Perseverance p a y s off for S ardinia model Speaking long distance to the Herald while on assign ment in Los Angeles, Nancy LaScala traced her recent success in her career as a model. Former classmates of the Sardinia native, who is the daughter of Cecelia and Samuel LaScala, can look for her picture in the January is sue of Cosmopolitan magazine, which is due to appear on the news stands this week. She is pictured in connection with a story about blind dates. Nancy LaScala “I’ve wanted to be a model since I was seven years old,” said the Pioneer Central School graduate, “I remember watching the Miss U.S.A. pageant on television with my grandmother, when I an nounced I was going to do that some day. My grand mother had me write down my life goals at the time, and becoming a model was one of them.” “I never attended modell ing classes but am basically very self-motivated, and I read a lot of magazines, lis tened and watched models in shows and learned my work th a t way,” she said. FOLLOWING GRADUA TION from high school, Miss LaScala earned her associate degree in business and travel from Genesee Comunity Col lege. During that time she was associated with the Faces Modelling Agency in Buffalo, for which she did some promotional work, fashion shows and a televi sion commercial. However, she decided th a t moving to New York City would provide more opportunities for modelling, where she has lived for the past two and one-half years. In the begin ning she worked a t the recep tion desk at the Hyatt Hotel to support herself, but now she devotes full time to her modelling career. In the “Big . Apple,” she is represented by the Beth Ann Agency, through which she has ob tained assignments modell ing for catalogs, fashion promotions, swimwear and 'I've w anted to be a model since I was seven years old\ local television commercials. In Los Angeles on a tem porary job, she is posing for a six-page editorial spread for the Italian glamour magazine, International VUE. Not only is Miss LaScala traveling across the country, she expects to leave for Italy in January, where she will be associated with the Ricardo Guy Agency in Milan for a six to seven-month assignment. HER MOTHER described Nancy, one of seven children, as always having been “outgoing, friendly, self-as- surea and open,” who spent much of her time with horses and 4-H activities. She spoke with pride of her daughter’s outstanding achievements in high school track where she placed third in the state meet Fa-la-la-Ia-la Arcade Elementary students gathered around the Christmas tree on the school lawn last Friday to join in a n old-fashioned c a rol sing. in th e '‘walk” event. Mrs. LaScala is not, however, as positive in her feelings toward the magazine in which her daughter is ap pearing this month. “It’s (tne magazine) a little too open for my taste,” she said. Nancy credits h er own per severance for her success toward achieving her goals.
