Observer Christmas Party GETTING TOGETHER. The Observer and her sister newspapers, the Beacon and Citizen, held their Christmas party at the Lawson Pub in Oceanside. Joining in the fun were (left to right) East Rockaway Village Trustee Anthony Santino, East Rockaway Republican Leader Phil Christ, Baldwin Republican Leader Mai McGarry, Publisher Hank Bialick, Lynbrook Press Secretary Steve Grogan, Lynbrook Mayor William Geier, and Editor John Hambei. A GOOD TIME. The party was enjoyed by ail. Mayor Geier and Maria Heller, advertising manager for the Observer, join Trustee Santino, Phil Christ, John Hambei and Steve Grogan for dinner. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WAVERLY PARK The Waverly Park School celebrated its 30th Birthday with an evening of fpstivities including a choral perfor- mance, slide presentation and a ballad of Waverly Park written by the stu- dents. Some teachers from the first class at Waverly Park were in attendance. They were Ruth Anderson, Steve Kaufman, Ann Whit- ton, Elsie Radden and Rhoda Dreifuss. Waverly's first PTA Pres- ident, Dorothy Corwin was also an honored guest. This Week at Temple Emanu-EI Temple Emanu-El of Lynbrook invites you to join us for Shabbat Services on Friday evening, December 23, at 8:30 P.M. Rabbi Stuart Geller will conduct the service and Cantor Howard Tushman will chant the liturgy. Rabbi Geller's sermon is titled, \Returning to Martin Luther.\ Services will continue on Saturday morning at 11:00. This week Rabbi Geller and Cantor Tushman will lead a special \study service.\ This informal worship service is an opportunity to pray together and to join in dis- cussing the weekly Torah text. REFLECTIONS OF ERHS By Lisa Grunberger Dramatics Club advisor, Mr. Martin Severino accompanied fifty members of the dramatics club to New York City on Wednesday, December 14th to see a pro- duction of Broadway's hit show. La Cage Aux Folles. Reactions to the show var- ied although everyone seemed to have an enjoyable and memorable day. The annual senior Blood Drive will take place on Tuesday, December 20th. Interested seniors must be 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 lbs. to donate blood. A signed permission slip from parent or guar- dians is also required. The Holiday Concert will be on Wednesday evening, December 21st, at 8:00 PM. Featured will be the Senior Band and Junior Band under the direction of Mr. David Meoli and the Senior and Junior Chorus under the direction of Mr. Edward Miller. The Madrigal Sin- gers and the Junior and Senior Jazz Band will also perform. The PTA will be at the concert selling Scholar Dol- lars. In buying them, you are supporting the 1984 graduates. An assembly for grades 10-12 was held on December 14th. Professional dancers were invited to the high school, exposing the stu- dents to many diverse types of dance ranging from the 1920's jazz dance styles to modern dance; ending with the 1950's dance style. The dancers received an overall positive, enthusiastic response from the students. Members of SADD - Students Against Driving Drunk attended workshops in Malverne on Tuesday, December 6th. The work- shop topics included the legal aspects of drunk driv- ing, the emotional and phys- ical effects of alcoholism, and steps to prevent such actions from occurring in the future. A SADD day at the high school is projected to be held sometime in the Spring. Basketball results: December 14th —Boys'JV and Varsity teams were defeated by Long Beach. Girls' Varsity team defeated Calhoun. December 15th - Girls'Varsity defeated Long Beach in the opening round of the East Rockaway tpur- nament. Girls' JV defeated Oceanside in the opening round of the Freeport tournament. Have a good week. Refreshments will be served in the \ illage Hall immediately folowing. All residents are cordially invited to attend. Lynbrook Public Schools Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Warner of East Rockaway announce the engagement of their daughter, Paula, Mary, to Mr. Christopher \ ecchiarelli. son of Mr. and Mrs. John Vecchiarelli of Bayside, New York. Ms. Warner is a graduate of Hofstra University and is a candidate for a Masters Degree at St. John's Univer- sity. Her parents are the former publishers of the East Rockaway/Lynbrook Observer and her father is presently Editor of the Long Island Examiner. Ms. \ ecchiarelli holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration and an Undergraduate Degree in Economics from St. John's University. He is presently employed in a branch of the Federal Government. A fall wedding is planned. Christmas at St. James Church St. James United Metho- dist Church, Lynbrook, extends an open invitation to two special services on Christmas Eve, December 24, and a regular service of worship on Christmas Day, December 25. On Christmas Eve at 7:00 P.M. the Sunday Church School youth, under the direction of William Jeffries, Assistant Pastor, and Barbara Carroll, Direc- tor of the Youth and Junior Choirs, will present the annual Christmas Pageant. At 11:00 P.M. the Candle- light Service of Lessons andCrols will be held in the sanctuary. TheChancel Choir, directed by George d. Schoengerg, will sing special mus'ic of the season, includ- ing anthems by Brahms, Pergolesi and Juengst. Pas- tor Robert E. Richmond will bring the Christmas Message. Immediately before the Candlelight Ser- vice, the English Handbell Choir, directed by Ethel Grote, and brass and string instrumentalists will present Christmas festal music beginning at 10:40 P.M. On Christmas Day, the sacra- ment of Holy Communion will be administered during the ten o'clock Sunday ser- vice of worship. On Saturday, December 10th, the U.S. Marine Corps held their annual \TOYS FOR TOTS'* Christmas Drive with the help of Adams-Russell Cable Ser- vices of Lynbrook. The annual toy drive by the Marine Corps thi-oughout the country was held this year at Lyn- brook Village Hall and was broadcast on Adams-Russell Cable-TV throughout the day. Board Seeks Volunteers The East Rockaway Board of Education held an emergency work session on Wednesday evening, December 14th, for the pur- pose of addressing ways to correct the serious, exten- sive renovations and repairs needed in the school dis- trict's three schools-. After exchanging many ideas and suggesions with a large audience of people from the community, it was decided by the Board to consider the possibility of another Bond Issue sometime in the Spring of 1984. The Board of Education extends an invitation to the East Rockavy^ay Public Schools On Wednesday, November 23rd, Mrs. Gunther's and Mrs. Selesky's classes joined together for a traditional thanksgiving feast. In order for this to be such a delight- ful celebration the children had a great deal of preparation. In Social Studies wer stu- died all about the first Thanksgiving. Using this information, the children wrote their own thanksgiv- ing song. Mrs. Selesky acompanied them on the guitar. On Tuesday the classrooms were filled with • the delicious aroma of Lynbrook School The Lynbrook Board of Education met in the Atlan- tic Avenue Board Room on Wednesday, December 14. The Superintendent reported that the Girl's Var- sity Volleyball Team won the County Championship this season, and congratu- lated them for .their arhipvements. . iiC Board then con- cluded various personnel matters. Residents with technical knowledge, such as, electri- cians, roofers, masons, architects and engineers are especially being solicited to serve as evaluators and advi- sors on the architects' prop- osals for the three schools. Anyone wishing to assist on the committee should call Mrs. Rose Marie Brande at 599-3716. apples. The children peeled, cut and placed their apples in the crock pot to create homemade applesauce. At the dinner the children wore their handmade Pilgrim hats. As they feasted on tur- key with all the trimmings, they popped popcorn. Our special guests, Mr. Grandinetti and Mr. Jacoby, were also treated to a taste of applesauce and a rendition of \The Thanks- giving Song\. It was an enjoyable and educational afternoon for all.
