Official Newspaper INCORPORATED VILLAGE East Rockaway SCHOOL DISTRICT INCORPORATED VILLAGE Lynbrook SCHOOL DISTRICT Petitions Available Nominating petitions for seats (3) on the Board of Education of the East Rockaway Union Free School District are now available in the office of the District Clerk, located in the East Rockaway High School. They may be obtained on all school days between 9:00 a.m. and 4:i00 p.m. At this year's election, scheduled for June 12, 1984 at the East Rockaway High School, there will be three seats on the Board of Educa- tion to be filled as follows: 1. To elect one member of the Board of Education to fill the office of Albert Kachinoski, whose term expires June 30, 1984, for a new term commencing July J, 1984 and expiring June 30, 1987. 2. To elect one member of the Board of Education to fill the office of Dolores Maggio, whose term expires June 30, 1984, for a new term commencing July I, 1984 and expiring June 30, 1987. 3. To elect one member of the Board of Education to fill the vacancy in the office of Rose Marie Brande, whose unexpired term is for two vears, ending June 30, 1986: All Board positions are to be voted on an at-iarge basis. The two candidates each receiving the highest total individual votes will be elected for the full three year term. The candidate receiving the third highest individual total vote will be elected to fill the two year unexpired term of Ro.se Marie Brande. Young people have always added muscle, spirit, and glamour to the Frolic, starting with the really wee ones in the Baby Parade, clinging to their parents' hands, and on up through the high school and higher. The East Rockaway Fire Department responds to the emergency. RISKY FOOTING. Members of the ERFD negotiate the roof while smoke billows from the windows. On Sunday March 18, 1984 at 5:37 pm the East Rockaway Fire Dept. responded to a cellar fire located at 340 Main Street, East Rockaway. While advancing on the fire, an explosion occurred. Firemen had to evacuate through the windows. The force of the explosion was so great it blew part of the brick facade off the building. The blast also buckled part of the first floor. One injured fireman was taken to South Nassau Community hospital and was later released. Young People Lend A Hand by Mildred Roemer St. Raymond, Troop 26, and Troop 121. Troop 332 first exhibited a typical tent- ing campsite on the grounds, hut since then has raised funds with a penny pitching machine. Several of their Eagle Scouts assisted Tony Peppito with building the booths still in use. They will help grounds chairman Richard Racioppi again this year. Gerald Salmon is their scoutmaster. Troop 26 under the guidance of John Weis has entertained liter- ally thousands of children over the years with their swaying rope bridge they Board Submits $3.3M Plan The East Rockaway Board of Education has voted to submit a $3.3 mil- lion renovation bond refer- endum to the voters of School District 19 on Tues- day, May 15. On March 21 at East Rockaway High School, towards the end of the •fourth evening meeting at which the East Rockaway Board of Education was conducting a public review of recommendations for a renovations-only bond issue, the log-jam finally broke and the following actions were quickly taken: • a renovation bond issue for the district's three schools was unanimously approved by the Board in the amount of $3,340,740 for presentation to the dis- trict's voters for their approval^ • the date of the bond issue referendum was set for Tuesday, May 15, 1984, with a public forum to explain the bond issue sche- duled for Thursday, April 26, 1984 (a date chosen to coincide with the annual joint meeting of the four PTA's). • the date for the public hearing on the proposed 1984-1985 annual budget was moved forward to Thursday, May 21, 1984, and the budget vote/board elections date was recon- firmed for Tuesday, June 12, 1984, • the hours for voting at the bond referendum and at the budget vote/board elec- tions were set to begin at 6:00 A.M. and end at 9:00 P.M. on May 15 and June 12, respectively. Theschool-by-school breakdown is as follows: Centre Avenue, $603,460; Rhame Avenue, $676,650; High School, $2,060,630. These actions were the culmination of more than three months' work that began on the evening of December 14, one night after the six-to-one defeat of the 10.4 million dollar bond issue that included replacing the district's two elementary schools and renovating the (Continued on Page 4) Becker: Close Hannibal's Pending Appeal Assemblyman Gregory R. Becker (R-C, Lynbrook) today said he is introducing legislation which would close down drinking estab- lishments if their liquor license has been cancelled or revoked, pending the appeal process. The Becker bill comes in response to Hannibal's Pub where the establishment's liquor license was cancelled on Feb. 1 of this year, yet under current law it can remain operating while the case is being appealed. \Needless to say, the Lyn- brook residents who fought so hard to close down this pub are terribly upset that it continues to remain in busi- ness while the court appeals are exhausted,\ Becker stated. \In the interim, residents continue to be subjected to noise and boisterous behav- ior coming from the pub,\ he added. Becker said that even though he is working with the State Liquor Authority to bring a court date as soon as possible, as long as they are allowed to remain in bus- (Continued on Page 4) ' Rabbi Harold Saperstein <Continued on Page 4) Temple Emanu-EI To Honor Rabbi Saperstein A testimonial dinner will be held at Temple Emanu El of Lynbrook on June 24, 1984 to honor Rabbi Saper- stein on the occasion of his fifty years in the Rabbinate. During these fifty years. Rabbi Saperstein has served the Jewish Community locally, nationally and internationally. He has been President and Chairman of put up. In the beginning it was a penny a \walk-over\, but with inflation the price has been raised to two cents. Troop 121 has not been active in several years but Art Parrinello their former scoutmater has faithfully, year after year, organized the popular hot dog and cold drink stand. East Rockaway Girl Scouts have merged with Lynbrook, Malverne, and Lakeview (ELM). Gloria Christiano, long-time Scout leader, has been in charge of their activities, beginning (Continued on Page 4) COMMENDATION. The members of the Citizen's Advisory Committee on Renovation and Repair were given citations by East Rockaway Board of Education President Richard Meagher at the March 12 meeting at the High School. President Meagher commended the committee on its hard work for the past three months.
