CORN IS EASIER IN INACTIVE DEALING Feeling Is Bearish and Influ- enced by TJnsottlomont in Outside- - World. HOGS FALL FIFTY POINTS Weakness Affects Pork Most, but Lnrd and Grains Hold Despite-Drop- . Speculative buylns held up the distant corn months yesterday, when Septcm-he- r. the cash month, vraa selling oft. Diccmbcr' nnd May showed eomo re- cessions, but nhvays recovered. On the other hand September slipped S cents from I'- - high level of the day nt the close, due to heavy liquidation by those who wanted to dispose o their con- tracts before the delivery passed oft tho board. The trade was decidedly bear-tu- b. nnd perhaps one of the reason for tho market's not declining when news was so encouraging to shorts was that sentiment leaped toward selling. No one at this time, when everyone Is cry- ing for lower prices for foodstuffs and necessities, cares to be a bull. It Is deemed unpatriotic. Furthermore no argument for extended advance at this time can be found. There may\ be occn-tlon- al rallies, but options will 'tend lower rather than higher. No reduction In the crop Is expected In tho Government report which will be Issued this month. Tho undertone was easier with the close off '4 cent to 4 cents. The rallies during the day were due to announcement that war tune prohibi- tion had been lifted and to reports of heavy rains and short covering. An- nouncement of lifting war's prohibition ban, however, proved Idle rumor, no-por- ts of heavy rains were true and, se movement will be hindered, pro- duced a small amount of buying and covering orders. Tho weakness In hogs was felt mostly In pork, lard and grains holding In splto of a drop of CO to 75 points. Oats exhibited a tendency to follow corn closely and displayed nn easier un- dertone. Their fluctuations, as were those of corn,- - were narrow and trade In them was confined to professionals. Reports of another sale of 200,000 \bushels for export was not confirmed. An Insider, while hesitating to discredit tho story, claimed that tho difference, of eight cents between London and Amer- ican prices was too great. Very little trading for European countries has been clone In oats prior to the order which prohibited shipping to England and now that such an order Jias been issued they cannot be expected to increase. Provi- sions wcro easier,, lard alone holding up. Tho Btrength In lard was due prin- cipally to buying by packers, who see a need of lard In Europe when a butter famine threatens some of Its countiles. January pork was oft ft a barrel. MARKET TONE IS NEliVOUS Liverpool Conditions Improve and Later Dealings Show Itonowcd Strength. The market on tho Cotton Exchange vtsls yeaterday a good deal quieter, a small amount of steady, scattered buy ing; sending prices higher. All. In all there wns considerable evening up beforo bureau report, many cover ing or shortening commitments In fear of the unexpected. Although price move- ments were restricted to a narrow range, the tone displayed was one of nervous- ness, and frequent dips or small bulges were tho order, Generally speaking. Market factors were not much changed. Hears still emphasized unsettlement In labor circles here and nbroad, and also tho continued Improvement In Southern weather. They commented also on further weakness In foreign ex- change. Bulls found the major part of thelt ammunition In the private crop reports and the fact that the stronger tone In securities was a reflection of a better- ment somewhere In Industrial circles. Thoso private estimates ranged yester- day from 62.1 per cent of normal, issued by tho Norman Mayer Company, to 63 of A. Norden. There was also the report of tho New Orleans Times-PtcajHtt- e, making It 63.4, and one of the American Cotton Association placing lt at E2.7. Now that all private estimates have ap peared, te tuturo trena ot prices win In great part on the official census bureau figures. In Liverpool there wns a much better market, cables coming considerably bet-te- r than duo, and that market showing strength In later dealings. That Im- provement In overseas exchange, most people believed, was duo solely to more favorable local Industrial conditions. Spots there were In only limited demand nt an advanco of 60 points. Only unim- portant moisture was recorded yesterday on the weather map, .01 at San Antonio and ,02 at Jacksonville. First prices hero were up 18 to 84 points on the active list, business being fairly animated on the call, but soon turning very, dull, remaining so except for a few Intermittent periods through the session. The highest points of the day saw the general list 30 to 46 points above the finals of Monday, while the lowest In some cases was dangerously near the previous closing levels. The South was again among the sellers. Brokers operating for Liverpool Inter- ests traded both ways. Local specula- tive people did little except In an Idle, trading way. Tho lato market was more Irregular and pressure was heavier as the close, which was steady at a net rise ot 10 to 25 points, with spots also some- what up, approached. Range of prices Mon-Ope- n.
