POLICE THWART VIOLENCE HERE BY COMMUNISTS Arrests Bare Anarchist riot to Force Clash With Authorities. RUTGERS SQUARE SCENE Women and Children Told to Keep Away 50,000 Secret Circulars. Plans for a mass ncetlnrr of Ilecla to have been held next Saturday in Rutgers squaro and at which vloleuca was to have met any attempt at Inter- ference were pet at naught by the police yesterday through tho seizure of a mass of anarchist literature, and the arrest of two men who are charged with printing and distributing It. The literature consists of more than StT.'OOO circulars bearing tho mark of the Communist Party of America and was seized when two secret printing establishments, one In Eldrldgo street and tho other In Fifth street, were raided. The circulars were of threo kinds. One announced tho proposed mass meeting; another called upon all genuine Socialists in this country to take pslrt in a revolution, and the third called upon them to boycott the coming eloctlons. Tho men arrested aro Maurice Nesslm of 170 Essex street and Benjamin Toback of 103 East Fourth street. The arrests and the seizure of propaganda were made by members of the Bomb Squad, headed by Detective Sergeant James j. ciegan. working i under the direction of Deputy Com- missioner \William J. Lahey, There was seized also a mailing list con- taining more than 10.000 names which are thought to be those of anarchists. The list contains names of men lo- cated In- - cities all over the United States and Commissioner Lahey re- tards it as the most valuable piece of paper which has come into his pos- session in many a day. Nesslm and Toback are being held on charges 0f criminal anarchy. They were wary when questioned after their arrest, but let slip certain bits of Infor- mation which caused the members of the raiding party to congratulate them- selves on having made the raid and ts before, the projected mass meeting next Saturday. Hatred Women and Children. One thing they gleaned was that those Invited to Rutgers square had been cau- tioned not to bring women or children with them. Another was' that during the meeting pickets were to watch its progress from the roofs of buildings fac- ing the square. The police said yester- day that they had no doubt but that \anarchist apples,\ or small hand bombs, would have been thrown from the roofs had the meeting taken place and the po- lice attempted to break it up. They con-rid- er that the warning against women and children being brought to the meet- ing was In anticipation of a clash be- tween the Reds and the police. The handbills of Invitation to the meeting stated that it would be held In celebration of the second anniversary of the Bolshevist revolution In Russia. The bills Invited \worklngmen and comrades\ to \come in thousands and strike on No- vember 8.\ The propagandist circulars inviting all good Socialists to take part In a. revolution fffrfi hpnrtllnrt M r'ViallAn, and explained that \now that we have a real revolutionary part- - a duty falls upon us action. Since the reign of the nusslan Government was ended at the hands of the Bolshevists, a commotion for revolutionary Socialism began to take place all over the world, and in America more than anywhere else, this \ommotlon took on an organized form. \Our programme Is as revolutionary is can be. We are working day and light to bring about a revolutionary pro- gramme In this land of ours, but we alone can not do the work. Remember, comrades, that our leaders do not want merely a verbal answer from you. They want action. They want you to under- stand that this Is not the moment to shrink. You must devote lots of your tlmo and energy to tne achievement of our purpose, which Is an establishment of a dictatorship of the proletariat.\ Chnllencre by \Left \VInsr.\ The \challenge like all the other lit- erature celzed, bears the imprint of the Communist party of America, which do scribes Itself as the left wing of the So- cialist party and which broke away from tho mild or orderly Socialists laet August when It tried to get them to se Its extreme notions and could not. The circulars seised yesterday, asking all Communist party members to unite In a boycott of the polls on election day, reveal perhaps that tho leaders of the \left wing\ havo not tho enthusiastic following which they proclaim them- selves as having, for It is a palpable at- tempt to shrink the voto percentages of regular Socialist candidates by inducing Socialist voters not to Vote at all. It contains these among other arguments: \Can you vote for Meyer London, pro-w- patriot? Or Zabel, Milwaukee's So- cialist District Attorney, who railroaded Socialists to Jail? Or the Socialist alder- men who voted Liberty bonds nnd vic- tory arches? These Aldermen havo all been renominated by their party. \Workers do not be deceived by the miserable slogans of the deceivers of the proletariat. Do you expect any- thing of Socialist party Job holders nnd their miserable vote catching campnlgns? Cheap rent, cheap milk, cheap fares, cheap fairy tales and cheap promises-- can the Job seekers fulfil them? \Workers the United States seems to bo on the verge of a revolutionary crisis, and the workers through their maas strikes are challenging the capitalistic State. The Communist party task Is to unify these strikes, aiming at tho very Pmver of the capitalistic State Itself. Out ot these mass industrial struggles must Issue the means nnd the Inspiration for tbe conquest of power by the workers. Boycott the elections.\ \ PLOT-AfiAEN- ST I. R. T.
