American Legion Auxiliary In a final attempt to avoid continuing the one percent Nassau County sales tax increase when it expires at the end of the year, I met with the county's sales tax advisory committee last week. It was with great reluc- tance last year that I had agreed to support the coun- ty's request to raise its sales tax from IVM to 8'4%. At that time 1 had asked for the establishment of a citizen's advisory committee to con- sider whether the tax should be extended and that an out- side independent audit of the county's records be made. These two requests were met. I also pointed out that last year Cpunty Execu- tive Purcell had publicly said he would not \raise real estate taxes\ in 1984 because the sales tax increase \would fully cover any deficit.\ Relying on this commit- ment, the Long Island dele- gation in the State Legisla- ture supported the temporary increase. But the commitment was not kept. Contrary to Mr. Purcell's pledge to trim the payroll, no layoffs took place in the 1983 budget Wishing All Residents of East Rockaway and Lynbrook eutd GENE WEISBEIN COUNCILMAN TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD HIBERNIANS APPOINTED TO RECREATION COMMISSION. There were no cuts in departmen- tal expenditures as pledged nor was any \cap\ placed on county agencies' spending. And recent newspaper reports indicate that Nas- sau's part-time employees are getting full time medical and other benefits. Moody's, anjnvestor ser- vice which rates municipali- ties, in November 1983 issued an alarming report about Nassau. It said: \County expenses increased at double-digit levels. This raises uncertainty about the ability of the county to con- trol expenditures.\ It also pointed out that the county was still reporting a budget gap although it had antici- pated that the new sales tax funds would wipe out the deficit. Finally, ll posed a few questions to the sales tax advisory committee. I wanted to know why Nassau County needs a tax hike for 1985 that will yield $93 mil- lion when it claims a $23 mil- ion deficit. 1 also wanted to Visit of Taoiseach \ In the course of his address to leaders of the Irish American commun- ity, Irish Prime Minister, Dr. Garret FitzGerald, covered the following topics: Practical Ways for Irish-Americans to Help: \You also have a role in helping in many very prac- tical ways. There are a number of organizations at home and in the United States which are dedicated to purposes that we whole- heartedly endorse and would wish you to support. These organizations include, for example - The Glencree Centre for Reconciliation; The Cor- rymeela Community; Ire- land Cooperation North; The Interchurch Emer- gency Fund for Ireland; The American Irish Foun- dation; The Ireland Fund and The Irish American Cultural Institute. know what actions Nassau County has taken to meet the criticisms raised in Moody's report and what it has done to reduce the size of its deficit before extend- ing the sales tax increas?. The county has yet to show its good faith to the public and the sales tax panel. Berman Sponsors Consumer Forum State Senator Carol Ber- man (9th S.D.) has urged all residents of her Senatorial district who have problems or questions related to con- sumer issues to attend a \Consumer Forum\ which she is sponsoring on Thurs- day evening, April 26, at 8 pm. the Forum will be held at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center, 111 North Oceanside Road, RVC. Berman, a member of the Senate Consumer Protec- tion committee, said she has arranged for representatives of the State Consumer Pro- tection Board, the Public Service Commission, the Insurance Department, and the Attorney-General's Office to appear at the Forum. She said that any and all questions that local residents have about the costs of merchandise and food, utility rates, insurance policies, auto and home repairs, and other items that affect the consumer, will be answered at the Forum. \Consumers are having great difficulty in maintain- ing a decent standard of liv- ing in this era of escalating costs and prices and the advice they can obtain with- out charge from experts in the field will help them in their natural desire to obtain good value in the market place at the lowest possible cost,\ Senator Berman commented.
