the data gathered by the P. W. Dodga Company. Six weeks ago common brick, delivered en the Job In New York city, was selling at f 18.15 a thousand. To-da- y the price Is 122.50. Brick prices as quoted this week by the A'merlcan Contractor show the prevailing prices In St. Louts, Den- ver, Dallas, Boston. Cleveland, Pittsburg, Indianapolis and Kerr Orlans higher than six weeks ago. Vitrified clay pipe Is higher than thirty days ago, and un- treated timber piling prices aro advanci- ng, and the general trend of the lumber market, with few exceptions. Is upward. Labor costs are holding firm and the agreement between employers and em- ployees In the building trades In New York city, an agreement which Is to re- main In effect during 1920, Indicates very plainly that labor costs for next year will remain at tho present level or higher. The gentleman who aatd ho caught forty or forty.flve trout In one day on the Koopue evidently bred qulto a gale. Ho may bava rpmo difficulty In trimming his aalla to atcer a clear courea In It. Those, however, who aro most emphatic. n, their criticism of this catch ehould, 1 ?e eve, havo etudlid the subject more care- fully beforo condemning him for a viola- tor of the lawa both irom a legal atand-poi- and from tho moral point of view. I. bellovo that a man can take tho al- leged number of trout In Ono day nnd \' nc\hor ,aw\ CT'alnly not the logal I. have seen many trout weighed In my time, ana I bellovo tho following rule for weight will hold good on mosfwaterei Native 6 Inch trout, 8 to a pound. Native 7 Inch trout, IS to 2 pounds. Native 8 Inch trout, 8 to 2 pounda. Native 9 Inch trout, 3 to a pound. Native 10 Inch trout, 2 to a pound. Native 12 Inch trout, pound each, Natlvo 11 Inch trout, 1 pound each. Trout larger than 14 Inchea vary In weight often as much as 3 ounces, accord- ing to the watery from which they are taken. 1 have caught a It Inch trout Which nelahcd 1 nminri an.! IX nuncps. Another which waa h Inch shorter weigncu lyi pounds. Hut for trout under 0 lnehea tho weight will vary llttlo nnd Is only noticeable when a lot of IS or 20 Is weighed. That ! for iruui spawnea ana grown In the etream. Trout raised In hatcheries may vary, I have no Itnowledirn of tha WAlrht nt these. This spring I saw 81 trout caught at uuBBicia wnicn weignea tt pounaa. And they were all elx Inchoa or more In length, Theae were weighed, four houro after be- ing caught. Thess wara nil anrrklari Irnnt and were caught In a amall, awlft running ileum, wen covered with treea. it has been my experience that trout ara heavier In alow, open watera than thoso from wooded, awlft watera. The gentlemen who crltlclae this catch of trout asaume, apparently, that 6 Inch trout weigh nearly n quarter pound each. If they have been so fortunate as to nsh waters In which are such trout I will deem It worth a box of good clgara to ba put wlao to these streams. Quartof pound trout look good to me. An to the moral end of It, how can a man be criticised for legally catching a big mefs of fish. If It Is reprehensible to do so then wo ehould by all means revise the law. Personally, I think there should by a limit of 25 a day, and a further limit of 16 pounds a day. 'h1!; J oulo not tako more than 28 6 to 10 Inch trnut In a .lav t t.n r .would hate to stop with three 3 poundcra. If i were out wun a party and the nh were to bo divided I would not hesitate to take enough eo that all had a fair meaa. After my experience the past season I would feel hurt If I were criticised for taking enough fish to give me one good feed. I didn't get them this past season, and my family are still hungry for trout. Unless tho trout In question ran larger than the (\atchoa I have seen coming from the Esopus I am willing to believe the gentleman\ might easily have tho number stated and ttlll be wall within the law. Again I say. If the law Is wrong, and I think It la, let us have It changed. \I am wrong aa to the rule for weight I will be obliged to any one who will prove me to be o. We aro all Inclined to ac- cept as facts something we have been told Is eo which wo have never taken the pains to verify. So come on, trout bugs, and If I have made a mistake, ahoot. Brooklyn, Nov. 10. SEARCH ME. The Lnre of the Sarf Ta. Troutlng. The other morning I read \Tamarack's\ aasurance that he still remembers that there ia euch a thing as a fly rod In the world and that he fully expecta to. use one In tho under I mean afterworld. For some time I have questioned the sanity of those Beachnute a number of good fly fishermen apparently ao obsessed with surf flailing that they had forsaken the running water for the breakers. Not that I begrudge thorn tho unques- tioned Pleasure of the realm of nnn\ and sunburn, but that any men who eisteu Detween ana lived during a ny existed between and lived during a fly the darling of all sport', aa they appear to have forgotten It, seemed Impossible. \Stillwater\ I remember how he choo that name, Jersey's Itinerant angler, wl was with us, always fishes the fast water, while \.\tlllwater\ and I favored the quiet runs. Tho Itinerant angler, Walter 'Sill (may his wrist grow mora powerful), I christened \White Water.\ A short nhllo afterward \Stillwater\ struck upon hla name and adopted It 'or better or worse. Well, old \Stillwater\ has gone bughouse along with tho rest of the nuts. As far as I cun see, \IVtlow Angler\ and I are the only two living exponents ot the ancient art left. Even tho Itinerant angler has taken up no I won't lay It In public but he surely has taken It up and many, many bass hae succumbed to him of late. Who 7 Me ntrrowmlnded 7 Never! I cast an aggre- gate of 3,567 '4 miles In the aurf before \Stillwater\ ever saw a aurf rod. No, I never caught a fish: but, aa \Tamarack\ says: It's not all of flehlng to catch fish, or words to that effect.
