PATENT TRADER Thursday, June 10,1971 — 3 Printers donate old type to Greeley memorabilia * * 1 C^tafl^^ta and formerly associate director S^^lri^S *2fift&£2 CHAPPAQUA - In a gesture honoring Horace Greeley, founder and editor of the New York Tribune, two officials of New York Typographical Union No 6 journeyed to Chappaqua, Greeley's country home for the last twenty years of his busy life They brought a drawer of appropriate type - Caslon 60— to fill the type-setting case the teen-age Greeley used in Poultney, Vt The case, a simply-made piece that dates from his apprenticeship, 1826- 30, was being prepared for the June l£ opening of the Chap paqua Historical Society's new museum The officials were David W. Crockett, vice president of local 6, and Anthony J Cessa, chairman of the union's ap prentice committee and coordinator of its research and development fund Greeley, while editor of the Tribune, was president of the typographical union at its founding in 1850 and worked successfully to improve wages and working conditions of the printers The union officials also presented on behalf of Bertram A Powers, their president, a volume on the union's history and copies of tf»e two pictures of Greeley that hang in Mr Powers' office In time for the open house after dedication of the New Castle Town Hall on June 19 — a double local celebration from noon to 3 p.m — the Historical Society's new town hall head quarters will display tangible results of its varied activities over the past several months MOST CONSPICUOUS will be- major items in the society's Greeleyana collection which, through contributions raised in its fund drive, have been restored and preserved Back in 1955 before there was a Chappaqua Historical Society - it was founded in 1966 — a group of concerned citizens had raised funds to buy many of these items from Horace Greeley's great-grandson, F C Greeley Stahl Plans to display them permanently in the Horace Greeley School, now the Robert E Bell School, which stands on part of Greeley's famous farm, did not materialize The collection was displayed at various temporary homes since then and was finally hidden away for lack of space in the basement of the high school. It was by then badly in need of repair It included, besides his type setting case, the desk and chair used as editor of the Tribune, a large oil portrait of him, his cradle, his mother's spinning wheel, several busts, letters, books about Greeley, volumes from his personal library, engravings and pictures Caring for Greeley's books is Mrs Walter B Adams, with the advice of Mrs Douglas G Grafflln, director of the Chappaqua library Cataloguing, preserving and displaying historic papers is Mrs Clendon H Lee, town historian Preservation and display of fabric articles is the concern of Mrs- Kenneth J McCaffery Publicity chairman is Mrs Wil Lang The committee has been aided also by several con sultants on restorations. The Society set up a museum committee to rescue and preserve this valuable collection. Greeley's large walnut desk and chair were turned over to the Village Cabinet Shop on Lexington Avenue in Mt Kisco For owner Daniel Ciliberti. working on the desk was, to a great extent, a labor of love \While I was working on it,\ he explained, \I thought about the kind of man Horace Greeley was, what he thought, what he might have written at this desk \ The portrait of Greeley by the Brooklyn artist Charles Cole Markham once hung in the Horace Greeley School it was restored by St Julian Fish- burne of New Paltz Repaired and cleaned was a plaster bust of young Greeley by Joel Tanner Hart, one of the American expatriate artists in Italy in the mid-nineteenth century, who specialized in portrait busts of Henry Clay Mrs Donald H Whitney, Society president, said, \We are most grateful to the many people of our town for their support — for their financial aid, their gifts and en couragement We hope so much they will be pleased with what we have accomplished thus far and that in time everyone in New Castle will visit our museum and headquarters\ THE SOCIETY moves from three rooms on the second floor of 101 King Street to its new headquarters which it shares with the town historian — a room 15 by 20 feet on the lower level Certain items must be stored, but they will be featured in special exhibits The new museum, which will be staffed entirely by volun teers, will be open on Wed nesday afternoons from 1-4 p m and by appointment It features a see-through window that enables visitors to view it whenever town hall is open Chairman of the museum committee is Mrs Povl Bang- Jensen, assisted by Mrs Walter S Mills, Jr In charge of fund raising is Mrs Donald H Whitney, with Mrs Charles R McKeever as fund treasurer Supervising arrangements for the new space and moving is Mrs Stanley C Fell She is being aided by Mrs M Samuel Harris curator of the society's mini-museum, and Mrs Richard E Wilson, assistant curator and gifts chairman DECORATING has been handled by Mrs Edward G Sweeney, with the help of Mrs > Donald S Kellogg ALAN Y.
