Raider Football By Sue Vito 1 have some information on how our other teams are doing in the League stand- ings. The 9 year olds are in 7th place, the 10 year olds are in I Ith place, both hav- ing records of 0-4, (but a couple of tight games in there). The 11 year olds are in 9th place with 1-3, and the 12 year olds are in 6th place with a 2-2. These standings are as 10/11. The scores for the week of 10/11 are as follows, 9 «& 10 year olds had a loss, and so did the 11 «& 12 year olds. (Bad week for the Raiders!!) The week of Oct. 18th was •a little better. The 9 & 10 year olds lost, but the 11 & 12 year olds were winners. And, finally, last week, 10/25 we only had one Members of the East Rockaway Fire Department prepare for Smoke Drill while Village Trustee and Ex-Chief George Perry looks on. Honorary Chief CHIEF SHELTON, \Jigs\ Holmes 1st Asst. Chief Tom Smith, 2nd Asst. Chief Bill Gibson. winner, or 11 year olds beat Farmingdale 7-6. 1 also have an article from the Peanuts coach, incorpo- rating 4 games into this column. Oct. 4: The Peanuts played a good game, scoring their 1st TD of the season. The score came on a 6 yd. run by Michael Braguglia, with Chris Williams scoring the PAT. Oct. 11: In the pouring rain, the Peanuts played a good game, but lost to a bigger Farmingdale team. Michael Braguglia led the offense with 45 yds. rushing. Peter Sanganetti. Danny Vacchio and Michael Bran- guglia played an excellent defensive game, and Robert Blaum made a big intercep- tion. At a Department Meet- ing, is Chief Chris Shelton presented Harold \Jigs\ Holmes with a plaque com- memorating his 50 years. Oct. 18: The entire Pea- nuts team played a great game, considering they were playing an undefeated, much bigger and more expe- rienced team. Danny Vac- chio played outstanding defense. Oct. 25: The Peanuts played another good game, improving all the time. The defense played a strong game led by Danny Vocchio and Rober Blaum. The offense was led by Michael Braguglia with 60 yds. rush- ing. Danny Vocchio ran 8 yds. for the Peanuts TD!! The Midgets played home last Sunday, hosting the Val- ley Stream Hornets. The Raiders played a tough game against the Green Hornets, but they could not contain them. The score was 18-6, but they only lost by one TD. The Hornets kick the PAT, so it counts as 2 points. The only TD was scored by Da mien Del Pe//o, on a 53 yd. run. At the end of the game, Jarett Vito had a 65 yd. TD called back on a penalty, and we never got close again. On the defense we had some good plays, keeping the Hornets from scoring even more points. Damdien Del Pe//o intercepted one of With the Fire Department. The members of the ERFD elected \Jigs\ an Honorary Chief of the Department. their pases and ran it back 20 yds., and Brandon Hickam, recovered one of their fum- bles. The Raiders are look- ing forward to their last game this week against Mer- rick. It is truly their last game. Unless by some miracle that we have a senior team next year, these boys, some who have been together for 5 years will not be playing together again. They will beaway at Mer- rick, game time 12:30 PM. The Peanuts will be told this week whether they have a game or not. The Pee Wees will beaway at Baldwin. The JVs will be home, hosting Bellmore. We would also like to thank Frank Honerkamp for his great announcing and help with the raffle drawing. We would also like to thank all the mothers who collected the chance books for each team, you did a great job. by An Exhausted Shopper! It was 6:30 a.m. on Satur- day, October 25th, when 34 women and two children were waiting at the ERHS oval for the bus to take them to Reading Pennsylvania for a day of shopping at Vanity Fair. They should have know.n there were in for trouble when the bus arrived at 6:45 a.m., and the bus driver said he was late because he \couldn't find Ocean Avenue.\ The trip there was slow, but otherwise uneventful. Since the driver got lost at least twice on the way, the anxious shoppers chose to go directly to VF without stopping for coffee. It was just as well, because the thoughtful Sue Tayo (ERHS PTA Co-President) had provided the shoppers with donuts and bagels to tide them over until lunch. Finally at 11:00 a.m., the bus arrived at the VF parking lot, and off everybody went, lists and tnoney in hand. At the agreed-upon 5 p.m., everyone was back in the bus with aching feet, bulging packages, and sto- ries of long lines for check- ing out everywhere they went. As the bus left the parking lot, it sounded a lit- tle sick, as it choked, spitted, and jerked down the high- way. in the direction of home. At 5:25 p.m., the driver pulled over, and the. bus stopped dead. This was[ I the beginning of the end. Soon afterward it was dis- covered that this same bus had broken down the pre- vious weekend on a trip to Atlantic City, where its pas- sengers were stranded for 22 hours! Why, then everyone wondered, was this bus permitted to go out again this weekend? A little while later, a kind- hearted truck driver pulled over to see if he could help. He couldn't but offered to go ahead and call for the local police. Then a \cruis- ing officer\ came by and radioed to the local police department for help. When the officers in authority arrived, it was decided that they would transport the stranded females, in groups of four, via police car, to another local mall that would be open until 9 p.m. By this time it was 6 p.m., and a call was put in to the InterCounty Motor Coach Corp., to advise them that their bus was out of commis- sion. They said they would send a repairperson to see^if it could be fixed, and if not, they would send a \rescue bus\ to pick everyone up. Upon arriving at the mall in police cars, all the women headed immediately for the phones, to let their families know they would be \a little late\ getting home. Fortu- nately, because of the long lines at VF, many of the women still had money left to spend, and so they did until the MOM mall closed at 9 p.m. At that time they were told to go into the lobby of the hotel that is connected to the mall. The Wilson World hotel was lovely indeed, and with the bar, pool, and two whirl- pools right in the lobby, eve- ryone just relaxed and waited. The October meeting of The Lynbrook Democratic Club enabled ail who attended the opportunity to meet, listen to and question many of the candidates run- ning for local office. Guests at the meeting were members of the Valley Stream, Rockville Centre and Baldwin Democratic Clubs. The next scheduled event hosted by The Lynbrook Democratic Club is the 5th Annual Holiday Auction, featuring \Antiques\ and \Newtiques.\ The date is Sunday, November 15th from I pm-4pm at the Amer- ican Legion Hall, Union Avenue, Lynbrook. All are welcome, refreshments available. Sue Tayo and some other immediately headed for the phones to check with Inter- County to see about the \rescue bus.\ They were told that a repairman was sent, and that the bus should be there shortly. However, when it arrived, the ill-fated #604 had only been tempor- arily repaired, and everyone refused to board the bus, in .the event it might break down again. They told InterCounty we would wait for a new bus. Hours passed, and to make the time go by faster, the women had a few drinks from the bar, rode the see- through elevators, and finally, resorted to taking off shoes and socks and soaking their feet in one of whirl- pools. The hotel personnel were all very accommodat- ing to allow these stranded women to remain in their lobby for those many hours. Some women even dozed off, in anticipation of the long night ahead. Finally, at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the new bus arrived. Everyone imme- diately awoke with a sudden burst of energy, and out hey went to off-load their pack- ages from bus #604 and onto bus #881. The ride home was very quiet. Everyone was totally exhausted. When the bus arrived at the ERHS oval at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, everyone on the bus grunted a \goo d night\ to the driver and to 'their co-riders, and disap- peared in various directions. Surely everyone was think- ing to themselves, \I never thought I'd be so glad to be back in East Rockaway.\ It was a trip to remember, to say the least.
