6 ORGANIZATIONS lRish r i c i o e s - o e c e c o & e R . 2001 -jANtiARy. 2002 THE CLUB REPORT Martin W ynne Branch Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Erieann W . a x D H S f f l U ® W O Q ( B a r ( B f f l [ b a ) [ x i i l s The Martin Wynne Chapter has had an enjoyable autumn. It is a pleasure to report two ceili events, one at the Irish Center and the other at the Brounshidle Post. Both very successful. The second was our first attempt at a Friday night and outside of South Buffalo. With the music o f the Inishowen Ceili Band, it was indeed a most enjojable event. Eight sets took to the floor and oth ers enjoyed the great music. October found the Chapter involved in a workshop and ceili at Buffalo State College. The workshops included class es in fiddle, whistle, bodhran, piano accordian and set dance and a ceili in the evening. Those in attendance found it as an opportunity learn more about their music or their dance steps. Comhaltas was proud to be a participant in an event sponsored by the Dept. o f Communications and Modern & Classical Languages as part of Arts & Humanities Month at Buffalo State. Plans are being made for another workshop event in early March 2002. Members of the Martin Wynne Chapter also found themselves partici pating in the Celtic New Year event at UB North Campus with the Irish language class at the University. The students read stories in Irish and enjoyed the jigs and reel played by Comhaltas musi cians. Students participated in 'a few Ceilis and sets which they found very enjoyable. The Chapter looks forward the this event next year. Annual elections were also held in October. Joe Brown, Chairman; Mark Warford, Vice Chairman; Diana Straube, Secretary; Tim Straube, Treasurer; Bill Raffel, Publicity. Congratulations to the officers. The new year brings on a new list of activities. The first event is a Ceili scheduled for January 26 2002, to be held at the Buffalo Irish Center with music provided by the Comhaltas musicians. We are looking forward to another evening of great music and dance. Look for anouncements and posters with the schedule. In early March, the Buffalo State College workshop for music and dance are in the planning stage. The Martin Wynne Chapter holds their meetings on the Third Sunday of the month at 5 PM at the Irish Center. New members at always welcome. An Irish Center sponsored Seisiun follows our meeting at 6 PM. Irish language classes are held on Wednesday evenings at the Center with Margaret McGrath. Set dance and ceili dance instructions are on Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM at the Irish Center. Set dance instruction are held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM. We brought our largest contingent ever to this year’s competition...62 dancers along with moms, dads, sisters, broth ers, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Everyone came away from this enormous event with the same opinion...what a terrif ic way to spend Thanksgiving! Many of our Woodgate fam ilies were new to the Oireachtas scene and were not fully pre pared for the huge numbers of competitiors from all over Eastern United States. By the second day, they were all veter ans of the Oireachtas phenome non, especially after the first night’s award ceremony. That evening saw the Woodgate teams up on the podium numer ous times for both team and solo dancing, including our two Under 9 eight hand teams who placed FIRST and TENTH in that competition against twenty other teams in that age group. The roar of the Woodgate sup porters was enormous as our youngest dancers stepped up to the podium to receive their first place perpetual trophy and plaque and the medals which were awarded to both teams. The roar became even more deafening as our teacher, Mrs. Paula Woodgate, A.D.R.G., T.C.R.G., stepped onstage to receive her plaque. It was evi dent that the students, pride in their teacher was equal to their own pride in their accomplish ment. Saturday's competition and award ceremony was equal ly exciting, as many of the dancers stepped onstage for solo awards that night, includ ing Mary Katherine Kulp, under 8 dancer, who placed 5th in her competition among more than 150 competitors. Mary Catherine’s place also qualified her to dance in the World Championships to be held at Easter in Glasgow, Scotland. Quite an accomplishment for a 7 year old girl! Our last day of competition ended the same way the week end began, with Woodgate par ents and friends shouting and applauding as the Woodgate dancers stepped onstage for additional team and solo awards. The results of one par ticular competition on Sunday was especially pleasing to this Buffalo native, that was the Under 11 Eight- hand competi- ton. After 31 teams from all over New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania competed, the final results had 3 Buffalo teams up on the podium. Congratulations to the Rochcz School, 1st place, Rince na Tiarna, 2nd place and the Woodgate School, 3rd place. It was wonderful to see three of our Buffalo schools up there on stage together! Although the prizes and awards were wonderful and well deserved, what was even more gratifying was witnessing the other part of this week end...seeing the tenth place team jumping with joy as their friends on the other team placed first, watching parents and older dancers work with children of all ages as they prepared to dance by giving encouragement and support, and just seeing kids and their parents together walking around Philadelphia, viewing the sights, attending the Dinner Dance, singing Irish songs in the hotel lobby and having FUN! That is what this sport is really all about.
