A lucky tart and over confidence on' the part of Jockey Kummer, who rode Donnacona, enabled Fator to land Doming.ua uomo m front Fortune favored Dominique from- tne time he arrived at the barrier to the winning post He ran a fine race nnd Kbwed again that he is the one colt by Peter Quince that la courageous. But In erolte of this excellent showing- - Donna' con would have 'won if all thlnga were- - (equal at the start and In jockeysblp. 'The start played an Important part in the result The 'eflld was mado up of pominque, Donnacona, Damask, Con- stancy, H!o Choice, Homely, David Ha- rum and the last named on added starter. It was the first stake rant here at a tnlle for sund a big crowd made the trip to the historic old track'to witness the contest ftha racegoers' were all repaid for tho feuraey, aa the race was a spectacular fee, with a stirring finish.' Constancy was verv fractious at the fata and delayed the start. Constancy were too far be- hind to be considered. v ...Before half a mile had been raced tne contest had narrowed down to the two leaders. Just which one would win waa uncertain as both colts were strld' lng along with plenty of speed In rew verve. Dominique was conceding Don- nacona ten. pounds, but the son of Peter quince waa a well seasoned horse, while Donnacona had only raced three times during the year. The advantage of physical condition was 'therefore with .Dominique. There was practically no change In tne positions of Dominique and Donna' cona until well Into the stretch. Don Bacons, seemingly could catch Doml Biaue at any time, but Kummer re grained from making the move until well straightened out in the stretch. He was then In no hurry, but allowed the colt to move up on Dominique on bis own courase .and without ursine. This he did until he waa abreast of Dominique. Instead of running over juominique as Kummer expected Donna' cona \hung\ in h a stride. This check in the colt's speed decided the race. Fator roae desperately and managed to keep aromimque in rront,' to win by a nose. David narnm Is Third Homely held third place until well into tne stretch, whero David Harum be-gr- to movo up and at the finish he beat tier out by a length for third money. The remainder of the field Btraggled in. a Tne time of tho mile was run In 1:42, Which was rather slow considering that the, track was good. The pace was not fast and this helped Dominique. Ho Is colt that possesses a brilliant turn of peea tor nan a mile, with no serious contention the first half mile ,ho ran that distance In .49 2-- C and rIt fur longs in 1:15 5 no pace to spoak of na juiii me ining urn enabled him to last out the. mile. Bister Helena came from the rear at the head of the stretch and won the first race by nearly three lengths. She fairly ran over her opponents at the end. Jean Bullant, which recently gradu- ated from tho ranks of the maidens, was well up during the early part of the race and looked all over the winner till Sister Helene made her challenge. The victory proved a costly one for P. D. rVelr In SDtta of the fact that .hla flliv (rewarded his bets at slightly better odd's ef 10 to 1. Sister Helene, entered fd 9S00, waa claimed by Samuel Lewis, tho owner or jean iiuuant, lor $3,645. a The track was Just soft enough to beat Out the Way, favorite for the sec- ond race, and to assist Quietude, which races best- over a slow or 'dead track. Out the Way showed tho way until the turn for home. Grimalkin had- attended aim for the first half, mile and this took :the edge from his speed. By the time vie last furlong was reached Out the way was tired and unable to with' stand Quietude's rush at tho end. srA misfit lot of Jumpers took part In the steeplechase. The fact that the Horses were ridden by Jockeys who had never ridden a winner under the Na- tional Steeplechase and Hunt Associa- tion or Canadian racing associations mads the probable result an unusually Sard problem to solve. Dorcria won' by C' head, thanks to a well ridden race and good finish on the part of Cv Mer-Tle- r. Mergler saved ground throughout the two miles and then managed to get a very tired horse home first. Bob Red-fiel- d cloaed with a rush at the end, but .the rush was too late b'y the margin 'of six inches. New Haven bolted at the fourth Jump, Pastora lost her rider; at 'the third Jump, and Lewis Opper his Jockey, at the eleventh fence, f Ormonda and' Salvestra had a struggle from the start to the finish for tho fifth race, which was at a' mile and a six- teenth. T. Rowan permitted Ormonda to step right along, and she led Salve- stra by a neck down the back stretch and into the homo stretch. In the final furlong Rowan slioob liU whip In face. This caused Salvestra to 'aulk and Ormonda won. Vs.Ormonda's Victory was the first rift el sunshine for the backers of favorites. In the next race they made it a double when Polroma, well handled during tho arly stages of the mlje and a quarter, \came on' and. beat out J$hn I. Day. \ But the success of the favorites was short lived, for In the last race Warsaw a 20 to 1 shot, nosed out King John, which paid t to 1 for the place. v, Ansae raced In the first race In the Stme and Interest of O. W. Foreman. He had been claimed from Capt Ral parr out of the first race on Monday, .yoreman did not own him lomr. tnr at Parr claimed him back to-d- for jJJ.405. Animal Meeting in January Expected to See Rostef Beach 500 Mark. By INNIS BROWN, At least 60d members is the prospect which confronts the United States Golf Association when that august body holds Its annual meeting, probably some time In January. At the last meeting early this year, the roster showed 458 cuius, Including both active and associate mem bers. Since that time the list has been Increased to 465, and with new clubs springing up all over the country It is entirely probable that the E00 mark win be reached, when all applications for membership have been acted on. The list of associated clubs is about twice that of active members. But there is a strong possibility that a number of the associate members will become ac tive, thereby acquiring the right to vote In the deliberations of the aasocla tlon. It is probable that the matter of standardizing golf balls will como up, and the question Is of broad enough elg. nlflcance to warrant all of the prominent clubs of tho country In Qualifying for a vote on the question. The annual meeting will, as usual, take care of the election of officers for the en suing year. The committee on nomina tions has completed its work .and the slate as proposed will undoubtedly go through.' The list of nominations pro vides for the election of George II. Walker of St Louis to succeed. Frederick S. Wheeler, the present head of the or ganlzatlon. Howard P. Whitney, pres ent secretary. Is to become first vice- - president, and J. 7. Byers of Pittsburg, second nt W. D. vender pool of Newark, member of the Morris County Country Club, will succeed Whit' ney as secretary. Mortimer N. Buckner will continue as treasurer. Golfers Heading South. Within a few weeks now the ranks of resident golfers in the South will enjoy a strong boost from the Influx of North, ern enthusiasts. Practically without ex ceptlon every course in Florida and other resort areas Is planning for an extra busy season. From Ptnehurst on down through Florida and on to the Islands of the west Indies preparations are being made for tho migratory golfers. Practically all or the well known professionals are getting ready to head South. Oeorge Hoare of the Tedesco links in the Boston district has lately lined up a job with a San Juan course In Porto Itlco. Encroachment on property rights ad Jolng golf courses has overcome stub- born obstacles in many cases in the past, but It has remained for a public course in San Francisco to establish what appears as the limit A short time ago Herbert Flelshacker, a prom inent San Francisco banker, was named on the City Park Commission. An en thuslastio golfer himself, he was quick to listen to the plea of public links players for extension of the Lincoln Park course. The only direction in which the course could be extended lay In the direction of a plot ot ground that had long been In use as a cemetery, Commissioner Flelshacker was active In getting an appropriation of 47,500 with which to acquire this plot and tho links will now be extended.
