ON BEHALF OF BOARD, BRANDE ASKS FOR SUPPORT OF BUDGET The 1983-84 School Budget, proposed by the East Rockaway School Board of Education, has resulted from several months of careful preparation by the Superintendent of Schools and the Busi- ness Manager in concert with the Board. As was announced publicly, all residents of the community, as well as staff, were invited to sit in on all budget decision meetings and to offer comments and suggestions. Based upon the Superin- tendent's overview of the school system since last summer, and using the recommendations of last year's Citizens' Committee s which dealt with curriculum recommendations, financial recommendations, and building ar^d grounds recommendations, the Board has attempt- ed to integrate into the new btidget all those recommendations that they sincerely feel will improve the education of the children in the East Rockaway School District. Faced, annually, with inflationary costs of utilities, supplies, and materials, with salary increases based upon contract negotiations of 1981, every area of the budget was studied so that costs would be held down while academic offerings were improved. First concern is the OFFEING OF AN EXCELLENT ACADEMIC PROGRAM; next, the PROVISIONS FOR SOME OF THE MANY, EXTENSIVE, AND LONG-OVERDUE REPAIRS to our buildings and grounds. Most of the recommendations of the Citizens' Committees were addressed last year, and again this year, in this budget. For example, curriculum revision and expansion has been done this year, and will continue to be attacked this summer. We have mandated keyboard- ing for all High School students. Giraduation requirements have been increased beyond 20 credits and requirements in Social Studies, the Arts, and Science are being increased. Work shops for teachers' professional growth are being offered on a larger scale than ever before, just to mention a few items. These are all essential endeavors, all at mmimal cost to taxpayers. In the area of building maintenance, a twelve year repeated re- quest from the Science Dept. to the former administration, for accoustical ceilings in the labs, has been provided; the same has been done in our Business Ed. classrooms. Lockers have been painted and repaired in the high school this year. Renovation of the high school Continued on Page 12 GIFTED & TALENTED AT LYNBROOK BD OF ED The Lynbrook Board of Edu cation will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 11th, at 8 p.m, iri the High School Cafeteria.
