RON MEUNCON'S Sideline Chatter Pigskin 'Profit' Although the 1972 pro grid season is heading into the homestretch, there are four divisional races that could go either way as well as both \wild card\ playoff berths. Only the Miami JDolphins in the AFC East have clinched a divisional title while Oakland-needs only one more victory to clinch the AFC West. •Pittsburgh and Cleveland, both 8-3 on the season, should decide the AFC Central race Sunday when they meet head-on in Pittsburgh. The same situation prevails in the NFC Central Division where Detroit and Green Bay go into Sunday'.s game deadlocked in first place. Both clubs are 7-4, one-game ahead of Minnesota which still has a good chance of taking all the marbles if they win their remaining three games. In the NFC East, Washington holds a two-game edge on Dallas but they must play the Cowboys next week. In the NFC West, only one-game separates San Francisco, Los Angeles and Atlanta. This race will probably go right to the wire. All the pro grid teams will be in action Sunday with the exception of the San Francisco 49ers and Los An geles Rams who will meet in the ABC game of the week Monday night. The Giants, fresh off their 62-10 win over Philadelphia, travel to Cincinnati while the Jets play host to New Orleans at Shea Stadium.' The Giants still have a shot a,t the wild card in the NFC, although it's a long shot chance at best. They must defeat Cincinnati, undefeated Miami and Dallas in their final three games just to be in the running. The Jets, despite their 6-5 record, have a better shot. If Pitt beats Cleveland Sunday and the Jets win their remaining three games, including a win over the Browns in the season finale, they'll sneak into the playofFs. Two college and three pro games will be televised locally in the next three days. ABC is televising a twin- bill today w Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. with the traditional Army-Navy game. At 4 p.m., ABC will air the USC-Notre Dame contest On Sunday. CBS will televise the Giants-Cincinnati game 1 p.m. and NBC will show the Oakland-San Diego contest at 4 p.m. On Monday, ABC closes out the action with the Fnsco-LA game at 9 p.m. This Pigskin 'Profit' has compiled a 95-44 won-lost record for the pro games and a 156-60 slate in the college ranks. Westlake, under coach John Gira, lost four players to graduation, but the Wildcats have enough talent from last year's team to improve on their 11-9 record, y Down the pike in Valhalla, coach Frank Ehrhart enters his seventh season with many key players returning. \We are going to be a much more physical team this season,\ said Gira. Just looking at 6-7 Steve Dubois and 6-4 Ken Hume would be enough to scare many teams, Dubois, a senior, Is very strong off the boards and has improved on defense. Paul Crandell returns for his third and final season. The 6-2 \outside man, who can just as easily play up front, is a fine shot and strong off the boards. Coach Gira is very high on Crandell. Playmaker Mike -Maliniak moves the ball well and has a 6-2 frame which allows him to occasionally crash the boards. 'The third outside spot will probably go to either Mike Decker or Ray Beninato. Decker is 6-0 and Beninato measures in at 5-11. Another guard prospect is Eric DeMichele. The youngest player on the squad is freshman John Gira, the coach's son. Gira along with Bill Chambers, Tom Marx and George Dolan give coach Gira a ' strong bench. Valhalla lost a good one when Bob Greiner moved on to Manhattan College, but coach Ehrhart has the personnel to go after Rye and a CWL cham pionship, Leading the way is senior guard Jeff Goldstein who scored at an 18 point clip last year. Goldstein is 5-11 and has an excellent touch. Right up there with Goldstein is Fred Jackson, who really came on in the latter half of the season last year. Jackson, a 6-3 senior, gives the Vikings tremendous rebounding strength and knows how to put the ball through the hoop. Keith Adams, another starter from last year, joins Goldstein in the backcourt, Adams, a 5-10 senior, scored 10 points per game last season and is the Vikings top playmaker. Rounding out the starting five will be forward Joe Buonasissi and center Cliff Monroe., Buonasissi, a 5-11 senior, saw a lot of action last year and Monroe, 6-3, found himself last year and added great offensive punch. Backing up Monroe at center will be 6-2 Mike Fiore while Daryl Bleich, Dave Rotundo, Frank Baker and Bill Boyle are up front. Lending backcourt strength is Nick Giachino and Steve Panny. Mike Wishart and Gary Petrosino will also play important roles for Valhalla. Five' female sprinters are among the 29 candidates who have turned out for North Salem's first indoor track squad. The number of male athletes ( 24) out for the squad is considered a good turnout since North Salem only has 140 boys in grades 10-12. As usual the Tigers will be strong in the middle distances and distances with such stalwarts as Ken Murphy, George Vogel, Steve Buckley, Peder Scott. Ralph Falk, Billy Mills and Mark -Scott com peting. Murphy has run 1:58 for the 880 in early workouts and Vogel and Buckley 0:34 and 9:59 for the two-mile. Murphy and Vogel are All-County cross country performers. However, the major surprise' has come in the sprints where Kevin Kirsch, Paul Slivinsky, John LaJoie, Lew Stern and Mark Jones have shown great promise. Four of these speedsters have clocked sub -55 second quarter-miles and the prospects of good mile-relay team are in the future. The five female members of the squad are senior Vicki Girko. junior Karen Morozuk, sophomores Thea Penny and Ann Thomas and freshman Cheryl Bruce. The team's weak point will be in the field events where the only ray of hope lies in the shot put with Junior Art Her nandez's 45 foot heaves. However, for a team in only its first year of existence, the North Salem Tigers may surprise the established teams. North Salem opens its indoor season Saturday, December 9, at the John F.
