Sports Mike’s JV Spotlight BASKETBALL Holland finished fourth and Pioneer took second at the McDonald’s Tip-Off JV Basketball tournament last weekend, hosted by Pioneer, Springville defeated Hol land on Friday, 70-32. Bill White netted 18 points‘for the Dutchmen. The host Panthers defeated Bishop Walsh 50-44. Jeff Gretzler netted 14 points and Jim Carmody scored 10 to lead Pioneer. The Eagles defeated Hol land in the Consolation game on Saturday, 57-47. White paced the Dutchmen again, netting 26 points. Springville beat Pioneer in the championship game, 58- 34. Gretzler scored 23 points, and Chris DeGraff pulled in nine rebounds. Jason Kourkams of Springville was named MVP for the tournament. Jay Glosser coaches the Holland JV squad. The rest of the team is as follows - sophomores, along with White: Bill Heiler, Mike Beahre, Justin Uhrinek and Tim Phelps; freshmen: Mike Davis, Jamie Spencer, Chris Mathewson, Calvin Seadeek, Eric Kramer, Dave Hack and Jason Zaccarine; eighth graders: Pat O’Connor, Chuck Caly and Roger Giles. WRESTLING Pioneer won both of its JV wrestling starts this week, defeating Alden, 52-5, and Depew, 52-30. Scott Beckwith, 132 lbs., pinned his opponent to lead the Panthers over host Alden. Pioneer won many bouts via forfeit. The Panthers scored eight falls to beat visiting Depew. The Leafs jumped out to a two-goal lead but couldn’t hold on. J. Eccleston got the winner at 14:52 of the second period. Kevin Brant had a four-point game including a hat trick. The Law-Men pulled together and upset the Bamfs, 6-5. Rob Mangino got the game winner at 14:31 of the third period. Randy Matuszak haa two goals and two assists for the Law-Men. Jeff Miller had a hat trick in a losing effort for the Bamfs. The Benders pulled off the upset of the year when they defeated the first place Titans, 2-0. Rich Ertl got the game winner in the third period after two previously scoreless periods. Tom Kibler had an outstanding game in the nets for the Benders. The Mon Byrds moved into second place by beating the Jets, 11-1. Brian Schneider scored his first of two goals at 6:01 of the first period to clinch it for the Byrds. Jeff Schue and Rich Howe each had two goals for the Byrds. John Roache scored the lone goal for the Jets. RIT team counts on Haskell Jeff Haskell is one of only four veterans returning to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) varsity basketball team this year. He has been a starting guard for the past two years and his coach is counting on him to handle the duties of the floor general this season. Haskell, a graduate of Pioneer Central School, was named to the second team All-Independent College Ath letic Conference (ICAC) last year, and averaged 11 points and five assists during the season. Majoring in business, the college junior is the son of Anne Haskell of Arcade. On Wednesday, Holland hosted Iroquois, the defend ing champions, and the Chiefs beat the Dutchmen, 58-7. Jon Videtti won a four- point decision at 132 lbs., and Mark Claus won via decision at heavyweight to lead Hol land. Visiting East Aurora took advantage of three forfeits on Friday, as the Blue Devils defeated Holland, 36-33. East Aurora only won four bouts.
