PRICES ADVANCE IN COTTON MARKET Great Strength Is Dovolopod mid Maximum Gain Is 7.50 a Bale. Tho cotton market developed yester day great strength and prices were bid forward for a maximum advance of a bale In one oxf two options. Dull lh factors wero dominant at all times and shorts felt tholr weight severely, being compelled to rush to oover right at the start, when prices sold a net cent a pound up from Saturday's close. Bull- ish news was about divided between two (actors one, the settlement of the Eng- lish railroad strike; and the, other tho adverse weather map. Reflecting the betterment ln( labor circles, Liverpool cables came much better than due; In- stead of 44 to 49 points lower they started 10 to 20 higher. Over Sunday heavy rains fell In many sections of the South and yesterday's map was rather unfavorable, with pre- cipitation of .28 at Little nock, .IS at Galveston and Knoxvllle, .54 at Meridian, .64 at New Orleans and San Antonio, ..94 at Vlcksbtirg. 1.02 at Nashville and 1.01 at Memphis. There was lighter rainfall elsewhere with only the lowor Atlantic section showing clearness. Shorts were further disturbed soon by Indications of ' lower temperatures. Among the. other factors In favor of the upturn crowd was the lifting of tho ban on shipments to Great Britain, more reassuring news from Vashlngton, steady tone to foreign exchange and general belief that the Improvement In stocks meant a betterment In the coun- try's general condition. The renewal cf activity In many steel mills also re- ceived some attention from the floor crowd. First prices were up some 85 to 100 points on the active list, with business brisk. October opened at SI. 40, at 21.90, January st 21.55, March at 21.90 and May at 21.95. Fol- lowing the call there waa a short spell of Irregularity, during which mixed business was very much In evidence. The near months slipped a bit, but the genera) tone remained one of strength. Shorts were among the beat buyers, many of them having taken that posi- tion on' Friday and Saturday when things looked rather gloomy Spinners also were reported calling, and brokers connected with Liverpool interests acted mostly on both sides of the market There waa little If any slackening In demand as business progressed and slight reactions were always followed by recoveries. Tho afternoon' saw buy- ing at It best ebb wltn all positions advanolng to new highs for the day. Many shorts, who had clung to their position, stubbornly displayed uneasi- ness, and the majority of traders be- lieved that any broader advance would hrlng'the remainder of them to cover. Official forecasts for frosts In parts of the Western belt did not make the bear elements feej any easier. There was some nervousness near the ending, but little decided pressure against the mar- ket that could not be readily taken In. Final prices were not far from the best of the day, 120 to 132 points up in an actively strong market. Range of priors Satur- - Onen. Hlrh. Low. Close, day.
