The Observer is not responsible^ for any statements made in a \Letter to the Editor.\ Dear John, We are very happy to enclose another year's sub- scription to the East Rock- away Observer. Being a member of the East Rock- away Fire Department, Past President of E.R. Kiwanis Club, Republican Club, & retired Supt. of Construction for E.R., we enjoy keeping up to date on the affairs of E.R, and vicinity. Very truly yours, C.O. Varney To the Editor: I hope that everyone will come out and sup- port the May 15th Bond Referendum. The pro- posed repairs will provide sound, safe schools in which our children will receive a good, basic education. Last December, the voters of the East Rock- away School District decided to keep our exist- ing school buildings. Now let's vote to reno- vate, and thus preserve our investment. The pas- sage of the proposed bond issue will extend the life of our buildings for years to come, and give us the added benefits of reduced maintenance and energy costs. Given that the May 15th Renovation Bond Referendum passes, let us voice our concern to all school officials that a comprehensive maiiMe- nance program must be developed and carried out. Renovation will pre- serve our present invest- ment, proper mainte- nance will insure our future. Yours truly, Jess R. If they looked out their windows at high tide, they saw the upstanding merchants of our community, Kiwanians all, wading through the Hooded streets to their cars, shoes held high and pants rolled to the knees. It seems their meeting at the Ship's Inn was cut short because no one remembered to bring a raft. And was that water cold... Editorial Thanks, Barry by John Hambel It was with great sadness that 1 learned of East Rockaway Board of Education member Barry Akrongpld's decision to resign from his position. His absence represents a void that will be difficult for anyone to adequately fill. Since his election to the Board in 1982, Mr. Akrongold has proven himself to be one of the most dedicated and professional people with whom 1 have had the pleasure to deal. At all times his concern for the children of this dis- trict has been clearly displayed; yet he has never forgotten to balance all segments of the community he so ably represented. Mr. Akrongold knew that the best interests of our children and our schools were served when the majority of taxpayers were in substantial agreement; he served as the spokesman for both young adult with children in school as well as senior citizen with no offspring utiliz- ing the services provided by School District 19. Mr. Akrongold was responsive to the needs of the community. Although originally a sup- porter of the last bond issue, he responded to his constituent's wishes when he believed it to be apparent that the measure did not have the substantial support of the community. For this act he was roundly criticized by some, applauded by others. One may only offer praise to such a person who is willing to bear the ire of many in order to stand up for what he believes is right. Regardless of one's feel- ings for Mr. Akrongold's position, he can only be congratulated.for his forthrightness and courage. Barry graduated from East Rockaway High School the year before I did, and we have known each other since we attended Rhame Avenue school. Although we have been acquaintances for almost the entirety of our lives, we only became good friends this past year. In t hat time, I have been made aware of his deep commitment to the residents of East Rockaway, his neighbors and friends, and have come to appreciate his contributions to East Rockaway and value his advice. Barry, it has been a pleasure to have worked with you on a professional basis for the past 9 months, and East Rockaway is losing a valua- ble voice on its Board of Education. You have served your community well, and I wish you luck on your new professional endeavors, I look forward to working with you in other capacities and in other areas in the years to come. The Board will certainly be poorer for your absence.
