The Observer is not .-esponsible for any statements made in a **Lctter to the Editor.\ Dear Mr. Hambel, Re, your column \Hable Es English\ These people can't wait to get into the U.S.A. If they are s o anxious to be here and live here and partake of our many opportunities why then don't they learn how to be Americans - if they want to speak their native lan- guage, fine! But don't expect us t o change - they are in our country, not we in theirs! My parents came from Italy - they learned how to read, write and speak english and were proud to be here. I'm glad, Mr. Hambel, that you are speaking out for preserving our \American Heritage\ God bless you. Margaret Stallone 4 Morton Ave. E. Rockaway N.Y. Dear John, Salutations my friend, and greetings from down under (Mason-Dixon Line, that is). Sweater weather has not yet reached Fort Lauderdale, though it rarely does. The other day, I was sitting in my favorite beachside watering hole, slurping shellfish from the raw bar, drinking an ice cold Corona beer (no lime, please), pondering the latest threat of cold and flu season in the contin- enul northeast (which if I remember correctly. stems from late Sep- tember til early April), and further straining my eyes on Europe's newest bikini styles, when 1 read your editorial \Draw Pardner!\ from the October 14 issue of my other hometown news- paper. Some good points were raised, but the alarm is n o longer needed. News services across the nation heralded truth in Flori- da's official slogan, \The Rules Are Different Here\ I got the impres- sion the scandal sheets of New York (you know the ones who 'correctly' claimed the recent Stock Market 'crash' as a pan- demic financial calamity- -the Daily News and Post for instance) were going to Cry out for like minded patriots to put down the rebels of the New Confe- deracy, while singing the \Battle Hymn of the Republic.\ in a state that continues to unofficially celebrate the birthday of Jefferson Davis, common sense finally prevailed. An explanation is offered: Ever since reactionar- ies took over control of the National Rifle Asso- ciation, they have been on a divine mission to lobby, every state house on respective gun control laws. In Florida, they were successful in two regards ~ a concealed weapons law, requiring (Continued on Page 4) IN MEMORIUM Dr. William K. Louis Former Superintendent East Rockaway Schools Editorials Have Faith In Our Country and Economy By Hank Bialick The budget and trade deficits have finally come to haunt the prosperity of our United States. They have been there for years. It was something we knew was there but didn't want to talk about it or to address it. If you recall, countries like Japan, West Germany, and even France, have for years warned us that our deficits would eventually lead to financial difficulties. It has! The lack of faith in our financial markets has caused for- eign investors to pull their funds out of the stock market, causing the drop that has most of us dazed. The President and the Congress must act now to restore the faith in our Amer- ican economy. The talk is about a 23 billion dollar reduction in the 1988 budget. It will take at least 80 to 90 billion dollars of cutting to restore our financial well-being. As painful as taxes are, they are necessary to pay for our past sins. Nobody wants to pay higher taxes, but higher taxes will cut consu- mer spending and, unfortunately, this may be a necessary step for recovery. (Continued on Page 4) Hold A Fair Hearing! By John Hambel Not content with the public spectacle per- formed on the world stage for the past few months, the wolves are on the prowl again. President Reagan has nominated yet another eminent legal mind to a seat on the Supreme Court. Judge Douglas Ginsberg of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia is a former professor at Harvard Law School, and unlike the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Joseph Biden, he did well in law school. He clerked for a Judge on the DC Circuit, and then clerked for Thurgood Marshall on the Suprenne Court. As of this time, there is no indication that he either lied about his grades or plagerized law review articles. Within minutes of the announcement, lib- eral activists were quick to state their case. Can you imagine ~ President Reagan had the nerve to nominate yet another conservative. What did they think he would do, bow to those who defiled and degraded Judge Bork? Did they think that the President would now make things easy tor them and nommate someone who would carry on the liberal agenda? And then comes my favorite hypocrite- Senator Edward Kennedy. The \Duke of Chappaquiddick\ immediately went to the Senate floor and labelled Judge Ginsberg \an ideological clone of Judge Bork.\ Never mind (Continued on Page 4) HANK BIALICK—PUBUSHER John Hambtl - Editor Toni Santillo - Controller Gloria Paras - Billing Cacolia Allman - Circulation Managar Irving WaMman - Circulation Graca Stain - Account Eiacutiva Joan Schalk - Account Exacutiwe Christine M.
