IRISH T1CDGS - APRll-CDAy. 2002 eiR G 5 The Speers Report by Craig Edward Speers Its time for some random thoughts on events that affect our Irish community in west ern New York. Many thanks as always to the very hardworking Parade Committee from the UIAA, for their fine effort in organiz ing this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. The various organizations and their marchers should be praised for their outstanding efforts in this time honored Buffalo tra dition o f Irish pride. It was extremely touching to observe one float that bore the names of all the members of the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, and NYEMS who lost their lives in the WTC attack. That type of heartfelt effort by the float creators deserves special commendation. It was obvious to a regular observer and participant in the parade that there was a noted decline in police presence on the parade route. This was most apparent at the corner of Delaware and Allen streets where only two police offi cers and several parade volun teers struggled mightily with out success to keep the spec tators at the curb line. The crowd- at one point surged into the street partially block ing the parade units. Thanks are in order however to our Hibernian brother Traffic Lt. Tom Masterson for his fine work with the parade units. Another obvious point to be made is that the city’s open container ordinance is now history. No enforcement of this ordinance was observed during this year’s parade. The Buffalo Fire Department now has a com pletely new lineup of top offi cials. The new Fire Commissioner is Calvin Worthy (formerly the deputy commissioner), and Deputy Commissioners Margaret Keane of South Buffalo, James Malone o f North Buffalo, and Michael D’Orazio of Editor's Notes We are committed to a bi monthly deadline of the 15th of that particular month. The deadline for our next issue will be May 15. Your response to articles or your individual contribution is needed to allow the paper to continue its growth. Feel free to mail ideas or suggestions to: BuFFalo lRish Times, 245 Abbott Road, • Buffalo, NY 14220. Cheektowaga.Congratulations on your promotions! One surprising aspect to the appointment of Michael D’Orazio as Deputy BFD Commissioner, pointed out to me by a fire department source, is that he resides in the Lossom Road section of the Town of Cheektowaga. Apparently this is the first time in department history that an appointed commis sioner does not reside in our great city. Hopefully Deputy Commissioner D’Orazio will be seeking a permanent resi dence within this beautiful city in the very near future. One would think that all appointed non civil service command officers in both the city police and fire depart ments would be required to establish permanent residence within the city. Since these commanders are on 24-hour call, it would seem to be counterproductive if they reside in Cheektowaga, Eden or Clarence. One interesting observation for your kind consideration - how many police officers and firefighters from Amherst, Tonawanda or West Seneca - would be allowed to reside in Buffalo? (Answer- none). Speaking of police and fire services, if this grand city is to survive and again flourish citizens must be assured of their safety - cutting 400 fire and police positions from the city budget is certainly not the responsible approach to budg et woes. There is an absolute necessity to provide for essen tial public safety coverage for all citizens and visitors to our city. One shudders at the thought of city parks without adequate policing, or a high rise building fire with insuffi cient fire personnel to sup press it. Tell your council member- no public safety reductions, keep our city safe! I was born on September 17th, 1956 in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York, at the Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital. My birth mothers name was Mary Courtney and this was her married name. I have the original hospital bill for my birth. The bill is made out to like this: Mrs. Mary Courtney 3rd. My adoptive father Arthur W. Welsch paid this bill on September 23rd, 1956.
