All five children attended Sardinia High School Jake returned to Sardinia in 1946 after overseas duty in World War II and in July, with the help of his father who worked at W.A. Case in Buffalo, started a plumbing, heating and hardware store in tne former Rosier Hardware Building on Schutt Road. When Bob returned from overseas duty in Oc tober, he joined Jake in the new business. “Gas was ju s t coming into Sardinia in 1946,” recalls Jake. “We were really busy installing most of the first gas lines in the Sardinia hamlet. Bob was the inside man, running the store, and I was the outside man, doing installations and pump work.” Jake flashes his trademark grin. “I b e t we have installed more plumbing and heating and water pumps in this area over the last 40 years than anyone else.” Sardinia Supply has had as many as eignt installers on the payroll at once. Many former employees, after learning their trade from Jake ana developing the kind of skill it takes to m eet his exacting standards, have started suc cessful businesses of their own. “Some of them are my m ajor competitors today,” Jake adds. “But competition is good for business and the community. I’m glad to have played a role in Sardinia’s economic development.” Today Sardinia Supply has five full-time employees and one part-time worker. Jake’s three sons, Walter III (Wally), Joe and Jeff all work for the family business. Bob and Jake are both still active and another employee, Ed Carley also works for the firm. The company is headquartered at the curve on Route 39 in Sar dinia and has enjoyed one of its most successful years ever during its 40th anniversary season. “We’re going to celebrate our anniversary and say thanks to our customers at an open house,” Jake says. The open house will take place on Friday and Satur day, December 19 and 20. “We’ll have refreshments and prizes and special prices,\ Jake says. “I hope everyone will stop by and say hello.” Arcade's Bordeaux Cheese receives international award H.R. Of course, a Kubota G-Sencs lawn and garden tractor is a great way to cut the grass. And with a liquid-cooled 2- or 3-cylinder diesel engine, a Kubota is designed to outlast ordinary gas mowers by several seasons. But that’s not all. A Kubota G has a live front PTO shaft drive and a variety of hard-working implements. For example, you can choose a snowblower, tiller or front blade. There arc four Kubota G models, from 10 to 14 horsepower. Some come with hydrostatic transmission as standard equipment.
