It certainly comes around quickly doesn’t it? With it come the many par ties that get us in the spirit of this beautiful time of year. The Daughters, as usual, are the first ones in December to kick off the season. Saturday, December 1st was our annual get together, where we met new friends and greeted old ones, and wished everyone the most blessed of holidays. This year, the Chairpersons were Kathleen Hennessy and Bonnie Sommer, who did a great job putting our party together. The members brought small gifts for the Psych Center, we had a basket raffle and a good time was had by all! Our annual charitable dona tions were sent to the follow ing: OLV St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, the Tara and Mareid Fund, and the Special Mothers to be at Mercy Hospital. Bonnie Sommer chaired the election of officers for 2002, and the present slate of officers were re-elected unanimously. President Jean Rosenberry thanked the members for help ing to make 2001 a good year. We are selling new cardigan sweatshirts with the DE logo, in navy blue or off-white. They are very nice and one size fits all...the cost is $15.00 and they will be available at the meeting, or by calling Jean at 835-6897 They will make great Christmas gifts! Plans are perking along for our annual Calendar Luncheon to be held on Saturday, May 11th in the Emerald Room of the Irish Center. If you would like to attend, please call Bonnie O ’Hara at 675-1601. The tickets are $10.00 each for an afternoon of good food, a basket raffle and much more. If you would like to host ess a table, let Bonnie know ASAP. Please keep in mind that October 2002, we will host the National Convention here. The details will be in the newsletter, but if you can help in any way, please call Jean and let her know. Well, it’s been quite a year, one where we had our faith and courage tested, and it looks like we passed the test with flying colors....the Red, White and Blue please keep the flag flying, and each other in your prayers. Have a won derful Christmas and a Happy New Year. St. Pat’s Irish American Club By M eme Riedy We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. The weather has been great, so far. Now we are gearing up for the Christmas season. Our annual Christmas party will be held in the Claddagh Room of the Buffalo Irish Center on Saturday December 15th beginning with cocktails at 6pm and a delicious dinner at 7pm. We are pleased to announce that we will be hon oring two very special ladies as our “Honorees of the Year”, Mary Greene and Ruby McCafferty. They have been very active and instrumental in our organization as well as many others over the years. It is always an enjoyable and memorable evening and tickets are available by calling Sheila Barrett at 824-8871, Anne Coffey at 826-3431 or Meme Riedy at 675-7046. Our elections were held at the November meeting. The current officers were elected for another term. Congratulations to Anne Coffey, President; Carol McSwain, Vice President; Meme Riedy, Secretary; Jean Rosenberry, Treasurer and Bud Rosenberry, Sargeant at Arms. We are also planning an interactive Dinner/Theater fundraiser, that will be held on February 2nd, 2002 in the Emerald Room of the Buffalo Irish Center. Tickets are $25 and are available now and include a sit down dinner and the show. It will be a fun evening so mark that date on your calendar. New Year's Eve at the Irish Center will begin with Mass at 7:30 followed by a buffet din ner and Music by the Irish Leftovers. The ticket price of $30 (members) and $35 (non members) also includes drinks, hats, noisemakers and a cham pagne toast at midnight. Tickets are limited so reserve yours early by calling the Tara Shoppe at 825-6700. We wish you a very Happy Holiday Season. by Carol McSwain At the Open Meeting of the GAAA, on November 9, Mary Heneghan was nominated to a three year term from the floor. Sheila Barrett and Kathy Masterson were nominated from St. Pat’s Irish American Club and Jack Fecio was nomi nated from the Knights of Equity. All were reelected to the Board of Directors. John Carney conducted the election for the Board^The remaining directors were not up for re- election and will remain on the Board. John Carney thanked the Board for their work. He stated that the appearance of the building shows the progress we have made. John noted the great leadership Mary Hene ghan has shown as Chairman of the Board. The new kitchen is complet ed. Tom Heneghan planted new flower boxes that decorate the parking lot A new sound system has been installed in the building. Glenn Bernardis, an audio engineer and a member of Kilbrannan and Jack Fecio installed the system at a rea sonable cost for the club. We were fortunate to have Neil O’Shea perform his one- man show at the Buffalo Irish Center on Sunday, December 2. Neil is a member of the Irish Actors Theater. He attended the Abbey Theater School of Irish Acting, appearing at the Abbey Theater and the Peacock . > J / T 1!L : Theater. Neil, an acclaimed actor and radio and TV per former in Ireland, took us through a journey of some of Ireland’s most famous writers. His short extracts were per formed in a simple stylish pres entation emphasizing the humor of Oscar Wilde and Jonathan Swift delighting his audience. Our thanks to Kathy Masterson and the group of GAAA members who decorat ed the Buffalo Irish Center for the holidays. The building is very festive for the Christmas season. The holiday party sea son began with the Daughters of Erin Christmas and Installation Dinner. The AOH and LAOH honored members at their Christmas party held on December 8th. St. Pat’s Irish American Club will honor two long time members, Ruby McCafferty and Mary Greene. Our congratulations to these two wonderful, dedicated women, who are also members of the GAAA. The South Buffalo Christian Academy held their Christmas Pageant in the Claddagh Room. Over 130 parents and friends were in attendance for the per formance. Many GAAA mem bers and our friends chose the Buffalo Irish Center to host family parties. We thank the organizations, clubs, members and friends for using our facili ties for their holiday celebra tions. Membership dues will be due with the new year and are to be paid by March 31, 2002. Your dues include a subscrip tion to the Buffalo lkish Times. your Newsletter, reduced rental of the halls, discount tickets for some events, discounted mer chandise and our News Year Day Open House. It also includes voting rights if paid before March 31 of each year. The Buffalo Irish Center will host a New Year’s Eve Party beginning with a Mass at 7:30 p.m. The party will fea ture an open bar, buffet, hats, noisemakers, champagne at midnight and music by The Leftovers. The price is $30.00 per person for GAAA members and $35.00 per person for non members. All are welcome! Get your reservations early as space is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 825- 6700. In keeping with tradition, the Center will host an Open House for GAAA members on January 1, 2002, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. It will include an open bar, snacks, and good company. We hope to see many of our members. This is a great way to start the New Year. Bingo is held every Thursday night. If you can give a few hours of your time to help, or just come and play, it would be appreciated. Our players tell us we have the best Bingo in the area.
