Aa there is no special demand for sold abroad \at the moment, and Ji coin mrallabl for thlrment if hardly up to the standard at t5 weight. It la Terr doubt- ful tf b large quantity Is shipped on Satur- day. Forelsn housos. as a rule, are reluctant to send sold out of tho country of the peculiar popular sontlracnt eon n slight loss of tlio yellow inotril. In the circumstances the uneasinoss that the possibility of exports of spoUo has created uproars to bo duolarcelyto Ignorance In theilrstplnco, nspot fortli iiiTiichu.vtlils mornlnc. this country's stock of cold has In. cronstl nearly 410 millions of dollars dtirlnc the Inst thirteen years, which Is more thnti tlio total production of tlio Unltod Htntos ilurlnc thntporlod. Within tlio snmo time tlio total nmount of monoy In tlio country has lncronsod from one billion dollars to more thnn two billions, and of tho incionce :iO V cent. Is in cold. As to tho relationship botttcon bller and gold, especially in this country, it must be gradually becoming plain to erory one that Kurope is more dooply-disturbe- d nbout the mattor than tho Unltod Ktntos has any reason to be. Mr. ltothschlld's propo- sition to tho Driissols conferonco Indicates that England, on account ot Its ast Invest- ments in Kast Indian securities fears that tho United Stntos may repeal its tatust legislation nnd thus doprlo tlioslloi-niniki- l of whntbomo people arc pleased to call \artlil-cla- l support.\ Thoso who usothattorm ni-pe- to boliove that tho bhormnn act of 18!H) was passod tor tho purposo of sustaining tho price ot silver and not In rosponso to a de- mand for a Inrgor quantity of circulating medium. Ot course, tlio silver producers wanted some such legislation, but tlioy could not havo obtained it had not a large propoi-tlo- n of the pooplo demandod it The prosont talk oi sustnlnlng the silver market and tho suggestion to do so comes from Kngland, which is beginning to foel tho effect ot the shrinkage in value of its Intorosts in India. This being tho case, agitation In thin country for a repeal of tho Sherman law would naturally increase anxiety in England to do something for silver. It Is not to bo expectod that Kurope can absorb ns much silver as this country, since its popula- tion and business is not growing as rapidly. Besides, It already has in actual use n very large quantity ot tho motul. Franco alone, it is estimated, has J700.000.000 ot silver, and the Latin Union, of which It is a meinbor, over $1,000,000,000. A point that has not yet boon brought out in connection with Mr. ltoth- schlld's proposition that European na- tions commit themsohes to the pur- chase ot 5,000,000 of silver nnnually. Is that auch action carries with It mora than an assumption that none of the nations will attempt to dispose of thesIUerit is now using. It any such etoD as Mr. ltoth-schll- il proposes, or. In fact. If any action whatever faorable to silver is taken In conse- quence of the conference. It will be moro diff- icult for Europo to retreat than at present. As to the possibility of a change in the pres- ent ratio botwoon silverand gold. It should not bo ovorlookodthatan Increase to 20 to 1 would mean a depreciation ot about 33 por cent in the billion ot silver usod by tho Latin Union, to say nothing of that usod by other European countries. Many of tho com- ments that havo beon mado upon tho Brussols Conference soem to bo mado by thoso who hae forgotten or Ignore tho terms of the request of tho United States for that Con- feronco. It was called to consider \tho ad- visability of extending the use of sIKor as money,\ and not as many people soem to suppose, to serve notice upon European na- tions of the Intention ot this Government to repeal the Sherman act of 1800. In somequartors the precarious condition of Mr. Gould's health seoma to give qultons much anxiety as the monetary situation. Attempts to disguise the fact that Mr. Gould is seriously sick appear to have been abandoned, and this compels Wall street to consider whether its business or that of the country Is so largely dependent upon one man that his re- moval should be regarded as a catastrophe. The securities with which ho has beenlidn-tifle- d have not. according to trust- worthy evldenoe, enjoyed especial sup- port from him In the market for a long ttmo past Nor Is it reasonable to suppose that in his present extremity he or thoso rep- resenting him are Intent upon converting any part ot them Into cash. The publlo undoubt- edly doos with them as it pleases, and will probably enjoy that prh liege for some tlmo to come. Of the Industrial stocks. Distilling and Cat- tlo Feeding.
