14 - PATENT'.TRADER Saturday, Dec. 2,1972 ©rand Union cutting pollution by trucks EAST PATERSON, N. J. - The Grand Union Company says it is curbing emissions from its fleet of delivery trucks and protecting the atmosphere from further pollution. For the last five years, the nation's tenth largest food chain has been converting its 194 company-owned trucks from gasoline to diesel power \It was a deliberate move based on two considerations,\ noted Leonard Wheat, fleet administrator for the company. \First as a company, we are especially concerned with the environment. It has been proven that diesel emissions are far less dangerous than gasoline emissions. They emit very little carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, two main ingredients of air pollution \Secondly diesel-powered engines, in addition to being environmentally superior, are less expensive to operate The fuel burns cleaner and the engines don't require as much maintenance.\ Mr. Wheat said Grand Union's company-owned fleet of tractors is now all diesel. \We recently completed the last conversion,\ he noted. In addition to complying with state and local air pollution regulations, each Grand Union truck must also conform to the company's own stringent emission standards. \Each driver has to report on a daily basis,\ Mr. Wheat said, \if there is excessive smoke coming from his engine If Ryiam HilLsponsors there is, the truck is taken out of service and placed in the repair shop until the condition is corrected.\ At the present time, he said, the company operates its own trucks from the Mt. Kisco and Waterford distribution centers. Other distribution centers are handled by trucks leased from six contract hauling firms. \While we don't have ab solute control over the trucks which we use from contract companies,\ Mr. Wheat said, \we encourage them to follow our example and make their fleets as pollution free as -possible —— bus safety films, courses ARMONK - In line with the •emphasis on school bus safety ;in the Byram Hills School ^District, a series of district ^driver meetings has begun on a '.monthly basis. Films and •meetings on bus safety are -being scheduled in the schools .and at PTA meetings, and five drivers have received cer tificates from the J State Education Department for having successfully completed a ten-hour course of advanced instruction on bus driving. Recently an area-wide course in air brakes was hosted by Byram Hills Transportation Director Robert Alexander. He also has begun a series of rides on buses for parents and tours of the district bus garage. At a bus driver meeting last week, Assistant Superintendent for Business, Charles Robinson, presented certificates praising the men for the driver training programs they completed in addition to a 20-hour course. Recipients were Louis WOODSY OWL HOOTS: Recycle cans, bottles and paper. Bowman, Richard Smith, John Goldmark, Robert Totten and Mr Alexander. Byram Hills bus operators have successfully completed over 316,000 miles on the road in the past year without an ac cident chargeable to a district driver. In two instances minor accidents took place when cars skidded into the buses, but there were no major injuries Some 5,800 of these miles were for field trips, 7,300 were for athletic events Mr Alexander, who has been transportation director for three years, has introduced added safety programs, such as the monthly bus drivers' meetings and AAA and Motor Fleet Safety Programs. An advanced training program will be started for drivers in the New Year. Students here now get only two \chances\ at misconduct in buses under new policies adopted in the District A first offense results in a report by the driver and a warning to the student; a second offense means the student does not have bus privileges for a week or two. Teachers and parents are being made aware that the driver's primary responsibility is to the safety of the children, which means he must always concentrate on driving and not on discipline. Children receive bus safety instruction at the opening of school each year and children entering kindergarten have a special meeting before school opens to ride on the buses and observe safety rules Byram Hills employs 12 full-time drivers and 13 part- time drivers There are 33 buses in the fleet, with 26 used on a daily basis and seven used as spares.
