Lynbrook Elks Junior Bowling Charles Bariliari MARATHON FOR THE MCGUINNESS FAMILY. On Saturday, March 24th, the Lynbrook Junior Fire Depart- ment Was just one of the many teams that played in Lyn- brook High School's Volleyball Benefit Marathon for the John P. McGuiness family. \Jack\ McGuinness a well loved and respected teacher at South Middle School died of a heart attack last year. The Junior Fire Department on the right \spikes\ the OLDER firemen from Engine Company on the left who also took part in the marathon. The final score between the Juniors and Engine Company was not released so as not to embarrass the OLDER fireman. (Photo by Steve Grogan) Raider Football by Sue Vito Thank you all our friends for making our party a tre- mendous success. As a mat- ter of fact I knew it all along. Our Raider People are more like a family, and when the family has a problem eve- ryone pitches in to help. To show you what a suc- cess it was, this column was late because I was too tired Sunday to write one. The food was fantastic, our DJ, Hank Benning was great, and as 1 predicted anyone that showed up had a great time. As with any party, there are always a few people that have to work hard to make it all go smoothly. We owe so much to Sally & Rod McLane, that we cannot begin to thank them. They were responsible for the food that was there that night. Then we have to thank the Carrigans and the Perri's for the decorations and the rest of the refresh- ments. But, most of all, thanks to all those who cooked that delicious food, those delictable desserts, and most of all to those who could not come, but sei^t donations. I don't want to name anyone in particular because I know I'll probably leave someone out, but to all who helped in the kitchen, and helped putting the food out into the sternos, we thank you also. Our DJ provided us with a wide range of music from the '40s right up to the '80s, we could not say the music was not from our \time\. The dance floor was never really empty, and if you had a request and it was possible to play. Hank played it for you. Thanks to our DJ for helping our night a success. Yes, as I sat at the party that night I felt proud to be a \Raider.\ BREGLIA FUNERAL HOMES INC. 260 Atlantic Ave.. East Rockaway Long Island, New York opposite St. Raymond's R.C. Church LY 3-4203 ttrooklyn 491 DE KAIB AVE (212) NE 8-5515 : Th9 H OUM of Broglia - funeral Directors Since 1913 With on week remaining to the season, the race for first place is on. The First Place Fabulous Four were knocked down to recond place by one-half a point by the Hells Angels. Never in the history to our league has the race been so close nor has the lead changed hands so many times. At the start of this week's league bowling nerves were stretched to their limit as the Fabulous Four and Hells Angles pitted skill against skill. The Fabulous Four took the first game over the Angels by 94 pins, thanks to the superior bowling of Joe Acquafredda (114 pins over average) and Denis Moth- erway (plus 14 pins over average). The Angels not to be outdone, rallied in the second and third games in a supreme team effort to beat the Four in the second game by 16 pins and the third game by 7 pins. Eric Mohamad's plus 44 over average did a lot for the Angels. The Third place Wander- ers were no match for the fourth place Munchkins as Sal Brescia (plus 51 pins over average) and Matthew Mento (plus 28 pins over average) soundly defeated the Wanderers 8 to 3. For the Wanderers Kevin Con- nolly (plus 44 pins over average) did his best but could get no help from his teammates. However, the Wanderers luckily still maintain their third place standing. The Fifth place Chargers only took one game in their race to the top against the Pin Heads. For the Pin Heads Brendan Klapak (plus 51 pins over average) won the day against Michael Smith's fine 28 pins over average for the Chargers. The final score was The Pin Heads 8, The Chargers 3. The Weeble Wobbles defeated the Mrs. B's Babes 8 to 3. The Wobbles were led by the fine bowling of Alison Muchnik with 75 pins over average and Vikki Brescia with 27 pins over average. The Babes all bowled their average but it was not good enough against the dynamic Weeble Wobbles. The Three Stooges Plus One trounced the Mr. B's Brats n -0. The girls didn't stand a chance against John Acquafredda (plus 97 pins over average), Scott Smillie (plus 38 pins over average) and Chris Mansfield (plus 30 pins over average). The Arrows met up with the Wayouts and that is exactly what their bowling was, WAY OUT. Melissa Fighera outshone the brightest star bowling 88 pins over average' to bring home victory to her team. The Strikers had an easy victory against the ever miss- ing Great Ones. Despite the fact that the Shrikers won by forfeit, they decided to give it their best as Matthew Per- rin (plus 71 pins over aver- age) really outdid himself. Kevin Connolly bowled 20 pins over average for his team. Saturday, April 14, is the last week of bowling for this league. Along with the fact that most teams will be vying for a top place in the league's final standings, the children's scores will also be used in our Annual Bowl Your Coach week. This year we have added a little twist to this event as the boys will be given a choice of which coach they choose to bowl against. They will be bowling against Doug Wolf, Barry Gendler and Frank Smith. 1 have seen all three of these coaches bowl and believe me, the boys have their work cut out for them. All three are members of the Elks Men's league which bowls on Tuesday nights. The girls, as usual, will be bowling against Mrs. B. The winners will receive a trophy for their efforts which will be awarded at the Annual Sports Awards Nights, held at Lynbrook Lodge in May. Our up and coming events for the children for the lodge, include the annual Olympics held at Greis Park on Sunday, May 6. Applica- tions are avaflaMe at the difld- ren's schools and we encourage the children to, come out and participate in a fun filled day at the park. The children must pre- register to participate, sot don't delay and get those applications back to Youth Activities so you can enjoy this spectacular event. East Rockaway Youth Soccer Barbara Edell Despite the ram on Sun- day, the first round of the Chase Tournament did take place. Our three traveling teams took on their respec- tive opponents in the rain and mud and all played really super games. The Strikers met Hun- tington and were defeated by the score of 4 - 3. The Strikers played a good game, and close game, matching Huntington goal for goal until time ran out. Tom O'Neill, Bob Citkovic and Leo Guarino scored the Strikers' goals and Keith Festa played outstanding soccer at midfield. The whole team made a terrific effort and played terrific soccer. The undefeated Eagles totally dominated the Levit- town Arrows and came with a 7 -1 victory. Michael Clin- ton scored a hat trick, Adam Shestack scored two goals, and Matthew Smolinsky scored the remaining two. Jordan Goodman played a great game all over the field. Kenny Steinmen made a great defense play, saving a goal. \Speedy\ Jon Marcus was outstanding in the nets, and did good work playing center forward toward the end of the game. The marve- lous passing ability of the entire team contributed to a really super win for the Eagles. The Rowdies finally put it all together and played super soccer. Though they ended up on the short end of a 3 - 1 score, they outplayed the \Division 4\ HBC Chargers for most of the game. The forward line looked great as they passed beautifully to set up numer- ous scoring opportunities and moved back to help out on defense when needed. Tai Le scored the Rowdie goal off an assist by Michael Smolinsky and Denis Hood contributed a great game, moving aggressively to the ball and making the plays happen. The halfbacks, Paul Rooney, Brett Beldner and Vinny Troiana, all played terrific two-way soccer and defensemen Mike Medford, Bruce Ostroff and Marc Jacobsen made some key defensive plays for East Rockaway. The traveling teams regu- lar games on Saturday, as well as those of the intramu- ral teams and the clinic teams were all canceled because of the weather. There are no games sche- duled next weekend because of the holiday. Frank Schnur will be returning ^ to continue his coaches' clinic on Sunday, April 29th at 10:00 am at Waverly Park. We hope to see all our coaches take the opportunity to attend this wonderful clinic. We wish all of our players and their families a happy Passover and happy Easter. RETIREMENT HONORS.
