I his new program asks citizens to call a new US Customs drug hotline. I- SOO-Bli-Al.ERI. to report drug sales and 'drug smug- gling. The new hotline, stalled by lederal em- ployees. will refer the infor- mation and complaints to lederal agents to investigate, rhe Customs Service is presently hiring additional staff to operate the hotline 24 hours a day. President Reagan has stated. \ I'he time has come for each and c\ery one of us to make a personal and moral commitment tt) actively oppose the use of ille- gal drugs in all forms and in all places. We must remoxe all traces of illegal drugs from our nation.\ This new hotline is one way that citi- zens can join w ith the Presi- dent to help combat drug sales and drug abuse in our country. The mayor and trustees of the Village of Lynbrook and the Good Government Party ask all our residents to join America's crusade against drugs. The N a s s u County Board of Supervisors has unanimously adopted a local law that licenses all school bus operators doing business in Nas.sau County, it was announced by Hemp- stead Town Presiding Supervisor Joseph N. Mon- delloand North Hempstead Supervisor J o h n B. Kiernan. County Executive Tho- mas S. Gulotta signed the' legislation into law at a ceremony immediately fol- lowing the Monday. Sep- tember 2«. 1987. meeting of the Board of Supervisors. The new local law goes into effect October 15. 1987. \I am delighted to sign this historic legislation.- \stated County Executive (julotta, \Through the dedi- cation and hard work of the members of the Board of Supervisors and the Task Force on School Bus Safety, we now have a law which will ensure the safety of our children who commute to school each day.\ The new local law requires all school bus com- panies to obtain a license from the Nassau County Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, who will be empo- wered to examine the quali- fications and fitness of all applicants, obtain informa- tion from any law enforce- ment agency regarding the criminal history of any owner or employee of a school bus company, includ- ing drivers and matrons, conduct physical inspec- tions of all buses operating in the County, and levy fines for violating any provision of the new law. \This legislation proves that when concerned citi- zens and local officials work together, problems can be resolved,\ stated Supervisor Kiernan, who as Chairman of the Board's Tiansporta- tion Committee spear- headed the licensing effort. \1 believe that the local law adopted today will go a long way towards providing an extra measure of safety to those relying on transporta- tion to and from school each day.\ Highlights of the new local law are as follows: * All school bus operators doing business in Nassau County must receive u license from the Department of Consumer Affairs, and provide the Commissioner with the names of the owners of the company, the number of vehicles to be operated by the applicant and a de.scription of each vehicle, including the make, model, year of manufacture. New York .State registration number, vehicle identifica- tion number, and school bus number, as well as certifi- cates of insurance evidenc- ing public liability and property damage coverage. * Each \ehicle used to transport children to school must display a decal proving that it has been licensed by the Countv. * A fee' of $500 shall be paid to obtain a license, and there will be an additional fee of SIO per decal. A school district which owns, icjises. or operates its t^wn buses will be exempted from this pro\ision. * The Department of Consumer Affairs and the Nassau County Police Department are empowered to conduct physical inspec- tions of all school buses operating in Nassau County. Inspections will be made to determine proper documentation of the driver, ensure correct seat belt installation and usage, and monitor the functioning of horns, brakes, lights, radios, and other accessories essential to safe driving. * In addition to inspec- tions conducted by the County, all vehicles must be Rocklyn Cemetery Vandalized Tombstones were over- turned, causing an estimate damage of $5,000 at the Rocklyn Cemetery in Lyn- brook last week. Police stated that the vandals entered the Ceme- tery, located at Ocean Avenue and Merrick Road, between the hours of 4 pm Tuesday, September 29 and 7 am Wednesday, Sep- tember 30. Beer bottles were left scattered over the grounds, and at least 50 stones were overturned, and many of them were scratched and chipped. Cemetery workers inform- ed Fifth Squad Detective Robert Ballard that another 80 stones had been over- turned in previous weeks. inspected by New York State Department of Trans- port ion certified inspectors at inter\als not exceeding six (6) months. • Violations discovered at inspection will result in the issuance of appearance tickets and are punishable by fines not exceeding $250 for the first offense and $1,000 for each additional violation. Any bus company that operates without a license or with a suspended or revoked license shall be guilty of a Class A Misdemeanor. The Board of Supervisors held hearings earlier this year and appointed a Task Force to assist the Board in developing legislation to monitor the safety of school bus vehicles.
