For additional information, call the Department of Community Medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital (516) 536-1600, ext. 105. OfuC CONGRESSMAN & MRS NORMAN F. LENT Hempstead Presiding • Supervisor Thomas S. Gulotta announced that, effective immediately, the Town is imposing a ban on the use of lead solder in all water-supply plumbing con- struction in the Town of Hempstead. The ban is applicable in all unincorpo- . rated areas of the Town, and Gulotta is urging incorpo- rated villages within the Town and the Nassau County Health Department to adopt similar restrictions as soon as possible. \As a result of extensive tests performed recently by the Town's Department of Conservation and Water- ways, as well as various other health agencies, it is now clear that the lead used in water supply solder joints can decompose and produce excessive amounts of lead in first-flush water\ Gulotta said. \With the availability of extensive substitutes, there is no reason to furthen expose our residents to these potentially dangerous levels of lead. The health and safety of our residents must take priority over all other considerations.\ According to Supervisor Gulotta, the State drinking- water standard for lead is 50 parts/billion, but recent tests have indicated that concentrations of up to 7,000 parts per billion have been found in relatively new homes on Long Island where lead solder has been used. The problem is con- fined to new homes or homes where new water supply plumbing has been installed within the past year. Gulotta emphasized that lead solder poses a potential health hazard, but that resi- dents be au are ot se\eral sal- ient points: *The high concentrations of lead are usually only found in the first half-gallon of water used after the sys- tem has been unused over- night, so residents should run the faucet for about one minute before using in the morning, or after a pro- longed period of non-use. *The problem is confined to new homes or homes with new plumbing work installed within the past year. After about a year, the danger is dramatically decreased because the resid- ual and minerals in water tend to build up a sealent effect, thereby \locking in the lead\. •The \sealent\ effect can be expedited by flushing a new system with water equi- AUXILIARY POLICE GET STATE FUNDS The East Rockaway Aux- iliary Police will receivc $3,000 in state funds, according to Assemblyman Arthur J. Kremcr. \ These funds will be used for the purchase of lile- saving equipment,\ says Kremer. \1984-85 is the first year the state included money in its budget for this important community group. The Auxiliary Police performs a valuable service and deserves our support.\ Assemblyman Kremer is Chairman of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. valent to a year's use, to increase solder aging. Gulotta noted that the Town was implementing a public education program designed to notify all resi- dents and contractors of the new ban. The program includes the posting of warn- ing signs in retail stores and letters to all plumbers and contractors licensed within the Town of Hempstead, announcing the new restric- tion on the use of lead solder. \We are moving quickl;y on this because the safety of our residents is of para- mount importance. By implementing this ban, and by our residents heeding the suggestions mentioned ear- lier, the exposure to high concentrations of lead in drinking water can be greatly minimized and, most probably, avoided. More- over, our Town Building Department, will carefully monitor the plumbing installations within the Town to insure complete compliance with these important new rules\ Gulotta concluded.
