Each of these women has invited to the November 28 inaugural luncheon meeting by the Advisory Board of the Lighthouse because she in dicated interest in the Lighthouse or assumed leadership in other community activities. The organization will support and promote activities of the Lighthouse through community education and involvement and special fund-raising activities. The philosophy and goals of the Lighthouse were explained at the meeting by Mrs. Alva Bound, Chairman of the Advisory Board: \Besides rehabilitation and training for the blind and visually han dicapped throughout West chester, the Lighthouse strives continuously to integrate its services with existing facilities in the community.\ In a film, \What to Do When You Meet a Blind Man,\ the point was made that the only difference between a blind man and a man with sight is that the former cannot see. TERRY 1Jj7-72 time, and the more I read the crazier I saw the world was,\ said Howard. \The one thing I got out of working was that I really tried at something for the first time. But I saw so many people between 20 and 60... I could have what they have... a good job, money, a lot of con fusion, It was all before me but it wasn't what I wanted. I started getting used to smokitjg marijuana, and as I got more dissatisfied and confused I got more involved with drugs.\ Deciding he could make a contribution to society by becoming a lawyer, Howard went to St. John's law school in Brooklyn. \In law school, I saw there was no justice in the legal system. I realized that as a radical lawyer I'd have to fight, and I didn't want \o fight for the rest of my life, I started to feel that the only important thing was, to get myself together.\ Howard left law school after the first semester, and went to California with friends. \I had this impression that California was where everything was happening. I was looking for the counter culture, for peace* I thought that's where it was but it wasn't there, either.\ Back on the east coast, Howard went to live in Boston with a girl he has fallen in love with. He found a job in a warehouse. \I had no pressures of career or family ... I was really in love, It was a quiet, peaceful time for me.\ Reading a book about astrology was his first step toward an spiritual life, says Howard. \The book gave me a hint of the unity in all religions. I was brought up Jewish, went to services and got bar mitz- vahed, but I hadn't really had much contact with religion \ That summer, Howard left Boston and lived with friends on an old farm in Vermont. \I was away from society, smoking dope all the time, being with people like me. We stopped eating meat and grew our own vegetables.\ He started getting into more spiritual things, doing much reading about oriental religions. Howard returned to Bdston in the fall, but left the girl he had been living with because \I knew I had to follow the spiritual path.\ He ate mostly fruits and nuts, and started fasting. \I had really long hair. I hitched.around living out of a pack on my back.\ \I„knew what I was looking for wasn't in women, careers or anything I had exper ienced yet. I was looking for pure love, and not depending on a person or things. I i\° o getting more and more confused but using drugs less. I had a little experience with LSD and mescaline but I couldn't give up grass.\ His parents were in Florida for a month, so Howard decided to spend a month resting in ibeir Mt. Kisco house. One day an old friend called to say he was heading for Florida and wanted a companion. \His situation was very similar to mine,\ says Howard. \We thought if we got out on the road and let things flow, something would happen.\ The two travellers arrived in New Mexico and, stayed at a guru-run shelter. \They were doing all the things I had been into but still something was missing, I started feeling we should really go back toward New York, and my friend felt,, the same way. \On the trip back, we metj another hitchhiker from' Denver who told us about Guru Maharaj Ji. 'What you want is knowledge,' he said. 'Guru Maharaj Jl gives knowledge. He will show you the divine light within.' I knew that was what I wanted.\ In June, Howard returned to New York to hear Maharaj Ji speak. \He was very clear and simple. He said nothing I could disagree with.\ Howard returned the next day to listen to the mahatmas — those who transmit the guru's knowledge. \The mahatmas said everyone who wanted to receive knowledge should come to C.W,/ Post college at 8 the next morning. That seemed right, since I never received knowledge when I was a student there.\ The next morning's knowledge session lasted 12- hours. The mahatmas tran smitted a meditation technique and taught the.holy name of God. \This word is a primordial vibration. It cannot be spoken.\ Shortly^ i/after receiving knowledge:H6ward=rnoved,'intoii; ashram ret?eatvhbMse;oh;,East*' 83rd Street ; 'irt;;pWiYlbrk|AsfB ' devotee of 'Guru Maharaj Ji^hfe jj hkd %• cutihis; h#fi$ sHayeihis -i beard,-; etfiTvffiffi&tffy&W' meatffisH-^i ^ifeHd -ViBmain. celibate;^\* 1 .
