INCORPORATED VILLAGE East Rocfetiway SCHOOL DISTRICT INCORPORATED VILLAGE Lynbrook SCHOOL DISTRICT miEmiiXifs {Lssmmm OBSERVER J- -ui^rary USPS 165080 VOL. XVI. NO. 19 EAST ROCKAWAY, NEW YORK 11518, THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1983 Gulotto Hempstead Presiding Supervisor Thomas S, Giilotta today (Tues- day) ruled out Bay Park as a possible future site for a Town landfill. The Bay Park location was one of 34 such sites throughout the Town that had been identified in a consultant's report as \available acreage\ for future landfills. \A considerable degree of concern has been expressed by area residents regarding the possibility of the Town locating a future landfill in Bay Park. This concern was fueled by a premature news- paper story containing preliminary information,\ Gulotta said. \This information was gathered by an independent consultant to study future refuse options should the Hempsead Resources Recovery Plant not re-open. \To set the record straight, and to allay any fears which this unfortunate newspaper article may have aroused, I wish to state, unequivocally, that the Town has no intention to, and will not locate a landfill in this community. We will continue to explore various options for future solid waste disposal, but the location of a landfill in Bay Park is not among those options, Gulotta concluded. E. K, VILLAGE BOARD CONDEMNS PROPOSAL Prior to the issuance of the above statement by Presiding Super- visor Gulotta, the East Rockaway Village Board, at its meeting on Monday night, adopted the following resolution, expressing its deep concern and shock over the proposed landfill in Bay Park: \It has been reported in the press that the firm of Camp, Dresser and McKee have made recommendations as to garbage disposal sites in their capacity as consultants to the Town of Hempstead. These recommendations include the area of Bay Park as a preferred loca- tion for a dump site and landfill. \Bay Park is contiguous to the Village of East Rockaway and is the site of an existing major sewage and wastwater treatment and disposal plant which has a history of discharging foul odors over the entire area. \During the past two years, the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of East Rockaway have met on numerous occasions with officials of the Town and County. We have repeatedly protest- ed the excessive traffic burden through the Village to the Bay Park Sanitation Plant. We have pointed out that dangerous, highly corro- sive and toxic materials are transported through narrow, congested streets in the Village. These materials pose a hazard to all our resi- dents, as well as those in neighboring communities. Tank wagons loaded with thousands of gallons of evil smelling, septic materials that drip onto our streets, damage the roads, and the adjoining homes; rumble through the Village each day. Local commerce has been adversely affected. The Village and its residents have not been compensated for these durdens and resultant damage. \It is obvious that any additional traffic generated by a landfill garbage disposal operation would: 1. Aggravate the already dangerous traffic conditions; 2. Cause major damage to road beds and residences; 3. Increase the health hazard to Village residents by adding noxious and odorous solid wastes to the liquid sewage already being transported through the Village streets; 4. Have adverse impact on the utilization by Town and County residents of the Bay Park recreation complex; Continued on Page 3 Happy St, \Patrick's Day n.PffmicK5D(w.
