MORE MONEY FOR SCHOOLS. Lynbrook Public Schools The Executive Committee of the Lynbrook Council of PTA supports the budget and urges everyone to vote yes. Founder's Day Lynbrook Council of PTA, with the cooperation of the Lynbrook Public Schools, invites everyone to this year's Founders Day Celebration to be held May 15th at Lynbrook High School at 7:30 p.m. This year's theme will be \LET'S GET PHYSICAL\. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Thea- tre, with the installation of PTA Council Officers for the year 1984-85 and presen- tation of PTA Life Member- ship Awards. Following this portion of the program, all in attendance will be invited into the Gym to see a large number of Lynbrook stu- dents from the elementary through High School level, give a demonstration of var- ious activities taught and nurtured in our Physical Education Program. Candidates Night Cancelled Due to the fact that incumbent candidates for the school board are run- ning unopposed, the Lyn- brook Council of PTA has cancelled the Meet Your Candidates Night on Mon- dya, April 30. Flea Market The Lynbrook High School Parent-Teachers Association is planning its annual.fund raiser, a Flea Market, to be held on April 28 from 10 A.M. in the school gymnasium. Funds raised from this event are used for the Senior Luncheon on graduation day. Vendors may obtain additional information by calling Lillian Gudowitz, second vice-president at 374-3791 LYNBROOK SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES The district clerk of the Board of Education of Lyn- brook Public Schools announces that the follow- ing candidates have filed poetitions for the School Board: Mr. George Berch, Incumbent- running unop- posed; and Mrs. Alicemarie Bresnihan, Incumbent - running unopposed. The* Lynbrook Union Free School District will hold its election on May 2, 1984, at which time the voters will cast their ballots for the two candidates and for the budget. James Billelo, proprietor of the salon took students Laurie Mayer, Denise Levy and Cori Burros on a guided tour, offered lengthy expla- nations of the different facil- ities, lectured on the training and educational require- REFLECTIONS OF ERHS By Lisa Grunberger Sadd Day Students Against Driving Drunk have a full agenda scheduled for students in grades 9-12 on April 12th. AT 9:00 A.M. Father Frank Pizarreli will address the students on the crucial topic of drunk driving. The stu- dents were fortunate enough to get Senator Carol Ber- man to speak on this issue as well. After the assembly, students will attend specific workshops they have chosen, among 20, on sub- jects relating to driving drunk. This SADD Day is East Rockaway High School's first and all members of this newly formed club, under the guidance of social worker Mrs. Marion Abramson and social worker intern Miss Beth Guttman, have organized and prepared extensively for this special day. SADD Day has been designed to make people more aware of the conse- quences that can and often do result when alcohol is combined with driving. This is especially true among teenagers who are most affected by drunk driving accidents. Through the dis- tribution of bumper stickers, pamphlets, pins, and ottier literature concern- ing drunk driving, SADD hopes to reduce the number of fatalities caused by drunk driver? each year by alerting people as to the existence of this major problem in our society. Dates To Remember April 12th is the late regis- tration deadline for the SAT. April 16-April 23 marks spring recess and on April 24th school reopens. On May 3rd a representative Chess Champs from Marvwood College will be at the high school at 1:30 P.M. On May 5th the SAT exam will be adminis- tered at Lynbrook High School. The dates for this year's College and Career Day Program at Hofstra University are May 21 and 22 from 9:00 A.M. to 12 noon and an evening session on May 21 from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. juniors at East Rockaway High School will be taken by the counselors to one of the day sessions. Trips Chairman of the Science Department, Mr. Jeffrey Herschenhous, and Gifted/- Talented Coordinator, Mrs. Jean Clark, accompanied both Physics students and Gifted and Talented stu- dents to the Brookhaven Laboratory on Friday, April 6th. In Sports... The baseball games were all cancelled due to thft weather. The track team beat Malverne on Tuesday, April 3rd. The badminton team defeated Clarke High School, 5-2 on April 5th. Centre Salutes Former Student The staff and student body at Centre Avenue School acknowledge with pride the outstanding achievement of one of its graduates, Rebecca (Becky) Brezenoff. Becky graduated from Centre in June, 1978. She was honored recently as one of Nassau County's top academic students. Our teachers remember her as a fine school citizen and as an outstanding stu- dent. Centre's principal,, Loretta Marshall, notes that Becky still comes back to Centre where she shares her talents and energies helping two non-English speaking students learn to speak English. Our congratulations and best wishes to Becky. Lynbrook Adult Continuing Education ments for licensing as a hairdresser by New York State, and made his entire staff available to answer questions. Mrs. Wendy Joseph, Faculty Advisor to the Honor Society commented on the great impact and enthusiasm fostered in our students by our Mentor Program at Leonardo's. The Lynbrook Adult Continuing Education Department is pleased to announce a new and unus- ual course ~ Adventures on a Shoestring - Enjoying Yourself Inexpensively and Imaginatively in New York City. This one session 1V2 hour class will be held on Tues- day, April 3, at the Atlantic Avenue School, Lynbrook, from 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. for a fee of $10.00. The instructor, Howard Goldberg, takes you into all the nooks and crannies of New York City from visiting Broadway playwrites to Soho artists; from colorful ethnic celebrations to haunted houses; from CHESS CHAMPS. Lynbrook South Middle School is proud to announce the v/inners of its first annual lunchtime Chess Ladder Tournament. The school champion is 7th grader Robert Appel, hav- ing defeated both 2nd place winner 6th grader Robert Weiss, and 3rd place winner 8th grader Michael Gross- man. Chess computers and chess books paid for by Lynbrook South PTA were awarded the winners as well as 4th, 5th, and 6th place winners, 8th grader Brett Beldner, 7th grader Edward Talvy and 6th grader, James Quirk. They also received chess sets. In addition, 75 other students received the book \Chess in a Nutshell\ for having completed at least 10 games in the tour- nament. Commenting on his win, Robert Appel said, \The competition was great! Keven Gottlieb of Lynbrook South Middle School were #1 and #2 top money raisers, respectively, in the Metro- politan, New York City and Nassau/Suffolk Counties Easter Seals Basketball Shoot-out. Donna raised over $500, and both students were presented with a trophy on March 24, 1984 at half-time at Madison Square Garden. The stu- dents also appeared on the Easter Seals telethon on April 1st. Besides being presented with the trophy. Donna and Kevin, along with Kris Got- tlieb, Laura Skellington and Lori Gudowitz attended a clinic with the Knick Bas- ketball players on March 24th. These students, along with the rest of the student body at Lynbrook S outh, raised over $1500 for this worthy cause.
