Kids and Cults <e 3 U. KIDS AND CULTS. Carol Giambalva, an expert on the subject, talks with club members (left to right) Andrew Minet, Pat Ryder and former Lynbrook Mayor Glenn Spielman. Kids and Cults was the featured program at the February meeting of the Lynbrook Republican Club. The discussion was of great interest to club members, and was followed by a ques- tion and answer period. The meeting also saw a report from Assemblyman Greg- ory Becker and a visit from newly appointed Court Judge, Ira H. We.xner, who lives in Valley Stream. The next meeting of the Lynbrook Republican Club will be held Wednesday, March 7, 1984 at 8:00 p.m., at the American Legion Clubhouse, 134 Union Avenue, Lynbrook. Letters (continued from Page 2) because this unfair doc- umentation, which will be repeated many times, causes the Vietnam Vete- rans to feel betrayed, together with the fact that this propaganda is being seen by our youth & stu- dents, I request that any further funding be terminated. Hope the Corporation will agree with me and millions of others, who publicly supported our servicemen & Country during & after the Viet- nam War, that \Home- front USA\ does not qualify under the fairness doctrine and is truly bias, distorted, slanted & untrue reporting. After your investiga- tion, I respectfully request a reply on the Corporation's decision. Sincerely, Raymond W. Gimmler EDITOR 'S NOTE: This letter was sent to the Pres- ident of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The author asked that the Observer print it in its Letter's section. Kindergarten Registration The East Rockaway Elementary Schools will hold registration for September 1984 Kindergar- ten classes in March. To be eligible for admission to kindergarten a child must be five years of age as of January 1, 1985. If your child is of kindergarten age, you should be receiving your registration appointment and health forms in the mail within the next few days. If you do not receive these forms, please contact your school office for an appointment. If you plan to register your child at a private or parochial school, please notify the school office prior to your registration appointment. Editorial (continued from Page 2) phone calls to merchants urging them not to advertise in the Observer, harassed local resi- dents who wrote in opposition to the bond issue, and petitioned the East Rockaway School Board not to renew the Observer's official status, which would result in serious loss of revenue for this newspaper. This same small group of malcontents have now taken their campaign of revenge to the East Rockaway Village Board. At the last meeting of the Board, Mrs. Pat Kearney, an ardent supporter of the defeated bond issue, urged Mayor Reinhard not to renew the Observer's status as official newspaper for the Village and instead appoint the Local News as official newspaper. Mrs. Kearney said one reason for rescinding the .Observer's status was the fact that she believes the Observer does not correctly report the facts in its new articles. She supported her appeal with the fact that I am an officer of the East Rockaway Republican Club. It should be noted that Mrs. Kearney was accompanied by Mrs. Eileen Glorioso and Mrs. Eileen Mansfield, two of the defeated bond issue's strongest supporters. Last month, Mrs. Glorioso and Mrs. Jane Brezenoff, a reporter for the Local News, urged the Board of Education to rescind the Oberserver's official status. Mrs. Mansfield, who has several times publicly denounced both liie and my newspaper for my beliefs with regard to the bond issue, also writes for the Local News. No matter how Mrs. Kearney tries to veil her motives, her actions are simply an effort at economic blackmail. Mrs. Kearney and her friends didn't like the fact that I opposed them, so now they are trying to punish this newspaper by withholding a source of sub- stantial revenue. 1 find this activity repugnant. This discontented lot may, if it wishes, not read my newspaper, but it is not within their rights to harass my advertisers, spread groundless stories about me and my news- paper, attack my friends merely on the basis of my association with them, or attempt to use local governmental bodies to seek vengeance against one who only dares to disagree. As to Mrs. Kearney's contention that the Observer inaccurately reports the facts, 1 pub- licly challenge anyone to point to one instance in which a news article published in this news- paper since my tenure as editor has contained a misstatement of fact or an inaccuracy of content. I have made this challenge repeat- edly. I have never had any takers. Why? Because the Observer prints the facts no mat- ter whose feathers they ruffle. Mrs. Kearney, you should be ashamed for stating baseless untruths in public. Mrs. Kearney also noted with despair that 1 am an officer of the East Rockaway Republi- can Club, and that this in some way disquali- fies me from being an effective editor. To this 1 respond: My political affiliation is my busi- ness, Mrs. Kearney, and none of yours. Parti- san politics has no part to play in this matter; the fact that you have for many years been an active member and officer of the East Rocka- way Democratic Club, Mrs. Kearney, gives you no right to question my political beliefs. Now you will probably tell me that I should not be a member of the Kiwanis Club, or the East Rockaway Action Party. No doubt you'll even tell me to what Church 1 should belong. Who gave you the right, Mrs. Kearney, to pass judgment on others in public due to the organ- izations to which they belong? Please don't concern yourself with my affairs, Mrs. Kear- ney, because they are none of your business. 1 don't agree with your political leanings, Mrs. Kearney, but I will defend your right to prac- tice them in any way you desire. Please afford me the same courtesy. I hope that Mayor Reinhard realizes that this small group of scorned residents is merely trying to use him as a tool for theii own venge- ful purposes. I hope that he will not dishonor his high office by becoming an instrument by which certain people carry out their plans of economic blackmail. However, should he suc- cumb to the bully tactics employed by these people, I will be forced to use the route taken by the former editor and owner of this news- paper. When he has assailed for his beliefs and there was an attempt to rescind the Observer's official status, he went to court to protect his rights. I am fully prepared to do the same. An Arts-ln-Education'Review The Arts-In-Education Committee of the East Rockaway Schools met recently to review, its accomplishments to date.- This year, at both Centre and Rhame Avenue Schools, the group presented \The Festival of Brass,\ a professional pro- duction of \Of Mice and Men\ and a performance- workshop day by Vinie Bur- rows, noted actress and radio personality. Our younger children, so attuned to the limitations of TV entertainment, were especially thrilled to see and hear real people performing right before their eyes. All the artists were gracious and responsive, and completely at home with the enthusiasm, questions and comments of our young audience. Many of the children said afterwards that they felt they had lekrned a lot in a happy relaxed atmosphere and would love to see more of the same. In March and April, Arts- In-Education is sponsoring two bus trips to the Calderone Theatre in Hempstead. The first .event, a productidn of \Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\ is open to fifth and sixth graders. In April, a Young People's Concert featuring Opera Options and the Nassau Symphony is being offered to children from Grades 3-6. Flyers announcing these events have been sent home. Parents are urged to send money to school quickly so that tickets may be reserved. The committee wishes to thank the PTA's of our elementary schools and the East Rockaway Teachers' Association for their generous moral financial support. and Scholar Dollars - What Are They?
