(RT. 9) OPEN MONDAY THRU SATURDAY 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. chairman of the AHSA's drug testing committee, and Or. Jordan Woodcock of Katonah, the organization's chief veterinarian, have arrived at after analyzing the program during the past year. \Last year at this lime, we had tested 80 shows,\ ~ said McDevitt, a Philadelphia at torney, in an interview Saturday \This year we have tested 114 and next year the program will continue to ex pand \We are heartened by the results The positives have declined by two-thirds and we hope some day they will be zero We take no pleasure in getting a positive on a test.\ McDevitt added that the overwhelming majority of trainers are completely behind -the-progr-anv, _ \That is more than just a personal opinion,\ he said. \It is proved by the fact that many trainers have been willing to testify against those brought up on charges in an effort to keep the sport clean. \We even have had cases of trainers sending us samples to be analyzed when they thought they detected something suspicious We are aware that here and there someone gets away with drugging a horse But the trainer is taking a long chance \ McDevitt said the main concern now of the AHSA is the problem of a reserpine-based drug which has been found in a few horses. \It is difficult to detect,\ said McDevitt. \But we can find it Some trainers have gotten away with using the drug because we have not been looking for it. No sensible owner who is aware that his horse could die as a result of the drug would permit his trainer to use it Insurance companies now are looking for the drug in post mortems and refuse to pay claims if it is detected Dr. Woodcock said the reserpine-based drug was one of the original tranquilizers and was used in mental institutions \It was then introduced to horses,\ he said \But was dropped when it was found to have very erratic effects There have been recorded cases of horses being killed by the drug I can't understand how any trainer, no matter how desperate.h.e..is_lD_win 1 would stoop to using this drug \ McDevitt said that starting next year, penalties to trainees found guilty of violating the AHSA's drug rules will be stiffer — especially to repeaters \Every cent that we take in for the drug testing program is being used for enforcemenrand research,\ said McDevitt \In fact, it is a source of pride to us that the AHSA really initiated the research program for tranquilizers \The race tracks have always been more interested in checking for stimulants Now they are looking to us for in formation on tranquilizers We hope that eventually they will contribute to our program \ Swimming championships to be divided into classes WHITE PLAINS - The 1972- 73 scholastic swimming season gets under way Friday, December 15, with the ninth annual Westchester Swimming Officials Association Relay Carnival at the White Plains High School pool The first of six events begins at 7 p.m. More than 140 awards will be given to the first, second and third place teams in each event No team trophies will be presented Wrestling program in Pleasantville PLEASANTVILLE - A wrestling demonstration and films of the 1972 NCAA championships will help kickoff the Pleasantville Dads' Club's third wrestling season Thurs day at 7 30 p.mi. in the Pleasantville Middle School gym Boys in grades 5-8 who attend schools in the Pleasantville School System may register for the wrestling program following the film This year the program will feature a merit rating system, similiar to the black belt systems of judo and karate, which will encourage boys to progress at their own rate The Pleasantville High wrestling team, under the direction of coach Frank Scappaticci, will be giving the wrestling demonstrations AAohansic closes; will reopen in April WHITE PLAINS — Dun- woodie in Yonkers and Saxon Woods in Scarsdale are the only county golf courses which remain open Maple Moor in White Plains, Mohansic in Yorktown and Sprain Lake in Yonkers closed for the winter last Sunday Dunwoodie and Saxon Woods will remain open until the last Sunday in February All five courses will reopen on the sec ond Wednesday in April Each team will enter five swimmers in the 500-yard relay and teams will be represented by two divers in the fancy diving competition Other relay events are the 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard medley Joe O'Brien of Port Chester and Robert Wilson of White Plains are co-directors of the meet Wilson, who has been instrumental in organizing and directing scholastic swim meets for the past 15 years, will bow out at the conclusion of the season A record number of schools are expected to compete in the 1972 meet Some 20 schools are anticipated to compete in the relay carnival as compared to 13 teams which swam last year Yorktown Rec plans ski trip YORKTOWN - The Yorktown Recreation Department has scheduled a week-long ski trip to Interlaken, Switzerland from February 16- 24 Included in the $315 cost is roundtrip jet transportation via Swissair, transfers to and from Interlaken, seven nights ac comodations (double oc cupancy) in a first class hotel, full American breakfast and tax and gratuities Further information con cerning the trip may be ob tained from Brian Slavin, recreation supervisor, at 245- 4650 PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE NOTIC E IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT TH E STATE COMPTROLLER IJAS CAUSED A N EXAMINATION TO BE MADE OF TH E ACCOUNT S AND FISCA L AFFAIRS O F POUND RlDGE FiRE DISTRIC T TOW N OF POUND R l DO E WESTCHESTER COUNTY FO R THE PERIOD BEGINNING O N JANUARY I 1970 AND ENDING ON DECEMBER 11 1971 THE REPORT OF SUC H EXAMINATION HA S BEEN FILED I N MY OFFICE WHERE it is A PUBLI C RECORD AVAHABIE FO R INSPECtlON B Y All IN1ERFSIED PERSON S G R tWlDY SEC R E 1AR Y COMP tROl I 12 9 7?
