Ticktti good enr on gptck trtk NEWJEJBEYCENTttfl Indicated in Enormous Freight Car Shortage. Such new Influences as wero brought to bear on the stock market In two hour session were mostly favorable, but It still seemed to be the mood of tho speculative element to disregard good news or to Judgo that it had been discounted. Indices of the upward trend of busi- ness of the country wers found In tho announcement by the American Hall- way Association that at present hcre exists a shortage of 179,239 freight cars, the largest In the history of tho country; In figures on bank clearings throughout the country In October, which were 14. per cent, greater than In September, and the largest for any month since December, 1920; In re- ports of commercial agencies which told of a mounting volume of business In all branches of Industry, while, In addition, there were additional an- nouncements of stock dividends, the notable instance y being the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Company of Wilmington, which announces Its In- tention of jrivinir tn uhnrrhnMoro 0 new share of stock for each two shares now held. These fresh factors were known to the financial community before the opening of business, yet Initial quota tions carried tho decline In progress at the close yestrday down to the extent of good-size- d fractions and In some cases to beyond a point. While It is true that much and probably tho bulk of the selling was of professional origin, and for short account, there was at the same time considerable selling In the nature of liquidation. And It was further evident that public buying was not attracted by the new low quotations being recorded. Equipment Btocks went down as easily as shares In other groiips, al- though these companies have the largest amount of business booked in several years and their outlook could hardly bo more favorable. Tho argu- ment used against steel sharps wa that with existing wage scales and other costs tho United States Steil &Corporation Is unable to make n natisfactory margin of profit on fin- ished products, while tho margin of profit on Independent steel companies Is practically negligible. Studebaker went down well beyond a point to n new low for the current setback and other motors showed proportionate declines. In later trading the market showed an Improved tone but at no time was it able to show a rally of consequence and In many instances Una! prices wero tho lowest of tho day with losses extending from two to four points In speculative industrials.
