A petition bearing some 19,000 sig natures proclaiming opposition to the collider being built here, which has been presented to President Reagan, and the published opposition expressed by most elected offipialk of the area, were not considered in tne academies’ recommendations. Those factors will, hopefully, be con sidered when the Department of Energy determines its final choice for the SSC site, according to Congressman Frank Horton, who, with Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, has expressed oppo sition to the Wayne County site from the beginning. The Department of Energy is expected to make its final selection this summer and confirm it in January of 1989. CATCH will continue to utilize the support of local and area politicians who have taken up the fight against the collider in the hopes that they will have an influence on the final decision. As it stands, the Wayne County site remains a contender among eight sites being considered nationwide because of its suitability for the $6 million phys ics research facility. It remains doubtful that the project will be located here, but in view of this week’s recommendations by the acade mies, CATCH organizers and followers have good reason not to give up their fight.
